Title: Bill proposed to allow return of U.S. vets buried in France
Post by: Hortlund on March 14, 2003, 08:10:30 AM
"I, along with many other Americans, do not feel that the French government appreciates the sacrifices men and women in uniform have made to defend the freedom that the French enjoy today," Rep. Ginny Brown-Waite said in introducing legislation providing financial help for the reburial of veterans from the two world wars.

A rather weird idea. It does give some indication on how popular France is right now in the US though.

Some people are renaming French fries as Freedom fries.  This is all just trivializing some serious issues.  These politicians are looking for any boost from short-term emotions.

Political demagoguery at its worst.  It's one thing to take potshots at France by changing French Fries into Freedom Fries.  It's another thing entirely to use our war dead for political brownie points.  What's next, digging up French soldiers who died in the Revolutionary War and shipping their remains back to France?

According to the article, even the American Legion seems to think this legislation is fairly wacky.

France is doing what the U.S. would do if the roles were reversed, protecting its National best interests.

it's one thing to think it another totally ridiculous thing to speak it and most retard to make a political agenda out of it ....

Rep. Ginny Brown-Waite should be slammed hard for such an idiotic idea .... an embarrassment to the US military & ppl

I think that's absurd.  Our fallen soldiers buried on foriegn soil is a great testament to the American willingness to help other nations in trouble. I have family buried in France and Germany from both world wars, and I think they would agree with me and wish to remain where they are.

I"ve suggested this in jest, but my true feelings on the matter is that we should leave them there to remind France what we have done for it in the past.  But then again all of my family came home from the war.  My grandmother had 6 brothers all of which served in Europe, except for one who was a AA gunner on a battle ship in the pacific.

What if somebody wan't their family member home though?  Should they not have the right to have the body brought home?

Does the bill include sending back the French bodies that died over here during the Revolutionary War?

if I was French this would piss me off.  I'm pure American, and this pisses me off.

Udie:

I found this on your question

"In all of the war for independence, an estimated 1,112 French lost their lives. "

Wahhhhhhzel,  This is the view of one whacky person, not the bulk of republicans.  You get more and more assinine each day..others may not call you on it, but I will... every time I see it.

As long as the graves are being properly tended, shouldn't we let them rest in peace?  I'm not fond of the French, but I would hate to see the graves dug up as a mere political move.. if they are bering neglected,, that's another thing.  I am assuming that U.S. personel tends these graves.. I honestly do not know.. but my opinion is as above.

I think this lady is being smart.

Think about it. It wont happen and she knows that, I know that, you know that.

But it is being SAID. And that can have an impact on public opinion in both france and the US public.

Kinda like a lawyer saying things not allowed in court, having the judge tell the jury to ignore the lawyer's comments...but in reality the jury heard it and it has a good chance of affecting their decision.

Dude, you should apply to FAUX NEWS....I bet they could use another uninformed talking head.

Rep. Ginny Brown-Waite, (R-Insane) is the one calling for digging up the American corpses in France.

Reps. Bob Ney (R-Idiot) of Ohio and Walter Jones (R-Clueless) of North Carolina are the dipshits behind "Freedom Fries."

"The average age of the Infantryman is 19 years. He is a short haired, tight-muscled kid who, under normal circumstances is considered by society as half man, half boy. Not yet dry behind the ears, not old enough to buy a beer, but old enough to die for his country. He never really cared much for work and he would rather wax his own car than wash his father's; but he has never collected unemployment either.

He's a recent High School graduate; he was probably an average student, pursued some form of sport activities, drives a ten year old jalopy, and has a steady girlfriend that either broke up with him when he left, or swears to be waiting when he returns from half a world away.

He listens to rock and roll or hip hop or rap or jazz or swing and 155mm Howitzers. He is 10 or 15 pounds lighter now than when he was at home because he is working or fighting from before dawn to well after dusk.

He has trouble spelling, thus letter writing is a pain for him, but he can field strip a rifle in 30 seconds and reassemble it in less-in the dark.

He can recite to you the nomenclature of a machine gun or grenade launcher and use either one effectively if he must. He digs foxholes and latrines and can apply first aid like a professional. He can march until he is told to stop or stop until he is told to march. He obeys orders instantly and without hesitation, but he is not without spirit or individual dignity.

He is self-sufficient. He has two sets of fatigues: he washes one and wears the other. He keeps his canteens full and his feet dry. He sometimes forgets to brush his teeth, but never to clean his rifle. He can cook his own meals, mend his own clothes, and fix his own hurts. If you're thirsty, he'll share his water with you; if you are hungry, his food.

He'll even split his ammunition with you in the midst of battle when you run low. He has learned to use his hands like weapons and weapons like they were his hands. He can save your life - or take it, because that is his job.

He will often do twice the work of a civilian, draw half the pay and still find ironic humor in it all. He has seen more suffering and death than he should have in his short lifetime. He has stood atop mountains of dead bodies, and helped to create them. He has wept in public and in private, for friends who have fallen in combat and is unashamed. He feels every note of the National Anthem vibrate through his body while at rigid attention, while tempering the burning desire to 'square-away' those around him who haven't bothered to stand, remove their hat, or even stop talking. In an odd twist, day in and day out, far from home, he defends their right to be disrespectful.

Just as did his Father, Grandfather, and Great-grandfather, he is paying the price for our freedom. Beardless or not, he is not a boy. He is the American Fighting Man that has kept this country free for over 200 years. He has asked nothing in return, except our friendship and understanding. Remember him, always, for he has earned our respect and admiration with his blood."

As I said Wahhhzel, one person is behind the idea... does that make it all republicans?  You should apply for disability, if you're not already on it... you clearly have very limited mental capacity.
My quote was:"This is the view of one whacky person, not the bulk of republicans."  I never said a repulican didn't table the idea, love muffin.  Can you read or are you so jaded against anyone with a differing viewpoint that you don't actually read what they post?

As for freedom fries.... geez... this is another dumb idea that most people, reps and dems, will feel is stupid.

Ya see Wahhhhzel, you even argue with people that share your veiwpoints... you're the most attention needing person over the age of 12 I've ever met... turn your loaner computer back in, love muffin.

I don't remember squeakin  much about personal attacks where you are concerned.  I DO remember saying you dish it out and cry like a girl when it comes back to you.  Take it.

I see mention of tax dollars in Washington... no mention of just republicans in Washington... and back to the point... this is the veiwpoint of only one whacko as near as I can see... not the repulicanS in Washington.  Your rants are going to get called as long as I am reading these boards.. I have tired of your whining and disinformation.  Take it.
