Had you been young and kicking during WW2, would you have volunteered for the Air Corps, knowing all that you know now-that is, that you have a fairly large chance of buying the farm?
-
Absolutely.
-
I would try and get in a P-38 outfit, lol.
-
Really? Knowing full well you'd most likely end up in the 8th Air Force as a bomber pilot or crew?
I know I would.

Cool leather jacket vs mud-caked twill vs oil-soaked khaki....maybe the khaki but certainly the leather jacket.
-
Like most poeple here, I guess :)
Yep.
-
yes.
no question.
-
nope.
-
In a heartbeat
-
I'd like to think I would, cept I'd join the navy. :)
-
squadron 341/340 or NN without a doubt.
-
Of course we all would. Everyone wanted to do their part in crushing tyrany. No one knew the horror of war, just the glamour.
-
I would. Chances are if you lived in that era you'd be drafted anyway. But I'd make my damnedest to make sure I end up in England. The US Air Corps guys had lots of fun with English girls(easy to get with a pair of silk stockings), while the Brits were eating sand and screwing camels in North Africa.

sunking, the idea was, would you still volunteer knowing what you know now.

Hah, hah, hah... Oh! Were you serious?

No way. Infantry for me thanks.

I would want to be a Sherman tank commander :) Given my fair but not perfect eyesight I would probably have washed out of flight school by default just like I did during my pre-WOFT physical in the Army. I passed the funky written test though.
After WW2 avaition, I have always found the Silent Service to be appealing with heroes like Mush Morton and Dick O'Kane. "Hit 'em again and hit 'em Harder" for the late Sam Dealey. If only those Mark 14 exploders were up to snuff.

Hell yeah :)
Although I'd probably want to fly my P40 straight through to the end... or maybe jump ship and go fly 109s :)
As soon as they build the first Holodeck (star trek), I'll be first on the list for a WWII simulation. I'll live in my holodeck.. forever and ever :D
-
to war? NEVER ...
-
yeah, I'd open the mouth about bombing the RAF, Enigma code, Ladoga lake, Normandy...you know, all the mean stuff ;)
-
No, I would've gone to the Soviet Union to volunteer, and very likely died in a rifle division ;)
-
N. Alantic Merchant Marine here
-
I don't have the eyesight for it.
I think with my background in hard science I would have been used elsewhere - encryption or R&D would have been interesting.
-
I would. Then again I would probably end up wiping windscreens, changing engines and gasing them up.... sorta like real life ;)
-
Youre all ignoring the big question on everyones mind...
Would you shoot chutes? ;)
-
"Would you shoot chutes?"
Well....maybe.....if they exploded...
-
best job: test pilot. U don't get shot at, and you get to fly both your country's planes and the enemy's
-
Hell yes!!
I'd have to be in the 56th :D Just fly my lovely Jug..
My other choice would be a test pilot
-
Many in my family went, so I'd have gone with them.
-
No question, I'd go in a heartbeat.
