don't know what ship either of them are, but it brings back memories of the book HMS Ulyssys when the Hipper class cruiser made it's attack on the convoy.

Not uncommon for large capital ships to have the national symbol on the bow of the ship. This was for ID from the air during battles. The last four battleships in the US fleet had the flag painted on the foremost turret.
