-
so as for the debate about cat's and dog's intelligence.......
seriously though. Hope the lil'un feels better soon!
-
glad the lil tyke is doin ok.
as fer how smart cats are..
"The dumbest cat is smarter than the smartest dog. You'll never get 8 cats to pull a sled through snow." -Mark Twain
-
yep I got my cat back a couple of days ago with about a 6 inch long cut in her tummy
spaying..
dunno why they had to cut her so much and make it so ragged :(
-
wtf kanth, id take yer cat to another vet to make sure everything is okay.
when my parents got their female fixed you couldnt see anything.
if they made a mistake gimme a ring and I'll help you.....nevermind i think you could inact enough destruction on your own.
seriously man, get her checked out.
-
mine's 8 years old and was in heat.
a friend of mine at work said they did the same thing to her dog, huge ragged cut...
I'll ask around more, seriously I don't see why it had to be so big a cut. She's healthy altho bald with a big line in her..
Also got my male cats tapeworm medicine from the same vet, that night (2 nites ago) we had to take him into emergency cause he couldn't walk and couldn't see.
I dunno...I don't trust anyone with them, I'm just glad it's over and they are still with me.

Kareful Kanth.. there are vet hacks out there.
Spaying normally leaves no more than a 1-2" scar.. a neatly shaved belly is normal.
A ragged hack in my cat would prompt a very sharp discussion with the surgeon.
good luck and scratch yer kitty behind the ears fer me.

a female cat's "junk" can be measured two inches from her stern.
any vet, or person, that hurts a cat beyond a slap on the bumb for fediddlein up really hard, deserves my eternal hate.
What happened to your cat is unbelievable. A six inch cut? Damn that is up near from stem to head.
Seriously man if you think they went to far email me at

here's a pic of a properly spayed cat.

My sister took a cat to a vet once to get it spayed. The cat was a stray that my brother in law had confiscated from some kids in the movie theater that he managed. The kids had found the cat out back and it was a very young stray kitten but they snuck it in and were causing a disturbance with it. So he took it from them when he discovered it was a stray and brought it home to my sister. After having it for a while they decided to take it to the vet.
After putting the cat to sleep and shaving its belly and making the incision, the vet goes, " what the fek? This is a male cat." Sewed him up and said bring him back in 3 weeks and we can neuter him for you. Then they tried to charge my sister for the botched operation.
Of course, my sister assumed it was a female and told the doc that, but I guess the doc never really checked before he pulled out the scalpel.

here's what mine's looks like, looks shorter than I thought (I maybe over protective) but looks longer than what that cat has by about twice.
-
kanth you cant be overprotective with a cat.
i live with two cats and they hate this kind of toejam.
That wound, yes wound is infected.
Get that cat to a real vet post haste
-
are you saying that because of all of the reddish pinkish hues in the picture?

here's my question if anyone knows, she was in heat when I had her fixed, she had been in heat for a little over a week.
once she's fixed it doesn't seem to stop her being in heat..
so my question is, is it normal for whatever hormones are in her system from heat to last a while after she has had her ovarian hysterectomy (spay) ?

You shouldn't make such, heheee, blanket statements:D
-
kanth i say it is infected because of the size of the thing.
De-wombing a cat shouldnt leave a hole that big.
But anywhooo whats done is done, just swab it down with vinegar and water... use iodine if you want to lose you eyes,

My wife works for a vet, I had her read this thread. Her thoughts:
Normal incision is about 3/4" for her vet. 2 sutures.
On occasion, a small piece of ovarian tissue may be left within the cat. It is also possible to find 3rd ovaries in cats. When this happens the heat cycle is uninterrupted and further surgery is necessary (we have owned such a cat).
It is also possible for cats to be hermaphrodite. She has seen 2. They usually have a noodle and ovaries, sometimes a testicle. When this happens a simple spay turns into abdominal surgery, necessitating a slightly larger incision.
Sling, male cats can be cryptorchid, where one or both testes have not descended from the abdominal cavity (this is also abdominal surgery, larger incision). Even so, they have never made such a mistake at the clinic.
If the surgery is performed in a surgically sterile enviroment there should be no need to "treat" the incision with anything at home. They swab the incision off with 1% peroxide after surgery just to get the blood off.
5 cats, 4 dogs, birds, rodents, etc etc all in my house. We get a lot of... rescues from the clinic. Last thing she brought home was a Great Dane puppy. Brought home a 4 foot iguana in a cat carrier once. Tried to bring home a pot-bellied pig. The boys and I were in the back yard digging a BBQ pit for it. She took the subtle hint.
General rule is anything over a couple hundred pounds has to live in the barn with the horses...
... it's not so bad, I have had worse room mates.

It takes about 48 hours for the hormones to get out of her system. In general, she shouldn't show signs of heat beyond that.
Regarding the length of the incision, older cats, cats that have had kittens, and cats in heat have a relatively larger uterus. Also the incision length depends on the surgeon. The incision heals side-to-side, not end-to-end, so I wouldn't get worked up about the length.
From the photo, it looks like there is some swelling of the incision. This is usually due to a suture reaction, as the internal stitches are being absorbed. If you notice any discharge or redness, or she acts like she feels bad (stops eating, etc.) you should get her checked.

Dogs won't willingly insert themselves into a glass jar.

Thanks for all of the info. She's eating and talking (ALOT!) and generally being in heat so I'm looking fwd to that stopping. If it does not I will realize that something may have been missed.
Her gash was weeping on the first day but had stopped by the second. She's very active (still luring the boys around) and still begs to have her tummy, chest, chin rubbed so it would seem that she's feeling pretty normal.
I will keep my eye on her tho in case she starts acting funny.
I appreciate all the help and information, the last cat I brought in to have spayed died....and so it took me 8 years to get up the courage to take this one in and I'm very nervous about her health.
