Title: Identify this event
Post by: -ammo- on March 08, 2003, 01:36:38 AM
This High order detonation was one of the absolute largest in the history of the continental U.S.  It has been specualated that it was the second largest explosion only behind the 194'ish shipboard detonation that happened in California.  I wish I could give you some scale to the photo. Those structures are over a 150' long, 25' high, and 30' wide at the door.  It shouldn't be hard to figure out what the structures are or what the facility is used for.

Andi, you are close. However you have the location wrong (even though I think you might be talking about the same event.

Here is an igloo that is approximately half the size of the ones pictured above.

It was actually in San Antonio in Nov 1961.  The blast was so powerfull it sent the 5 ton steel door 6 miles to loop 1604.  In my old career field, this incident is a big safety poster and a reality check:)

You would love the dumps here in Northern Nevada. I remember sitting on 16" liners for BB's outside the offices of one. Hawthorne, the big one near Walker Lake, south of Reno. And there is Herlong (sp), stuff for Fallon NAS...

Title: Texas City explosion
Post by: DiabloTX on March 09, 2003, 11:45:59 PM
Actually, the explosion in Texas City in 1947 was ammonium nitrate and not ammunition.  Pieces of the ship from the first explosion were found over ten miles away.  Fire departments from Houston had to be called in (Texas City is about 30 - 35 miles south of Houston).

Actually, there were two events. The one in the photo in the original post was of Medina AFB at the time of the explosion.  It was taken by a private pilot that happened to have his camera.  Can you imagine how that shockwave must have shook that airplane?

mc202,
I live about 25 miles from Herlong, grew up watching them shoot off their 10k lbs demo pits, rattled the windows of my parents about 20 miles away.  Remember in the late 70's when that daisy cutter went off in its igloo?  Broke a few windows around the valley.

BTW used to work for REMSA in '99' as a paramedic.

That and the boxes that fell off a truck that were turned in by locals, C-5's said to be landing at night during one of the mid-east brew-ups, rumors of ...non-standard ways to "render inert"...
The fun of governmental disposal of old toys.
Then there was the post WWII explosives salvage plant in Sparks, they would dig the explosives out of naval mines to re-use. Some kids brought a five pound lump (RDX?) home from where the plant used to be...
