No foolin - I knew they were workin on sumthin in the Bear Trap.
Don't think I will make it this year, have been there five or six times during the 80's, but maybe next - it's on my agenda anyway :)

Last time I saw her fly they had six oxen dragging her down the tarmack to the flight line..
That weekend I got an Art Scholl autograph from him while we were both waiting in the "little blue colored box with a door, made out of fiberglass line"

Man, I drove out there twice from MA, went out by train two times (first class of course) and flew out once. Spent the whole week there all except the time my son and I flew out. That was only a weekend trip...
Was there the year Skip Holm was flyin the color tile mustang and will never forget Bob Hoover sayin "Skip, ya got oil all over that thing" Dreadnought won that year if i'm not mistaken..
The drive out is pretty cool too, once ya get beyond the Missouri River neway - trains are always great, but expensive. Figured that cost me about .40 per mile - but enjoyed every minute of it..
Yeah, I will be back there someday, count on it.

Jeeze, Dreadnought is a Sea Fury isn't it ??
Fuzzy memory, but I remember Dreadnought having an engine out that was kinda dicey the last time I went ( which is a while ago ) on a race start on Sunday. Heard an engine start missing when they were behind the grandstands and he put her down as she quit.

But you all have Oshgosh or how ever it's spelled correctly. I would LOVE to see that.

Yeah, Dreadnought is a Sea Fury with a 4360 in it, and a beautiful brute she is, the most impressive aircraft there.

For those that may not know, the "oldtimer" in the second post is Lyle Shelton’s Grumman F8F-2 Bearcat "Rare Bear" (N777L).
Mr. Shelton, RareBear, flies the friendly skies of Aces High with the Dickweed Heavy Bomber Group.

This is Dreadnought, a two place Sea Fury. A 4360 is a P&W 28 cylinder radial engine with 4 mags, 56 spark plugs.

The Sea Fury is a lighter, smaller version of the Tempest. It flew for the first time in Sept. of 1944. The production version, the Sea Fury Mk X, replaced Supermarine Spits starting in 1947. It was the last piston-engined fighter in RN service. In 1957 the Sea Fury was replaced by the Sea Hawk.
First flight- Sept. 1, 1944
Power- Bristol 2480hp Centarus 18 two-row sleeve-valve radial
Armament- 4 x 20mm plus provisions for up to 2000# bombs/rockets
Max speed- 460mph
Ceiling- 36k
Climb- 4320ft/min

I remember reading an article in one of the flight magazines quite awhile ago about doing a hot lap in Rare Bear. I don't know if Mr. Shelton wrote it or someone else actually took it around the race course.
It was fascinating. The stories he could tell.
