Post by: Curval on March 18, 2003, 12:41:09 PM
This flu bug is hopping borders really fast.

I just got a phone call from a friend in the city who confirmed it.

Everyone knows the Earth will be destroyed by an asteroid soon, then the Sun will go supernova.  This bug is back page news.

I'm still in the camp of "The world will end by disease"(though I don't think this disease it "the one").  Much higher probability if you run the numbers...

I was hoping that someone else in Toronto would confirm it Hortlund...spreading rumours is your job  ;)

"Experts believe it is increasingly likely that the bug responsible for a deadly form of pneumonia which has spread around the world is a new microbe not previously known to medicine."

...and if this doesn't scare the crap out of people something is wrong.  The virus came out of Asia..perhaps the Phillipines or Indonesia?

FYI...

Two die so far....

Unknown if Toronto cases are linked to the cases in Asia (http://www.city.toronto.on.ca/health/pneumonia_report.htm)[/url]

scares me a whole lot more than Osama or Iraq or even NK....

not to mention the fact that a lot of people don't take this kind of thing seriously until it's too late.

history repeats

It doesn't matter if it's acknowledged as a health risk or not. They're doing their best to find out what it is- bacterial or viral.

Beyond that, there is no remedy... well, unless you wanna start injecting bleach in your veins.

Seriously though, either your immune system is up to snuff and you can fight this-- or you can't.

Take a lot of vitamin C & Zinc, drink a lot of liquids, eat chicken soup, wait 2 weeks.

If you are REALLY worried, don't take cold/flu medicine or drink alchohol as they both will slow your body down and make it more difficult to fight the infection. Just drink chamomile tea (hey, it works) for your aches and sore throat.

Now if a new form of the bubonic plague comes around, or HIV/AIDs becomes airborne, THEN we got problems.

No, some just like being prepared...but you lack common sense, so I don't expect you to know that.

who was on the plane with you? who was on the plane before you? who was sitting, coughing & sneezing next to you at the bar, beach, store, McD's?

bio terror would be done in small steps to track its path/life. once the best delivery system/infection route is figured out, then imo the real terror would be unleashed...

Nah, it started somewhere in China...but China is most likely where the "end of the world virus" will begin if that makes you feel better (According to one of the worlds leading Immunologists here at the UW)

You guys do realise influenza pandemics are nothing new?

Something like 20 million were killed world wide shortly after WW1.

So let's drop the biological attack thing.

aparently this is NOT influenza but a new 'bug'

At some point influenza was 'new'. So why does this bug have to a biological attack?

Considering it's only killed 5 people across the whole of asia (high population density), I'd say it was pretty crap as a weapon.

Captain Trips seems more on-target... at least symptomatically

no Dowding, I never said anything about 'manufactured' viruses.. just that this new 'bug' is pretty scarey

I'm not sure if it's a new thing that's all. Everyone's a little more jumpy at the moment and maybe it's getting more press than usual?
