Hello everybody and thx again for the nice week on FinRus Winter! Best moments when I was there was on thuesday evening (morning between 03-06 here), when there was up to 60 players!;)
And I had a brand new joystick which I couldn't handle...
Now I need your feedback from FinRus Winter map, because I know there is much things to adjust. The map was not yet ready in this week and we didn't had time to make couple of fine adjustments and skins to it.
So can you please write here your honest opininons and criticism for the fighting in the snow white landscapes, winter skins and all things you remeber from this terrain. I really want that you write the negative opinions, too, because I want that the map is finished and good in the next winter 2004 (?) when it maybe comes to arena again!
So, tell me:
NEGATIVE THINGS:
For ex. I noticed that seeing enemy aircrafts against the white/green dotted ground was very difficult.
Textures made "lines" to landscape, they're not finished.
The terrain is poor looking: mostly white and green colours.
POSITIVE THINGS
Seeing enemy against the white ice was very easy (sometimes too easy...LOL)
Etc.
After your feedback it is to me much more easy to adjust the terrain better to the next update!
For example after feedback for my Finnish friends in last week I get a good idea: I ask Squirrel to make there one tile which we can call "Front": there is for ex. bomb craters, brown and gray ground (after artillery and mordars), cut trees etc. I mean it looks like a Frontline's must look and it should give more colours and details to this poor looking terrain! ;)
Gentlemen, start your engines and write here your opinions, please! I really don't hurt my mind when you tell me the negative things, because I need to know them making the terrains even more better!;)

I thought that this made it more realistic!
Not that I advocate that all maps should have such contrast, but it was nice for a change. It also gave "low" GVs a better chance to get around without being spotted 15 miles away while their in a forest!
NEGATIVE THINGS:
Needs ice cutters!
I'll try to thing of some real ones...

Kanttori The Finrus map is almost my favorite map. My biggest problem is my computer. My new video card should be here any day, I hope that helps. This map along with some other video demanding terrans are killing me. This along with my everlasting "nose bounce" has eliminated me from the dogfight all together. I have had to resort to BnZ in low popilated areas. The upgraded "The Slot" map was also a blast. I think I favor it because its harder for guys to furball. They actually have to fly a ways most of the time to a fight and that helps eliminate the hamsterwheel furball mentality. Sure, there are some bugs in your terrain but hell, all the maps still have them. Not aimed at you at all but I would like to see some one master a single map before any others come out. I think you guys do a demanding job. I can't even get the editor to open ...hehehehehehe much less make a map. I can'y even get the skins painted.
I flew the P-40E all week and I must say, there is something wrong with it. I will also keep my stand that the FM2 is toooo strong, its like a tank, it shouldt be. God only know why the P-40B is even in there!!!!!
...sorry back to your map bugs....I dont see any more or less bugs in your terrain any more than I see any in all the other terrains. I like the realistic cammo.
I think all of AH FMs need to be re-modeled. The airplanes they can model right, they wont, and the ones they caint, they over do it. You know, a 450mph A6M2, a P-51 that flys like a J-3 Cub...... anyway.

Nice map. Now if only we can get Pyro to code other shades of morning and evening light other than shades and hues of reddish brown or brownish red. ;)

While a damn fine map Kanttori I just have to say I like the "Spring" Fin-Rus map better.
Your camo jobs on the vehicles and structures are TOP NOTCH. Damn difficult to spot things for bombing runs. If it weren't for the icons it would be next to impossible. I actually had to fly lower than the target (a shore battery on a hill near P2) to spot it against the sky.
Didn't get to try anything on the ground wish I had. Bet it was a hoot!
IMPROVEMENTS:
How about putting a flashing red beacon on the Shore batterys so you can see them from the air. :D
Didn't like that you could only get 190's from certain fields but that came with the set-up. We will cope.
Great Map Kanttori - can't wait to see what you put out next. !

Missed this one completely because of work commitments. Anyone have a link to it so i can download it?
Thanks in advance

Excellent map...
Lots of fun to fly and fight on.
I loved the big banks of clouds.
Skins are *amazing*. I love the P-40 skin especially. It gives a very realistic feeling to the fighting - Who Sees, Wins. I'd love to see even shorter distances before Icons pop, say 3k for both sides.
The only issue I had with planes was the FM2. Would the F4F be a good substitute for the Buffalo? If not, why not? My recollection is that the F4F was developed from the Buffalo, and the FM2 was developed from the F4F...
The only issue I had with the map was the scale of the map...especially after having so much fun in the Slot the week before. I heard it was 1:4 scale, when it should be closer to 1:2 scale or even 1:1 scale. The bases are altogether too close to one another, IMNSHO. I don't think it's unreasonable to have a minimum distance of 25-35 miles between the closest bases in a historical arena.
But that's me... :)
The Slot was the BEST.
RusWinter was second best because it was more crowded.
Tunisia is not so much fun, it's *too*crowded.
Thanks for the excellent map...

Thx for your feedback, fellows!
DamPhyno, We have two maps from Finland area scale 1:1 (Gulf of Finland) and 1:1,5 (Murmansk) under work with Camo. Coming out before summer! And they are really HISTORICAL!;)

This has been discussed in length before. The F4F flight performance is closer to the BW, but it has 6 guns and has really poor flying characteristics. The BW was famous for very being very nice and easy to fly. The FM2 handles much like a BW, although it performs a bit better.
Also, all the VVS planes in AH are the "über versions" of the planes that fought on the Finnish front, so I think its only fair that at this time the FM2 is being used as the subsitute for the BW. I like to call it the "turbobrewster".
The prototypes of F4F by Grumman and F2A-1 by Brewster competed for the first monoplane fighter contract for the US navy in 1939. Brewster's design won and the first batch of 43 planes was built. In November 1939 Soviet Union attacked Finland. US sold the BWs to Finland, including the prototype, for a total of 44 BWs. These planes became the most succesful fighters in aviation history.
The next Brewster batches with improved engines and armour resulted in a heavier plane which had poor performance. Like Pappy Boyington said: "The Brewster was a sweet plane, it could turn inside a phonebooth. But then some engineer went and ****ed it up." These later version were nicknamed Buffaloes. It was a "completely" different plane than the light and maneuverable planes Finland had.
The improved version of Grumman's F4F won the next contract, the rest is history. FM2 was the 1943 version of the F4F.
Like I said, the FAF Brewster it is not a "buffalo", it is the export version of the F2A-1: "Brewster Model 239". :)

Hello CurtissP-6EHawk,

What is your source on the 100 P-40Fs? According to my source, RED STARS 4 by C-F Geust and G Petrov, P-40 delivered to USSR are as follows:
P-40 delivery summary:
P-40B----- >471
P-40C----- >195+48
P-40E--------691
P-40F------------
P-40G---------21
P-40K--------313
P-40L--------100
P-40M--------220
P-40N--------980
Total allocated: 2430
Total arrived: 2097
So, according to this source there were no Fs delivered. Also, I couldn't find any mention of Fs being delivered to USSR from Francis Dean's America's Hundred Thousand. I did a web search and found that 100 -figure from couple of websites though. Anyways, there weren't any P-40Fs in the finnish front....B and E models were widely used. Finnish fighters didn't enounter any P-47s either.
We could take away the FM-2 but then 109s would practically be the only fighters allied side would see in the air (along few 190s from the german fields here and there). FM-2 adds a bit of variety to the planes allied side gets to fight.
FM-2 is well countered by the 1944 model La-5FN and the Yak-9T sporting a 37mm cannon. In the summer of 1944 there were some FNs on the Karelian front (159 IAP) but regular La-5 and La-5Fs were much more common. And AFAIK those FNs in the finnish front were early prodution aircraft. There were around 25 Yak-9Ts.
So if we would follow the history as accurately as possible with the AH planeset we'd have heavely perked La-5FN and Yak-9T and no FM-2. I don't think that would be much fun for the allies...

But Camo, you'r "not small talking" feedback of the terrain?

Humbug! The matches were perfect on both sides. Particularly loved the icebound fleets. Great touch that was.

I love this version of the map as much as the green version.
It really gives you the sense of your little area of the war..IE your field and the area 50 miles arround it.
The white land scape is a bit to get used to. But I really enjoy it.

no to hijack but,
hawk have you tried dampening you stick to get rid of nose bounce?
