Title: suggestion: Realistic bail-out conditions?
Post by: Kweassa on March 06, 2003, 06:15:23 PM
I know this has been brought up before, but considering the nature of AH2:ToD we've been told so far, I think it would be interesting if realistic bail-out conditions are implemented.. (maybe as an arena option)?

I recall hearing that in real life footages, a lot of planes are considered 'destroyed' even if they did not receive fatal structural damage, because their pilots would almost certainly attempt to bail-out and live, instead of push their luck to the limit where they may really be fatally damaged and fall under a situation where bail-out is impossible(fatal dives.. spins with one wing knocked out.. pilot death... etc etc).

Since the incentive for 'living' would seem become a lot more higher than current AH, it would be really interesting to see how pilots manage their damage situations if realistic bail-out conditions are implemented..

 ............

ps) I hope the planes don't automatically transform into 'CHUTE' as is now.. seeing the enemy plane go down, is perhaps the single most thrilling moment in flight combat simulations..

ps2) while we're at it :) it'd also be cool to see crashing over water throwing up a huge splash.. instead of the explosion we have.. it's kind of silly seeing a plane 'explode' when it crashes into water.. :)

I agree completely.

Well, realistic bail-out conditions would also include not being able to bail out at high speed or G-forces.

A word of warning though - it can be sooooo frustrating loosing your pilot just because he cannot overcome the G-forces in a downwards spiraling plane. IL2 has it - and I almost throw my screen from desktop at times... :)

Sounds good to me.

I agree that the water splash, the burning/diving dead aircraft and the realistic bailout would be good. In WarBirds II the icon of a "dead" aircraft would go white but the airplane would go into a dive, smoking and burning until it dug a hole. That was truely cool. In IL2 you have to be slow and level or you just don't get out. Makes it a lot more tricky about getting out, and a lot of the time you just get out rather than trust a badly damaged aircraft not to kill you.

It would be nice, but with the amount of chute shooters here whats the use. :(

I agree also.  I really liked the bailouts in CFS2, in which if you are spinning wildly it would not allow you to bail.  Not only that, but sometimes your parachute would fail or get tangled, etc. Maybe AHII could make the bailouts like CFS2.  I also agree with both the water and "warping" thing...it is pretty strange how a flaming b17 suddenly turns into a little guy falling through the sky. It is pretty cheesy the way you crash into the water, and I have also noticed that it is possible to land in the water, so maybe AHII will change all of these unrealistic elements of the game.

I recall that Aces of the Pacific and Aces over Europe wouldn't let you bail if the G's were too high.  I would pound away at the keys for bailing out desperately, hoping to bail out in time.  Also, in EAW, you could bail out...but there was a chance that you'd hit a part of your plane in doing so and be knocked out and you would fall and fall and fall and your chute wouldn't open and then the graphics would cut to an exterior of the sprite of your body splattering into the ground.  When you bail out in Battle of Britain, there is a chance your chute won't open and when that happens, you see you 3D figure flailing around helplessly and you can hear him scream.

wouldn't that be a ditch?

There's also Janes WW2 Fighters with the annoying jammed canopy, or European Air War, with the pilot who spins down, free of the plane, but unable to open the chute.

Hope AH2 has things like that, I think its realistic.  If things like these get added, less pilots would bail out and they would have to ditch more.
