Maybe someone is realising that smart bombs will never get to the root of the problem. Either way, it's a start.

It's a start? Arafat was offered a Palestinian state several years ago. He declined. And various Moslem political forces will see to it that this initiative goes nowhere, too.

Bush has been calling for a palestinian state since his campaign.
His hand got checked by 9/11.
Part of the planning for the war on terror included a democratic palestinian state.
I dont see where he needed much persuading, but if it plays well for Blair at GB well go for him. The announcement now is more to do with an appeal to moderate muslims in the face of an eminent attack on Iraq.

Check out the detail of that proposal. The 'State' was to be divided into Israeli control zones and there was no realistic resolving of the water issue. It wasn't a worthwhile proposal of any kind, and if I was a Palestinian I certainly wouldn't have accepted it.
Bush has been calling for a palestinian state since his campaign.
I see. In that case, why was there no US representative at the peace talks held in London late last year?
Blair has been pleading for Bush to move on this issue for a very long time.
The announcement now is more to do with an appeal to moderate muslims in the face of an eminent attack on Iraq.
That's cynical, but I suspect it is also very true. In the past, it has been Secretaries of State that have been involved in the peace process. Maybe something will happen if the executive decision is behind it.
I hope it's not a red herring.

dowding, the only thing that would make me happier than seeing a palestininan state at last would be the creation of that state in France.
hey, we can dream...
anyway, isreal MUST give up the occupied territories, remove the settlements, hand over control of jersuelem and ALL religous sites to the UN, shoot sharon dead.. Palestine must stop cross border attacks and bombings, denounce hammas, shoot arafat dead.
without this, there will never be peace.

Peace in middle east BAH!!!! Untill every isreali or every muslum is dead there will NEVER be peace in the middle east NEVER NEVER NEVER. They have been killing each other for 2500 years and will go on killing each other long after we are all gone. Dont let the muslims kid you either it has nothing at all to do with isreal and palistine. It has everything to do with teaching kids to hate they know nothing else they dont care about anything else.
Peace in the middle east that dog just wont hunt!

Hammas et al will find a way to de-rail any efforts to set up a Palestinean State...they would be out of work and would have no excuse to kill Jews. I'm all for it...I just don't think it will happen.

Dowding, Bush has been campaigning for a Palestinian state since he was elected.
-
Rubbish Saudaukar. He's not made any effort in that direction at all as far as I can see. There's been no mediation and no help in kicking off negociations. If he has, do me a favour and show me.

The situation in the world didnt allow for it Dowding.
If you think Blair made Bush say this you are crazy.
The UK doesnt need the US to come up with a plan for palestine. If it was such as issue why hasnt the UK put something forward in the UN instead of waiting on Bush?
You overlook to much it your assumptions.
The reason Bush brings this now is because next week we will be killing muslims.
The Isrealis arent onboard with this and the Palestinians have a long way to go before anything will happen. Its an appeal to moderate muslims along the lines of "see we dont really hate muslims".
But Bush has always said he wanted a democratic palestinian state.
If it makes you feel good to claim Blair has influenced Bush to speak up now great. I am sure Blair will take anything he can get at this point.
The biggest obstacle to the situation between isreal and palestine is Sharon. The terror groups in that area know he can be provoked. They use him. Bush knows that.
It may play well for blair but most of us in the US know it really doesnt amount to much.

Bush has done more than you may realise Dowding. Bush called for a Palestinian state more than a year ago. One reason that it may happen is due to the fact that Bush has marginalized Arafat from day one by refusing to deal with him.
