Title: Amazing how little it takes to make a good day
Post by: Urchin on February 28, 2003, 02:46:47 PM
Met a gentleman who was a gunner on a B-17 in the war.  I only had a short chat with him, but he invited me over to check his stuff out.  He said he has logs of the flights, various booklets the USAAF gave out, other stuff.  I'm planning on going over there Monday or Tuesday (guy literally lives 5 minutes from me).  You guys have any questions or anything you want me to ask him?

How tall was the Ball Turret gunner?

What model of 17 did he fly?

Did he carry a good luck charm?

What was the name of his plane?

How often were other bombers hit by friendly defensive fire?

Of all the books I have read, only a few mention other bombers getting hit by friendly defensive fire or gunners holding fire to prevent such hits.

I always wondered if it was not a problem or a problem that was not talked (recorded) about.

What sort of handbook did the gov't give out regarding VD? :p

No, actually I think it would be interesting to hear about life on the base.  Did he ever wash his clothes in avgas?  What was his opinion of powdered eggs? And just what is chipped beef anyway?
