Why can't they get a a decent speech coach for President Bush?
I mean, I support him. I believe his heart is in the tight place, and right or wrong, he believes he is taking the correct action to protect us.
But he cannot deliver an impassioned speech to save his life.
I'll never forget, there was a photo of GWB sitting in an elementary school classroom, paying a visit, when an aide whispered into his ear that the first plane hit the WTC.
There was a profound look of sadness, anger and determination on his face at that very moment. It's that image that tells me the man cares about us.
Why can't the man deliver a speech that delivers the same emotion and passion that I know he's feeling?
And BTW...the word Nuclear is pronounced Noo-Klee-Errr....not Noo-Que-Lar.
Sheesh!
-
Because the personality of certain people change when they are being examined, such as during a speech.
Conversely, if your personality does not change during certain circumstances, you are either a very confident person or do not care about things much.
-
I'm not sure I follow you, David. Could you elaborate. You have an interesting point.
Here's the picture I was talking about.
-
I couldn't agree more. When I saw him slumped against the podium at the speech in the Azoares on Sunday, I was thinking "This is the leader of the greatest country in the world?"
Or the weakling who stood before us last night and delivered the ultimatum while staring into the camera with the "deer in the headlights" look.
Oiy.
Thank God that we have capable leaders like Colin Powell in his cabinet.
In pure stage presence alone, Bush makes Michael Dukakis look like Teddy Roosevelt in comparison. ;)
-
If you guys want stage presence then bring back Reagan.
Or Slick Willie who could tell the biggest lies ever with a smile on his face.
I'll take substance over style any day.
-
Well banana, what can I say....its YOUR turn :) I could NEVER stand listening or watchin Clinton speak, I knew every word out of his mouth was a lie (He proved me right later on) and I detested listening to him..I had to read his speeches afterward...used to drive my wife nuts..Clinton would come on, I'd turn the channel...then read what he had to say in text format.
I can handle listening to a poor speaker, I CANNOT tolerate listening to a liar.
-
I want substance *and* stage presence. See Colin Powell above as a good example of that.

ditto
at least I believe what he says and I know he is not acting
you don't have to be a used car salesman to be pres - thank goodness
if that's his biggest weakness- be thankful...
-
Agree 100% funk.
Bill Clinton could tell you anything, and you would believe it. He was good, and as cooked as a dogs leg. Reagan was even better. It was like listening to your grandfather. Who the hell is going to doubt the wisdom of your grandfather.
There is no question GWB is an honest and caring man, in my mind. He just has terrible stage presence.
But as funk said, I'll take substance of stage presence any day.
Look into that picture I posted. Look into the man's eyes. Tell me you don't see fear and compassion.
Say whatever you want, the man cares about Americans.
-

No, his biggest weakness is that he was selected to the Presidency, not elected by the majority of the people of this country.
But I digress.....
-
Who is Slick Willie ?
not Willy Brandt I suppose ?

LOL, even when facts slap you in the face, you still won't believe them...sad, banana...sad.
-
Well, he was elected based on elements that have been in place for a long time.
The alternative was... "I... invented... the... internet... and... I... have... a... lawk... bawx."
No point in complaining about the "majority" (the majority also happens to be ill-informed mind you) votes, when we all knew well beforehand how presidents get voted into office.
It's like saying, "They won the basketball game only because there was an overtime."
They won.
Oh, and public speaking- I give 2 toejams and a salt lick about public speaking skills. I can't do it worth a damn, but I can put more substance in a paper than those who could give off the aura of being a good public speaker.
Public speaking is for the easily impressionable.
Like pretty wrapping paper on a turd. "It's wrapped nice, it's gotta be nice!"
Not saying your easily impressionable banana... but public speaking isn't where anything is at... Hitler was an excellent public speaker.

Oh yeah, he we go with the "Gore won" toejam.
Tell me what your savior, Al Gore would be doing today.
Same thing as his former boss, Bill Clinton....looking the other way and hoping for the best.
At least GWB has the balls to make the tough decisions.
Bill would launch a couple of cruise missles, and then go pick up a hooker.

Powell got his lunch money stolen by the French. He is inept.

Ok, since I seem to hit a nerve with discussing his right to be President, I'll concede(again) that he is our President.
Now then, back to the topic of this thread.....
You Bush fan boys think that it's not important that the President of the United States is not only a strong leader behind the scenes, but also a strong leader in the public eye?
One out of two is good enough for the President of the United States?
LOL! Ok, I'll remember that when we argue in the next presidential election.

LOL! Good one ra. :D Made my day!
-
I'm no Bush fan boy banana, but public speaking doesn't make a great leader... it barely makes a good leader. And public speaking certainly does _NOT_ make a strong leader. It gives off the aura of a smooth talker. Smooth talkers get the ladies, and out of hot situations... minus their pride.
I didn't even vote in this past election, so it's not my place to complain about who's in charge... but Al Gore would of been the biggest uber-screwup this country would of ever committed.
-SW
-
Bush has a more 'emotional' personality type than Clinton or Reagan. This means that things effect him more. For instance, when he was told of the WTC attacks. He was most definately feeling some strong emotions, such as anger and worry and such. But even still, when you are being 'examined' by millions of people while you speak, it tends to make you more conservative in the things you say- at least with certain personality types.

First off, I've never been a Bush fan...I've stated time and time again on this BBS that "2000 election for choices sucked"
Second, Bush is ahelluva lot better choice than Gore and 3 times as good as Clinton (Clinton is just popular with your type because you're greedy, your 401k flourished under a rare technology boom, and the market has corrected itself)
Can you answer me this: What was Clintons legacy? What the hell did he DO for 8 years?
But I digress. :)
-
hitler was a great speech maker, he could realy rally the people behind him. clinton was good also "i feel your pain"
-
So let me see if I understand this, banana...
You'd rather have an untrustworthy man as President, as long as he gives good sound bites, rather than an honest man who is a poor public speaker?
Or I assume that you are intimating that Bill Clinton was both honest and a good speaker.
Hey, how about good old Jimmy Carter Honest guy. Fair speaker.
-
Sure, SeaWulfe, I understand that a good speaker does not a great president make.
But, at times like this....it sure doesn't hurt!
It's embarassing to see him slumping against podiums and mis-pronouncing words, though. It makes him look weak, and I don't like weak presidents in time of war.

The business cycle is what made your 401(k) run. It has nothing to do with the presidency. The market was bound to correct, and just as itwas overvalued in 2000, it's completely undervalued now. Simple economics, the business cycle and maybe a touch of Federal Reserve policy.
If you want to blame someone, try Alan Greenspan, who did everything he could to slow the equity markets including all those interest rate hikes. Of course, regardless of whether or not Greenspan acted, the market would have corrected. It has nothing to do with who sits in the Oval office.
Clinton's legacy? 1 blowjob, 1 stained dress, 1 near impeachment, 1 Somalian folly, and the launch of Hillary's career in politics.
WTG, Slick Willy.

I said......I want a president who is a strong leader and a strong public speaker. I don't know that Bush is even a strong leader.....and it is certainly evident that he is not a strong public speaker in times of crisis.
You guys crack me up. Instead of defending Bush's skills(or lack thereof), you pull out the "Slick Willie" and "Jimmy Carter" cards that you always have ready when you can't refute an opinion with facts.
Rip, Rip, Rip.....
I love ya, man. :)
Someday we gotta have that pitcher of beer and discuss all of the past president's foibles. ;)

WASHINGTON:
With hundreds of thousands of troops poised for combat in Iraq, veterans are the next group to have their necks stretched on Spurious Georges chopping block of "compassionate conservatism."
The House budget plan on the floor this week will attempt to slash $15 BILLION dollars over the next decade in Veterans benefits to help make room for chimpys tax cuts for the rich.
The Republican plan, which the House Budget Committee adopted last week on a party line vote will chop $467 BILLION from mandatory spending programs including the Veteran Affairs Department, Medicare, and Medicaid in the next ten years to offset $1.5 TRILLION dollars, the bulk of which chimpy proposes to give to the richest 1% of people in our country via so-called "tax cuts"......in reality this is nothing more than the rape of the American tax-payer and the nations treasury.
The VA cuts will take place in disability compensation, education benefits, pensions and health care.
It is unconscionable to cut benefits and services for disabled veterans at a time when we have hundreds of thousands of them in harms way RIGHT F*CKING NOW!
"Compassionate Conservatism" my ass.....the Failure in Thief doesn't give a toejam about Americans, the nation, or the Constitution he swore to protect and uphold.

Did I stutter??
Did you read the thread?
I already said I believe GWB cares about Americans, and has the balls to make tough decisions. I said I believe he is an honest man. Thats a strong leader.
That's GWB's positive attributes. It's 3 more than Clinton ever had.
Clintons attributes?
He cared about covering his ass.
He had the balls...they were resting on Monica's chin. Too bad that was all he ever used them for.
And he was so honest, he almost got impeached.
GOOD SPEAKER, THOUGH!!!
-
Possibly... although, I've always been a firm believer in substance, not appearance and actions speaker louder than words.
However, just for the sake of it, if we were to compare Al Gore and Goerge Bush Jr in public speaking- both are equally as bad, atleast according to how a public speaker is judged.
A monotonous tone is the absolute worst thing you could ever put forth as a public speaker, and Al Gore sounds like a robot from a movie from the '50s.
People claim "Bush is an idiot" and other nonsense like that because they are mistaken that public speaking denotes intelligence.
That's why I say public speaking is for the easily impressionable, because it's all just a nice facade to make the general public complacent with the decisions that the president makes.
Clinton did nice things while he was in office, yes... but he was a liar and a complete piece of toejam. He allowed his entire administration to ransack the White House when his term was up.
If you think that's a good leader, or a good president, then would I be a good friend if I came to your house and stole all your things, pissed on the floor, and rubbed my bellybutton on your walls? What if I lied to you straight faced that I did not do all of the above despite your neighbors telling you they saw me doing so and had photographs proving this?

Its too late for Weazel, Bush's Anti-Liberal Ray Gun has already struck. Save yourselves.
Clinton was an excellent speaker, but while he said alot, he didnt say much.
Bush is a terrible speaker, but while he doesnt say much, he says an awful lot.
Im not really a Clinton hater, but that "bite the lip to show concern" routine cracked me up everytime. That and the thumbs up.

banana, don't take any of this the wrong way. I don't mean to insult you, I just hear these things every day and despite my rebuttals- the people still couldn't see the point I was making.
You were the first one to say something about public speaking here on the UBB, so I wanted to put my thoughts down digitally.

You know exactly what I mean...the troops you "support" so much.
If you "support" them I damn sure wouldn't want to see you turn against them.
It's Golly-geened pathetic that you support them getting f*cked by the current regime when they're in the Middle East preparing to fight for YOU!

There is nothing "Presidential" about GWB. I gotta agree with the Dixie Chicks...He's embarassing. I keep looking for the remote control in Cheney's hand.

After 8 years of the greatest conjob in American history, I continue to find Bush and his simplistic demeanor refreashing.
As far as the Chixie Dicks are concerned: Ive only heard the one pugg face mouth off. What are the opinions of the far better looking other two? Might want to get a consensus from the band before ascribing what one said to all three.

Weazel,
Bush has not made the decision to commit our troops to combat on the basis of a whim. It takes guts to do what you think is right when the opposition is so vocal. Our troops are being asked to do what they signed up to do...protect our nation, its people, and their security. Sometimes that involves taking military action to to derail a future threat.
Or do you want us to wait until this threat reaches full maturity? After the war is over, and our troops have uncovered the evidence of weapons of mass destruction that so many of you critics of Bush maintain does not exist, will you be willing to admit that a threat actually exists?
Or do you just like to tweak conservative noses?

he's the opposite of your 'resistance' of WWII.. in office via overwhelming majority, sustained in office for 8 years by popular support, but now that he's outta office you can't find more than 12 people in the whole diddlying country that will admit to having voted for him.

Clinton never got 50% of the vote, 43% first time, 49% the second. Still a consistent overachiever vote wise. :)

No personal attacks. Just before I decide to regard/disregard someone's opinion, I try to find out if they have more experience on the topic than I do.
I didn't say you were lying about VA cuts. It's common information. I said you make up bogus facts, then use them in your arguments.

As far as my being pissed about VA cuts I don't even have a dog in that hunt, I'm part of the "lost generation" of vets without any education or medical benefits due to the time period I served.
I don't begrudge that fact since I didn't serve under fire...but to reduce them for people who deserve them is a pretty toejamty way to treat the men and women combat veterans.
Every Congressman or Senator who allows this abortion to pass needs to be sent a message at election time.

Listen to Bush (one and two) Clinton, Blair.... any world leader
You must notice that all leaders, pause after every three to four words. It makes them sound like lousy speakers.
