Now the French Gov't is saying that they'll help the US if Saddam uses WMD against US troops. I hope the US tells them to go to hell. Gee, wtf was 1441 written for? To REMOVE the WMD, the ones the French said they didn't have enough proof that they actually existed???

LOL...stupid is, as stupid does.

I re-read it bud, sounds as stupid as the first time I did so.
It is a "butt covering" excercise by French politicians in case biological or chemical weapons are used. It is stupid because the same politicians have been saying all along that there is no proof Sadaam has them, which in turn is a "cover-up" in their efforts to secure their own trade with Sadaam's Iraq.
Essentially your politicians may as well "Open mouth and insert foot".

French way of saying to Saddom "dont use the weapons we know you have as we helped supply the stuff to make em"
French also hope to have some say in the 25% of all Iraq Oil deal they had. (Blood for Oil indeed)

It's "le mécanicien" Toad ;)
@curval : what do you expect else from politician ?
Now you're sure you won't be backed at all.

Does this mean what I think it means? The French wouldn't board the train when Hitler was invading Poland, either.

French straddle fences to avoid spending on military, they will suck up to the biggest threat, until it becomes apparent that
somebody else will win, then they will 'reverse suck'.
The french, as a military institution, suck.

According to Dowding the politicians in France are merely reflecting the will of the people.
Perhaps you could either confirm this, or deny it so we can all be the wiser.
-
Lets keep the French Gov't separate from "The French", guys...we have french friends/aquaintences on this BBS, I would like to keep them separate.
Just like America, we have many that hate our Gov't, but do not hate Americans in general.

You want my POV I guess ?
I won't anytime back GWB in a war against Iraq as he want to do today .
If he chose the easy way (without UN backing) he must go alone and face the all consequences alone.
Not my war it's his war.
But if he manage to have UN backing I'll follow.

Okay...now what if Iraq uses chemical or biological weapons? Will you support the war then, as your politicians are saying? Or will you still personally "insist" that the UN must consent before France acts?
(PS...I've kept well away from alot of the French bashing on this board Straffo, but when I see the kind of hypocracy that your politicians are sprouting now I simply cannot keep quiet.
I think you and I understand each other on this level. )

When asked why the situation would change matters, Levitte said that "no army is allowed by treaties to use chemical and biological weapons. This is absolutely forbidden and if Saddam Hussein were to use these weapons then he would a create a completely new situation for the whole world."
[/b]
What about when he used them against his own people?
The French simply got outmanuevered and are doing the crab....ya know, it's good to know who your friends really are.
GW is sly like a Fox and has the stones to do what his predecessors failed to....his future dealings with the French will be interesting to watch....I wouldn't be suprised in the least to see him let them in the backdoor when the dust has settled...he knows the importance of strategic alliance, and is a leader wise enough to have the same serve the United States best interest long term.

and yah know why i hate chirac?
because he had an opportunity to join with us and provide a united voice against saddam, and thereby possibly avoid any war at all.
his reticence has encouraged saddam, this will cost AMERICAN lives. and that i will not forget. nor will most americans.
your pissant leader has decided to announce he will veto ANY use of force.. and you, all smug with your 'if he manage to have UN backing" roadkill...
you suck, straffo. don't take it personal. but you surely suck if you can say that, knowing your leader will block any move the Un could make in backing us up.
it is impossible for there to be peace or freedom in iraq with saddam in power. you know this.
France sucks. You suck.
American soldiers, british soldiers lives.... thats what this will cost. plenty of 'em. thanks to toejamheads like chirac.
may france rot in hell.

Not bad. But I can get myself beat up in France within seconds.... Here goes some student-exchange french (1)
"Je baise ta mère, fils de putain."
"Putain de merde. Tu as tes serviettes periodiques dans ton cul"
"Ta mere aime mon queue dans leur grose cul"
"Les Francais mangent de merde toujours"
(1) Man, i was 14 and we were told we could have female exchange partners - too bad mine was like 1.20m and weighed about a ton. OTOH, I awoke the first morning in France - to a gunshot. Saw a dead horse in the courtyard - my exchange partner`s dad was a horse butcher- -- yummy !)

Zut alors!
If Saddam wipes out a couple of divisions with WMD, I think we will be pretty glad to see units from France and other allies saving our ass.

Anti-French feelings grow in marketplace
Tue Mar 18, 7:02 AM ET
Paul Davidson USA TODAY
As war looms, anti-French sentiment is building, according to a CNN/USA TODAY/Gallup poll. And with it has come calls for boycotts of all things French.
While a boycott movement has yet to take hold, there are signs it may be gaining traction,
retailers say. Experts say it could pick up if war in Iraq goes less than smoothly. France has refused to back the United States in its face-off with Iraq's Saddam Hussein.
''If we have French people very closely aligned
with Saddam and there are a lot of casualties, I think the (consumer backlash) could last years,'' says Philip Lempert, editor of SupermarketGuru.com.
Sixty-four percent of Americans have an unfavorable view of France, according to the poll. Two of five consider France either unfriendly or an enemy. And 54% say France is ''stabbing the U.S. in the back.''
''Whether you're for Bush or against Bush, one thing that people can hold onto is that the French are against us,'' says marketing consultant Pam Murtaugh.
So far, anti-French snarling has made no dent in the $28 billion in French exports to the USA. Sales of French wines are down 4.9% over the last 13 weeks, but that reflects a yearlong downward trend, says market research firm AC Nielsen.
Officials of French-owned Airbus and Nissan, nearly half owned by France's Renault, report no sales drop-off. And Nikki Frahm, manager of 13 Ocean Air Travel offices in the Minneapolis area, says travelers have not been canceling trips to Paris.
Yet wine retailer Morrell & Co. in Manhattan says sales of French wines have dippedrecently. ''In the last three or four days, it'sdefinitely gotten worse. You hear people say, 'Let's definitely not get French wines,' '' manager Richard Brigante says.
And touring companies report ''some resistance to booking France,'' says Linda Kundell, spokeswoman for the U.S. Tour Operators Association.
Some retailers are joining in the displeasure. Garden Fresh Market, a three-store chain in the Chicago area, pulled two-dozen French products, from Evian water to Dijon mustard. And Ken Wagner, owner of Roxy's restaurant in West Palm Beach, Fla., dumped French liqueurs and vodkas in the street as TV cameras rolled. ''I'm miffed,'' manager Ken Wagner Jr. says.

Personally speaking, I've never thought French wines were as good as Californian's and Washington wines...but thats my taste.
-
I look forward to the French military joining the US and British military in the Iraqi desert and appreciate any help we can get from them.
We need all the help we can get.
I do *NOT* look forward to, or appreciate the fact that this stunt will more than likely gain Chirac and his band of limp wristed pencil pushing squeakes more years in charge of France.
-SW
-
Absolutely no doubt in my mind that the French are simply looking for a way "in" so they can further undercut U.S. objectives. NO doubt about that.

How long until the Federal Bureau of Investigation becomes the Federal Office of Wisdom? (you have to admit, investigation sounds too much like the french word) :D

Wish I could remember the name, though!

If nerve agent starts floating about, and this time there's no reason to hold back, then I hope we get all the help we can get. I don't see allowing pride to stand in the way of helping save US lives if needed.
We have trained for many years to fight, and generally operate for that matter, in an NBC environment. But it is awkward as hell -- taking a piss, firing a weapon, performing BDA maintenance, radio comms, even drinking water -- and it is still an untested real life factor for our forces.
Chemical agents would seem to be both as deadly as anticipated, but at the same time somewhat fickle. I hope for the best, and I really, really hope those chem alarms work as advertised. But man, it will be a real operational mess even if casualties are kept down. I hope he really doesn't have any WMD, but that's about as likely as NK not having a nuclear weapon.

Are you saying there are no WMD or are you saying THEY (French) are saying (or betting) there are no weapons?
Just for the record... I'll bet any weapons found (at least the first few) will be declared "planted" by the U.S. (err... declared by "allies in opposition to the use of force".. naturally Saddam will say that)
....any takers?

I'm used too it now.
It happened before the recent event too ...
When I started AH some 3 year ago I was very surprised to be insulted by some American just because I was french.
Why this question about my wife ?

Nothing straffo - nothing to do with you or your wife. I was trolling for someone, so don't scare the fish away. ;)
I'm really sad to hear that mate. I thought the nobheads were a minority in real life. Name a few names. It's unacceptable.

I was getting so many rude IMs in the MA I finally gave up my account. LOL Why pay fifty cents a day to get insulted? I can get that for free from my mother in law.

France, and Britain, did honor their pact with Poland. They were reluctant, but that was understandible given their losses in WWI. The French managed a small offensive across the Rhine, attempting to take pressure off of Poland, but didn't sustain it.
Ironically, the problem could have been disposed of earlier with *zero* loss of life. When Hitler directed that German troops move into the Rhineland in violation of the Versaille Treaty, the German General Staff, led by Ludwig Beck, was ready to arrest Hitler as a lunatic, if the French had so much as begun to mobilize the reserves. That was never done, as France was badly polarized between left and right, and still traumatized from the last war. "For the want of a nail, the war was lost."

The average French fighting man is neither more, nor less, brave than his contemporaries from any country. Out or respect for those Frenchmen, both soldier and civilian, who died fighting the Germans during WWII, I will not disparage the competence or courage of their descendants. They shouldn't be stigmatized by us because of the faults or idiocies of French diplomats or generals.

Right, as descendant, in part of immensely courageous French warriors, I can only imagine their chagrin at the current leadership of their country.
