Knew the first second I saw it "Burma Road".  Good ole Flying Tigers destroyed a large portion of the Japanese Army on that twisting trail.

I imagine the winding back and forth was to minimize the effective slope faced by vehicles, (or to create more employment :))

It was built to move supplies.  I would say that it would take a long timt to be supplies which is why they flew "The Hump".
