Title: Variance in Delay Trubs
Post by: blackfalcon4 on March 14, 2003, 08:13:44 PM
Hello guys,

Having a small problem not allowing me to play the game on my laptop. Variance in delay looks like a saw blade :(
This problem only seems to be in the game cause surfing downloading doesn't seem to be affected or at least noticable.

The laptop is more than enough to play the game P4 1.7 gf4 64mb etc etc. winxp pro sp1, dell's best 15" screen, connecting thru a router on cable. Conx tests showin 1.5-2mb,
Ping to the arena is a steady 40 (BTW its not the conx)no packet loss.

Diagnosis pointing toward the LT, I figured it was conx at first, tried everything no go, now I say its LT cause at home I connect basically same way (router etc) but  I usually conx wireless at home thru access point. But at home w/wired lan conx sawtooth still there so I'm ruling out conx cause its the same at my shop as at home.

I've tried different service's setups still to no avail, no firewalls, min apps running, just can't figure this one out.

Wasn't able to see if wireless was any better at home, the service was disabled and ran out of time, but will be looking into it.

My home pc runs the game fine, no trubs, disconnects etc..
Just wanta be able to play on my laptop from shop now and then.
Game is fine except the warps.

Any help is much appreciated

A varience like that usually indicates a program running in background doing something every second or so.

Autoupdaters, anti-virus programs, ICQ, instant messengers would all cause something like this.

You won't see it in Task Manager, but something is hoggin up the CPU at regular intervals.

The only other possibility is someone on your network (if you have cable or DSL) is hitting your connection at regular intervals.

Ever run Kazaa?

Nope never ran Kaazaa or any other sharing prog.
I'm starting to think it's hard disk access, got only a 256mb ddr stick in it now, got a 512mb stick otw.

BTW, tried wireless, getting the same variance in the game.

I've been runnin only essential services, dhcp, network conx, and a few others and its still there. tried all kinds of different setups to no avail.

And Skuzzy thanx alot for the help

I have the exact same problem.

For a LAN H2H connection, I was able to help it by limiting my frame rate to 45.  However, the variance still sometimes goes all over especially when the terrain gets complex, like in a valley.  With the frame rate limited, however, the variance change is not as regular (i.e. it's no longer a saw tooth).

Also, I cannot fly over the Internet in either H2H or an arena.  The variance goes all over and planes warp continually.

I've got a 2.0 GHz. P4 Dell laptop running Windows XP Pro, with 512 MB, 40 GB, NVIDIA GeForce 4 440 Go (Dell Mobile) at 1600x1200.

I don't have this problem with my 266 PII, with a 16 MB TNT video card, even though it is below the required specs for AH.  It must be something with this computer.

It flies offline just fine and at 1600x1200 the terrain just wonderful to look at.

BRACKETT

changing to limited at 45fps, now she flatlines
didn't think that it would change things that much but it did.

tried limited 60fps but sawtooth came right back

wish I could get drivers for this chip, only can get em from manufacturer. Anyone know enywhere else I'd be much abliged.

With limited 45fps

Glad I could help.

But, like I said, it seems to help me when I fly H2H over the LAN, although, like I said, it's still not perfect.  But I still cannot fly H2H over the Internet or in a online arena.  I don't get the sawtooth variance, but the variance does go all over and it's unflyable.

I removed the 45 fps limit today and tried turning off all the services running on my machine, four or five at a time.  Nothing helped.  I always had the problem.

One thing I remembered when doing this test is that the saw tooth pattern does not show up on the hosting machine.  It shows up on the machine that joins a H2H game.  That is, if I host a LAN H2H game on my laptop, I get the sawtooth pattern on the 266 PII.  If I host the game on the 266 PII, I get the sawtooth pattern on the laptop.  Hopefully, this additional info will help understand what's going on.

Anyone have any other ideas?
