hum ... interpretation ... interpretation and interpretation ...
You assume a lot from a picture taken at 1/60 of second ....
Imagine another story :
Crowd stand up during 2 hours ... the old man is sit on his wheelchair ...
Crowd have a rest ... old man stand up because he see a relative ...
picture taken ...
it's different no ?
it's just another interpretation not a tentative to insult an old man.

true :)
But interpreting a picture is hard and pretty dangerous ....
For exemple when I've seen this pict for the first time I wondered why the West-Point Cadet were waving a Soviet Union flag :D

It's threads like this that make me ashamed to be American.
You people see a chance to rip into a patriot, and give it every thing you've got.
What the hell do you know about what this man did? Nothing. Nor do I.
But have we've become so cynical, that any opportunity to spit on what is obviously meant to be a patriotic image is seized upon with great zeal.
Maybe this guy had polio. Maybe he never fought in any war. It's not the man in the picture. It's the Men he represents in the photo.
He represents people you probably passed on the street, not even greeting them. You walk with your head down, and pass right by.
How many of you have sat down and talked to a WWII veteran. I have. I see them every week. Men like Preston Kodek, who flew an F6F in the Pacific, and watched 3 of his best friends die in combat. Men like Robert Bauman, a B-17 pilot, shot down over Belgium on his 5th mission, only to spend the next 2 years as a prisoner of War. 6 of his crew killed.
These and many more are the men this fellow represents.
Without men like him, you would not even have a message board to bash him.
So next time you see a veteran, why don't you put your liberal agenda in check for a minute, and say "Thank you."
They fu*ckin' deserve at least that.

@muckmaw I hope it was not adressed to me as if you notice as soon as I posted I edited my message to add the following.
In my post I just wanted to show how an interpretation can be abusive you just need 1/60 second to take a picture.

I care not what anyone else thinks. I care not what anyone else's interpritation is. What I see is a picture of a soldier...a soldier who fought and sacrificed for his country. I see a soldier who has the guts to stand and salute the flag he fought for while everyone else sits and gawks at the purty colors and the sharp lookin' uniforms.
In this day and age...there are very few people who give a damn about their flag or the veterans that fought for them. In my mind...I don't care if you have served, are serving, how long you served, or if you were in combat...any soldier deserves a salute, for he's fighting for our freedom. The freedom we cherish...the freedom we've come to enjoy...was fought for by men like him. The next time you see a veteran, give him a salute and a thanks.
I never understood why some of the American public looks down on veterans. I cannot imagine why. I extend my thanks to any veterans who read this board...because people like you made this country the place it is today. A place where freedom is the name of the game. People like Hangtime and all the rest of the veterans. Thank you...
*steps off the soapbox with his head covered...*

We demand more!

Jeeezuz man, snap out of it. Maybe the guy was standing for patriotism, or maybe he was standing because he toejam his pants and couldn't stand sitting in it any more. What's the difference? Moralizing a picture doesn't make you more or less patriotic, and certainly doesn't make you more or less American.

GShlotz, that's the Marine Corps flag...

(loved how you put three points as an emphasis for emotional pause)
LOL you dont even know who the guy is, if he is a soldier, or even if he is american. You dont even know if he is just stretching. You dont even know if the hymn is playing.
I was in a military academy and I can tell you the crowd doesnt have to stand all thru a parade which can last for hours of flags and flags going by.
some people love playing with the emotions of the gullible. Thats all that site is.
Now go feel like a better person.
-
Just a cultural question : in the USA when there is a military manifestation is there an order for the troops ?
West-Point first next Marines etc ...
For exemple in France for the 14th of july the manifestation will allways end with the "Légion étrangère".
-
Now wait just a minute.
I really do not care what the picture emphesizes or not...I'm relating what I feel when I saw it.
So diddlyin what if I don't know that guy...so what if my interpritation is wrong...I don't care...
But to each his own...

This is what the picture represents to me. Why he was standing is anyones guess but we all know what the picture symbolizes.
Make all the little Toilet jokes you want.
Like Texace, I will continue to salute and thank every veteran I meet.

So the picture symbolizes to you the anger that you believe there are some who are more patriotic than others?

So animal our island mexicans dont like patriotism? :)

Well, good for you Muckmaw, there's nothing wrong with that. There's also nothing wrong with someone not getting all teary-eyed when they see that picture. There's also no link between respecting veterans and seeing a message of patriotism in that picture.

Patriotism is fine, whats wrong is pretentious people who feel they somehow are more patriotic and worthy of reverence.
Maybe I'm being a party pooper and spoiling it for the people who enjoy the group masturbation they like to disguise as patriotism.

The picture sums up the late 70's quite well.
Dunno what's up with the old man in the wheel chair. Guess we could sumise there all day. I do know there's an entire group of people sitting to his left. So far, the only excuse I've heard for it is "they were too tired to stand". I'm going to go out on a limb and say Straffo has no idea what being too tired to stand really means.

I wonder how differently this picture would be viewed without the text pointing out the dude is standing and being from a different url that didn't include AmerciaForever.. Then again, the website is "talltexan.com"..
Looks to me like he's trying to drain some into his colostomy bag...

In two years this is the fifth lap of that picture through the Bulletin Board community. It's 30 years old, the arguements are tired, and all it does is take up space on the message boards.
Animal is right (for the first time ever)- all you do is have a mental circle jerk with muckmaw as the pivot man over and over again.
I'm getting tired of reruns.
-
Some of you are too easily manipulated. Everything hinting at patriatism is not worthy of our respect and any picture can be spinned.
What if the caption had read:
"Ex-Marine, now disenfranchised with his country, stands up to moon the colour guard."
Just like flying the little plastic flags, honoring this picture or not has nothing to do with patriotism.

Apparently your quite familiar with the method of Circle Jerks. Perhaps you can explain what a 'Pivot man' is, for those of us who have not participated in one.
Did you gain this knowledge from watching it on video, or do you have "hands on" experience?

Well, I turned in my SUV (2000 Tahoe Limited Edition...God I loved that rig...until my wife took it over...something about child safety....blah blah blah)
But I now have my brand spanking new Chevy Monte Carlo SS, with a big ole American Flag across the rear window. (One of those clingy jobs that you can see through.)
And my father in law makes flag poles so I got a 35 footer for free, standing in my front yard.
BTW, if you need a flag pole, I can get you a great deal.
Shoot me an e-mail at jpizzo127@yahoo.com
-
im sure you fly it rain or shine, disrespecting it and the people that died for it.
-
Actually I did, after 9/11, until a former Marine who lived across the street from me explained the proper method for flying the flag.
Now I do it the correct way.
It's displayed on all days that there is no danger the weather will damage it. It flies from sunrise to sunset on a stationary flag pole in the open. It is not flown at night, as I do not have a spotlight for it.
If your trying to piss me off, Frogman, your going to have to do better than that.

Wrong x 2: That is not a Soviet flag, and that is not a West Point Cadet. (Cadets uniforms are dark Grey) That is a Marine Corps Color Guard.

Men may argue forever on what wins their wars,
And welter in cons and pros,
And seek for their answer at history's doors,
But the man with the rifle knows.
He must stand on the ground on his own two feet,
And he's never in doubt when it's won,
If it's won he's there; if he's not, it's defeat.
That's his test, when the fighting is done.
When he carries the fight, it's not with a roar
Of armored wings spitting death.
He creeps and crawls on earthen floor,
Butt down and holding his breath.
Saving his strength for the last low rush;
Grenade throw and bayonet thrust;
and the whispered prayer, before he goes in,
Of a man who does what he must.
And when he's attacked, he can't zoom away,
When the shells fill the world with their sound,
He stays where he is, lossens his spade,
And digs his defense in the ground.
That ground isn't ours till he's there in the flesh.
Not a gadget or bomb but a man.
He's the answer to the theories which start afresh,
With each peace since war began.
So let the wild circle of argument range
On what wins, as war comes and goes,
Many new theories may hold the stage,
But the man with the rifle knows.

Picture didn't suprise me much seems to get more commonplace everyday. Went to a PTA thing here two days after 9/11. Couldn't believe it but 95% of the faculty didn't have a clue what to do when the National anthem played with the Band honor guard displaying the flags, until us vets had to show them as we were removing our ballcaps and placing it over our hearts standing at attention facing our flag. It's a shame, it truly is.

A little flag etiquette review:
Flag Rules and Regulations
...
Sec. 9. — Conduct during hoisting, lowering or passing of flag
During the ceremony of hoisting or lowering the flag or when the flag is passing in a parade or in review, all persons present except those in uniform should face the flag and stand at attention with the right hand over the heart. Those present in uniform should render the military salute. When not in uniform, men should remove their headdress with their right hand and hold it at the left shoulder, the hand being over the heart. Aliens should stand at attention. The salute to the flag in a moving column should be rendered at the moment the flag passes

The old man showed class and knowledge of etiquette and the law of the land, and did the right thing in spite of his infirmity. The people surrounding him showed ignorance or disregard for these virtues and failed to do the right thing, despite their apparent good health. I think that's the point of the picture - America is host to a generation of no-class parasites with no respect for good manners, tradition, or American values.

I'm going to a funreal this weekend for a Great man ... a Vietnam vet ..he threw his Bronze Star in a trash can along with lesser "hounors"(his son dug it out). A great man who took an extra tour in Vietnam to keep his newlywed brother in germany instead of Nam. He was a Patriot but no fool.
Things like that form my opinion, reguardless of all the BS
Yes I've talked to vets on both sides of WWII.
Saw a WWII vet handing out anti-war pamplets last fall or so he claimed by his hat.
But don't confuse patriotism with this war idea... and that confusion is used much more by the pro-war than anti-war. (all bs about picture interpreting aside .. I won't get into that)
I thank our Vet's, but I'm also ashamed when they are used for pro-war arguments.
Maybe that's what people are saying when you think they are anti-Vet?

yea, your goal is to get the other guy to die for his country.
My grandfather and all his brothers were in WW2 and if you give any of them a gun and stick them in front of the white house they would shoot the president. Using vets as an excuse for war is silly, they are just as divided as we are about it.
-
To the old Gentleman weather he be a Veteran or not. At least he knows how to respect our flag and what it stands for. IMO something seriously lacking today.
For good or bad it is our Country and everything you have today and all the freedoms you have are owed to people who faught and died in many hellholes around the World because they believed in what it stands for. (many foreign countries also owe their freedoms to it though they don't like to admitt it at times.)
Be thankful, you could live in Iran and be sentanced to death for drinking a brewskie or a glass of wine. Think about all you really have before you go into "squeak & Moan" mode.
to Texace also! I feel exactly the same.
