Title: Finally...Proof of France's involvment with Iraqi army

Meanwhile, U.S. officials told CNN that surrender negotiations have secretly begun with key Iraqi military officials.

One senior official said that some parts of the Iraqi military already may have agreed not to fight.

Yay! Another national character assasination! It's a good job you're not from a nation that bent over and took it in the bellybutton from the Nazis, selling them excellent grade steel to build machines to kill allied soldiers, in order to preserve a much vaunted neutrality, so that years later the inhabitants of that very same country could feel a smug sense of superiority over another nation by lecturing them about collaboration and surrender.

That would be awful, wouldn't it?

I'm perfectly chilled out, believe you me.

Hortlund - answer me this. You're clearly a clever guy and very intelligent - why do you have to resort to this nonsensical national character assasination? Because its easy? I certainly found it very easy, in that last post.

Every nation has skeletons in its closet, that's how history works, surely you realise that?

A joke is a joke is a joke. But it's more than that to some of the posters around here, and you've become one of them.

The French are just people, no more idiosyncratic in their ways than the English, Germans, Americans or Swedes. So let's drop the roadkill once and for all. It's boring, repetitative and stupid.

Sorry Dewdling, but national character assassination is a healthy form of venting. Proceed.

Dowding,

I used to find the whole French bashing stuff mildly offensive, but it got so ridiculous now that the joke is on them!

C'mon Hortlund, you can do better than a mere, rehashed surrender joke!

Bash away, you'll look more intelligent with every racist slur...

Go ahead, make my day!

"french" is not a race.

when attempting to demigrade others intelligence, its best not to say stupid things.

...and its not funny to you because you are french.

Oh yeah. Solid reporting there. The thread could only get more surreal if gullible old Hortlund's day job was being a judge or something... ;)

Dowding old chap, I take issue with some points of your post.

Is there is yet any real evidence of cleverness or intelligence in this virtual 'stampede' to stamp on the French with remarkable vigour?

Ok maybe only one point. All the rest is spot on.

Three of my ancestors died at Agincourt, one (Lord Jean de Croy) leading a sworn band of 18 knights right into the middle of the English Army in an attempt to kill or capture Henry the Fifth.  (They were wiped out to the man, but may have killed Henry's second in commnd).   De Croy's son-in-law, Jean De Lannoy (ancestor of Franklin Delano Roosevelt) in all likelihood died with him in that charge.  Surely no one can dispute the courage of these men.

We must not allow teasing to degenerate into the denigration of an entire people and their history, when our real problem is with the current government playing Vichy to Saddam's Hitler.  As Dowding says, every nation has skeletons in their closet; as members of the community of free peoples we have the power and the duty to focus on the issues at hand, give guidance to our "leaders' [who are employees, when all is said and done], and avoid false generalizations, old and irrelevant resentments, group think and other distractions, whether directed at Frenchmen, Muslims, Germans or even Americans.  May God give us wisdom to deal with these interesting times, and our leaders as well.
