How long until this happens?
We are on track to hit $2.50 this week.
-
$1.84 here now :(
-
heard on the news over a week ago of a Cali. station at over $3. probably the lone station in the desert, 150 mi from anywhere.

That's good coz the average US citizen uses ignorantly 4X more energy than the european citizen.
-
That stat is not true Bug. It's more like 1.5X or 2.0X.
The difference is mostly because of our increased productivity.
If you look at energy consumption per unit of GDP then the US is actually more efficient than the rest of the world.

Funked? what kinda gas are you buying?
Edit: Not a trick question.
-
I hope it raises higher in the US.. oh? you just bought a Lincoln Navigator? or an Escalade? and its costs about a hundred bucks for a fillup? Bwahaahaa!.. that means its time to get rid of it.. as well as that 1972 Chevy Nova and that Olds Delta 88.. I'm so sick of this sense of entitlement that we have to drive gas guzzlers and POS smoking hulks.

Then the average US citizen has some more work to do. I use at least 8x more, and I'm well aware! :D

I just saw on CBS news a gas station that had premium at $4.29.
Regular was well over $3.00.

You lucky, lucky bastards.

SOB, nice usage of the 'pigeon hole' mentality.
your reaction is exactly the sense of entitlement I was talking about.. no thought.. no critical thinking..just emotional reaction. Were you raised by a single mother, perhaps?

I see... well, since you expect everyone to drive Geo Metros and similar cars, why don't you come over here and show me how to fit myself, the wife, the 6yr daughter, the 2.5yr old twin boys (and thier car seats) in the damn thing.
Hell we've got a Cavalier now and it's really not big enough =\

Hawk, you're being an idiot. If you want a sensible argument, make a sensible statement. You babbled like an idiot, and I responded in kind.

Be careful what you praise. The effects of our tanked economy along with a fuel shortage affects not only our economy but our international trade and imports as well.
-
ya SOB, you could be right..
ok.. I'll try and refine it a bit.
I think people are so unwilling to change or think of anything different than 'what is right now'. Caveman has a dilemma with a whole army to drive around, but as it is right now he really doesn't have a choice. I see that. I'm saying that we need to MAKE the choices, humans are pretty bright creatures. for whatever reason, many if not most folks are unwilling to see what damage their gas guzzlers are doing. nearly forever, we in the US have had dirt cheap gas. remember going on Sunday drives when we were little? .25 a gallon gas and the family Buick. those days are over but we still hang on to them , perhaps for a sense of comfort, who knows. I think that the price of fuel skyrocketing is a way to snap people out of that and with it, the cars we drive that are ineffecient. if it takes 4 bucks a gallon to help wean us from the Saudi teat, then thats ok with me. I would hope that that would lead to big cars and vans that Caveman could ferry his troop around without sucking down the juice.

hawk... or can I call you PH (pidgeon hole) for short? My '69 elky does not "smoke" unless you count the occassional set of rear tires.

lol, you can get those prices in Needles California almost any time :) Always fill up in Barstow man...

A third of the gas prices are taxes. If Gray-out Davis really wanted to help he would drop the taxes for a period of time.
Secondly the environmental wackos have forced the gas companies to refine over 100 blends of fuel, at four different grades. The blends can't be shipped out side of the regions it was blended for. i.e. Northeast gas can't be shipped to southwest when there is a shortage.
And speaking of shortages, the mutiblend theory prevents a refinery from switching from one blend to another quickly, they have to flush the lines and clean the refinery before mixing another blend. This is way you have prolonged shortages, But it dose allow for the politicians to get face time.
And finally why aren’t the Environmental wackos jumping up in down for joy over this. This is what the always wanted?

or drive the 5 miles over the river to Az. and pay 50 cents less.

Laz, what kind of gas mileage does your elCamino get? in the 30s? I'll bet that even in perfect tune, clean filters, and perfect tires its a struggle to get 18mpg maybe, 20. Thats a complete waste of 2 dollar a gallon gas. yes, its a groovin car, yes, it can burn up a 1/4 mile in 5 seconds. but what I was saying is that times have certainly changed. the 70's are way over. If we are ever going to kick the addiction of Mid-East oil, we need to change our mindset on getting around. dinosaurs like 70's and 80's cars are part of the problem, regardless of how attached you are to them, and how cool they are. don't get me wrong, I love American cars. I had a rockin 82 Trans Am turbo, but I could stomp on it and watch the gas guage go down.
bottom line for me, is that I'd love to see America tell the Mid East to Screw off with their oil cause we have alternative means of getting around. Fuel Cell, Hybrids and the like. it would take a quantum leap of mindset to get us out of our guzzlers, but if any country can do it, the US can.

Supreme at the Chevron down the street is $2.04/Gallon. Its one of the cheaper prices I've seen in town.

hawk... quite a change from "gas guzzlers and POS hulks" eh?
My car get's about 10 mpg average.. so far as energy... I probly do more for energy savings than most... I am in charge of a facility that has record low energy usage... worrying about a few hot rods is silliness. If there is a problem it won't be solved by a few hot rodders becomeing a little more fuel concious.
We won't fix anything till there is a crisis. or one is apparent. I am bringing us a little closer to a solution every time I open up the secondaries and chirp the tires on the freeway.
Still... it is very PC of you to chastise people who are behaving legally. Thank you for your input... now, please get out of the way.

quite a change from "gas guzzlers and POS hulks" eh?
what does that mean?, what's the difference?
We won't fix anything till there is a crisis.
you don't think there is a crisis now? how bad does it have to get for you to change your mindset?
it is very PC of you to chastise people who are behaving legally
it has nothing to do with behaving legally, smoking is legal, eating fast food all day long is legal, putting a loaded gun to your head and teasing the trigger is legal , slavery was legal and beating your wife for talking toejam is STILL legal in parts of the world. it doesn't make it right. and if you would stop being such a brick you would admit it too.
I know that if there were sweeping laws that took your muscle car away you would freak and take to the street in protest as it would not just be a property issue, but an affront to how you express your self. you need a big loud squeely car probably with Iron Maiden blasting away to show the world how bad-assed you are. and thats fine. we all have crutches.
-
wow hawk, good thing i read all of your posts or my reply wouldnt have been ultra-ignorant.
I guess people like lazs and I just have different interests than you.
As a person who has a keen interest in what you call gas gullers and POS hulks, I have to disagree with you. Owning a muscle or classic car, in a way, defines who you are (to an extent.) I have made more friends than I can count based on a common interest in restoring and maintain cars. Call it a "subculture" if you will.
Growing up i spent countless hours at a friend's house working on our cars, tossing back some brews and shooting the toejam. If it wasnt for our shared interest in cars i guarantee we wouldnt be friends. We all went to different schools, lived in different parts of town etc.... Hell i even remember giving a speech in high school about smog laws trying to kill my "hobby." Guys in class that i REALLY didnt get along with suddenly became close friends because of the shared interest.
And as far as your point about if laws were changed that folks like me would take to the street? Damned rights. I would be at the front of the line.
Think of it this way. You play a game based on things that happened 50 plus years ago. Why? A feeling of nostalgia for machinery of days gone by. The same goes for cars. While i recognize that AH doesnt contribute to any effect on the environment, a similiar sub-culture exists so you may understand where i'm coming from. A group of people interested in what is now defunct technology, but a technology that still has a certain appeal to the very few.
just my 2 cents.
-
loser:
man, I know that subculture. I was neck deep in that group. I've got the scars on my knuckles where the manifold bit me over and over again. I dig American muscle cars and drag racing, speed, tourque and getting your hands dirty fixing and tuning. its a great hobby and I'll teach my sons to love a good car too.
I guess my caustic spewing is that just perhaps that kind of excessive consumption has to come to an end, or at least a major modification in our modern times. The old days are pretty much gone and while one car is not responsible for much damage, tens of thousands of guzzlers are.
I know its a threat to even speak of having everyone drive sensible cars (and yes I'm poking laz with a stick when I talk of him in his elky), but ok, imagine the price of gas lowering to .50 a gallon. Imagine the cars and SUVs that would come out, then imagine how much of a squeak the US would be to the Middle East and OPEC.
I've nothing against the cars, but everything against how dependent it makes us.
-
you whiners we pay 5,71 $ per gallon here :(
That is why i cycle 12km everyday to and from campus.
-
I pay 0'97 € a liter  ....but it's 98 octane :D
-
Air_Guard your heart will thank you in the long run for having to bike around.
Americans have always been about independence and freedom to do whatever. that includes our love affair with cars. Cars mean freedom to go wherever in this big country whenever we want. The call for a 'road trip' invokes many emotions in Americans. Another American trait is 'bigger/better/faster' which we have in spades..our cars reflect this. I think the problem is that currently the alternative to 'bigger/better/faster' is 'electric/putt-putt/tiny and I have to admit, that just ain't American. I'm hoping that the powers that be can fuse 'big' with 'effecient'
-
hawk... you never knew anything about muscle cars or car culture... I will bet the farm on it... it was a passing interest for you.
loser is correct. I get more out of a few dollars extra at the pumps than most.. I have made friends and had more recreation than most out of it... How much fuel does it take for someone to skii down a mountain? how bout travel to wherever? take a cruise ship to meet people?
as for slavery... sorry... it's illegal ... and eating? none of your friggin bussiness. I bet I am in as good a shape as you are... I bet I am in better shape than you will be at my age.. so... does that mean I have the right to tell you how to live, eat and exercise? Mind your own freekin bussiness.
so what if all the dino juice goes away? bet we come up with something then huh?
The prices we see today are not because the resource has gotten proportionately rarer. Get it? Hell... bet I use less fuel per year than yu do.

and what about them skydivers and recreational pilots? We would need a whole new government agency to find out what fun is socialy acceptable... I'm sure that appeals to your ilk tho.

you are making my point for me
you never knew anything about muscle cars or car culture...
you should go far with your advanced degree in psychoanalysis, I'm sure your patients are in good hands.
it was a passing interest for you.
I was pretty into it, but yes, it passed, once I grew up.
so what if all the dino juice goes away? bet we come up with something then huh?
again, you are making my point for me. this attitude is what is wrong with America, not what is RIGHT.
I know it frightens you to think that you would have to someday give up your guzzler car. how would you define yourself? by your personality?
-
Reminds me of the energy crisis of the mid-70's when OPEC put the squeeze on production and drove up prices.

I was thinking about this the other day. What if we ran out of petroleum fuels? The way I see it, we'd lose the automobile and use bikes like the Chinese, or go way back to our Western roots and ride horses. Electricity wouldn't be a problem - nukes, baby. But we wouldn't have airplanes. Ships would go back to sails or nukes. Trains would go back to coal or wood. The trucking industry would collapse and the railroads would grow.
Maybe there would be a war as the oil wound down and countries fought for access to the resources like animals at a lake during an African drought.
There was an Italian comedy back in the '70s that posed the possibility that oil would run out. The solution? Italian scientists determined that human beings release a lot of energy during love-making, so they devised a machine that would capture that energy. I think the film was called "The Sex Machine" in the US. I don't know the Italian title. Anyway, consider that your weekend video rental assignment. :p

gofaster that will never happen. There is enough fossil fuels in sand deposits and under the oceans to fuel the world for hundreds and hundreds of years. It is just a question of how much we are willing to pay to extract said fuel.
The "world supply" ( i hate this term) of fuel is more dictated by politics than by technical issues.
