Weekly Standard: Saddam's French Connection (http://www.weeklystandard.com/Content/Public/Articles/000/000/002/313ycqje.asp)

another old article

A Beautiful Friendship: What France sees in Iraq (http://www.weeklystandard.com/Content/Public/Articles/000/000/001/791frwyo.asp)

From a right wing rag but good enough to stir the pot.

Excerpt:

"As for financiers, industrialists and above all those responsible for military industry, the question must be put to French politicians: Who did not benefit from these business contracts and relationships with Iraq? . . . With respect to the politicians, one need only refer back to the declarations of all the political parties of France, Right and Left. All were happy to brag about their friendship with Iraq and to refer to common interests. From Mr. Chirac [now the center-right president] to Mr. Chevenement [the socialist former defense minister] . . . politicians and economic leaders were in open competition to spend time with us and flatter us. We have now grasped the reality of the situation [of France's support for the 1991 Gulf War, a betrayal in Saddam's eyes]. If the trickery continues, we will be forced to unmask them, all of them, before the French public. "

Explains alot.

I love the picture of Chirac and Saddam standing together in the article, looks like they are in a nuclear reactor building.

Look how Saddam is gazing at Chirac like he is his best buddy.;)

Can anyone verify this?

Read an article back in  Feb. 03 that in 1998 a team of French doctors flew to Iraq and diagnosised Saddam with cancer. They then flew in some type of machine to cure this cancer which required cobalt, an item banned in Iraq by the U.N. embargos. Anyway, it said that the French somehow (didn't go into detail) got the Cobalt into Iraq, and did cure his cancer.

True? Just another French-bashing article?

Quote
The 1984 public U.S. condemnation of chemical weapons use in the Iran-Iraq war, which said, referring to the Ayatollah Khomeini's refusal to agree to end hostilities until Saddam Hussein was ejected from power, "The United States finds the present Iranian regime's intransigent refusal to deviate from its avowed objective of eliminating the legitimate government of neighboring Iraq to be inconsistent with the accepted norms of behavior among nations and the moral and religious basis which it claims."

Well I guess if you stand by while your underlings invade and capture the US embassy in your country and then do nothing to end the crisis, you can expect the US to put anyone else in the region above you in terms of support. Especially when you allow the "students" to preach anti US rhetoric each day.

The US will oppose anything that you do, until the day you die.

And rightly so I would say.

As long as Saddam kept attacking Iran I am sure the US would never have even thought of messing in his affairs.

I figure the only reason Iran got away with what they did to the US (ie the only reason the US did not strike back militarily) is because the weakest US president ever (Jimmy Carter) was in power. Of course his action probably indirectly lead the Sept 11th as it showed the Muslim world that you can humiliate the US and get away with it.

Getting back on topic,  when Saddam invaded Kuwait, probably the best friend the US had in the region everything changed.

Moral of the story?
