... ok, it's bloody amazing. :)
I just wish I had a better machine. My 1.2 GHz Athlon, Geforce2 64MB, 512 MB RAM set-up really creaks. I've got it set at 1024x768x32, but it's a little bit jerky.
Any tips on getting the frame rates up? Anybody got an Saitek X-36 profile they could point me to?
Cheers. :)
BTW, they just need to have a Cinemaware kind of storyline running alongside the dynamic campaign and they'd have the best single player game in the world, ever.
-
what os?
winxp needs a gig of ram to run smooth
512 is good on win 98
-
works on Duron 800 MHz, 640 MB, GeForce 2MX.
Unless you find yourself over big city, that is.
Greatest feature, IMO, is bullet hit option. You can see the hit and penetration. .50 cals are becoming notorious for leaving the plane fly, but killing the pilot almost every time.
-
Win98 SE. I'm using DirectX 9, my drivers are the detonator 30.82 I think. They are the most up to date drivers for my Hercules Prophet II card anyway.
I love that open topped, 'Catch the Pigeon' style Ruskie bomber. The BT-3? :)
-
Hristo,
When I shoot them with .50cal, they tend to often blow up.
I was all the joy when I got from Hurri I to Brewsters in the Finnish campaign.
Instead of pinging uselessly the rear of certain planes with all the ammo, I found them blowing up before me. :D
Anyway.. how do you activate the bullet hit thing?

Your bottle neck is your card...
A geforce4 mx 460 would help a bunch...
(cheap card)
the old geoforce 2 is a great card but really showing its age....
exp: when I had a 1000mhz duron and upgraded from the geforce 2 to a geoforce 4 4200 it was like night and day..
Recently my 4200 cooked and I bought a ATI 9100 (cheap card) upgraded my 1000mhz duron to a 1.67 ghz XP 2000..
Best $104 dollars ive spent in a while...
to say the least im happy with my upgrade... 1942 under the duron would slow down.. now with 670mhz upgrade with increased cache on the cpu really makes a difference.
2 jumpers on my board to switch from 200mhz bus to 266mhz... went from a 1000mhz to 1.67ghz....
sorry to rant on...this is the type of upgrade i like no BS....
your card is the bottle neck.. Tomshardware.com has a good article on about every processor combination with video card out there... including old cards like the riva 128 monster 1 etc...
Check it out i helped me with my upgrade...
2 cents,

In the mean time i would adjust you color from 32 bit to 16 bit... the graphics should get a increase due to the fill rate being reduced from 32 to 16 bit color...
If you can tolerate 800 x 600 that would help a bunch too...

I have to play at 800x600 to be able to see the damn planes to shoot them down. I get about the same performance at 800x600x32 as I did at 1024x768x16 btw... I turn off stencil buffer and then max everything out and it's usually around 30fps I would guess. In big battles (30+ planes) it does slow down some though.
Hell I haven't hardly played anything online since I got this thing. The dynamic campain kicks major arse! I really love being able to get lost on the map! and the 109g10 and 14 and k4 absolutely RULE :D
-
I'm in that boat Udie... been on IL2 FB instead of WB...
I do get to enjoy all the graphics so it's even more immersive.
(1600x whatever) everything maxed out..
it's simply amazing.

Do you know the sad story of a Russian release of IL-2 FB?... It's a dramatic tale...

Hehe you are lucky :)
People here look for English version in "one-eyed" stores.
1C, the Russian company that released it here had a major f#$kup, and released the "Beta" version that has bugs including bugs in StarForce copy-protection that make playing impossible, and the version they printed expires in May. Angry customers almos tore Oleg apart :(
-
ya know.. you'd think Oleg would make sure it was right in his home country!
play the English version.. it has Russian speech :)

Dowding,
I've got the same exact setup and settings...including the Saitek.
I didn't build a Saitek profile, but when I get home, I'll try to take some screenies of the in-game profile.
I'll check my frame rates also....it actually is playing smooth on my machine.

I have a Saitek X36 profile I built myself... you can mess around with it as much as you like, be sure to examine all modes- as I put certain functions on different modes for the same joystick button _BUT_ a lot of functions are the same throughout the modes. Example: Flaps up/down is always the index finger hat on the throttle pull up for flaps up, push down for flaps down. Gear is always the "A" button on the joystick (next to launch), I have it setup so that the up arrow is manual gear up (for I16) and manual gear down on Mode 2 and Mode 3- Mode 1 is the one keypress gear up/gear down. The title of the file is "To play Il-2 Sturmovik 2".. just import it and point it to the il2fb.exe file so it will load when the game runs.
Also I don't have one of my hats, and actually don't use any hats for views. I use a trackball mouse affixed to my joystick for that, so there should be a free hat to assign views to.
Just be sure to go through it and change things as needed.
As for your setup- here's a BIOS tweak page (if you want to mess around with it, pay close attention to the AGP settings) to get some more performance from your PC. Don't hold me accountable, if it doesn't work after you change the setting- there's a jumper on your motherbord "Clear CMOS"- unplug your PC's power cable, move the jumper to that for 2-3 seconds, then move it back to the "Normal CMOS" (or something like that) pins and it will clear the CMOS to default settings.
http://www.adriansrojakpot.com/Speed_Demonz/BIOS_Guide/BIOS_Guide_Index.htm
For your GF2, use the GF2 settings from the drop down menu, THEN go back to the drop down menu and select "CUSTOM". This applies GF2 settings, but allows you to tweak it. Set texture compression to S3TC, this should alleviate the jerkiness. I have a GF4, and the default settings the game shipped with weren't quite right to get the game to run properly so I had to tweak it slightly.
The game runs smooth in virtually all conditions, except certain areas on the Finland map (around Leningrad for the most part because of SO many varying city textures)... so I don't play any campaigns/missions near Leningrad anymore.
My system:
PNY GF4 Ti4200 (300Core/545mem)
Athlon XP 2000+ (running stock speed/266FSB)
768MB PC133 SDRAM
SB Live!
Win98
DirectX8.1

anyone have a good Cougar profile for FB?
I began one a while back but the snow has been MAKING me go out skiing a lot......... sooo.. I've neglected my programming, house cleaning, work, shopping, etc etc
(snif.. hmm.. laundry time, no wait.. snowing again)
-
I just use the IL2 one of the Cougar page Wlfy. It works fine.
Im going to start the 41 ceteral front german campaign again. Im setting turning on the option to finish a mission without completing it. Some of them are just ludicrous.
-
Thanks for advice guys. :)
An upgrade isn't really an option at the moment - my flat is being built right now, and the money has to go on things for that. Like cutlery. Boring I know. :D
I'll check out that profile SWulfe. Cheers.
have it setup so that the up arrow is manual gear up (for I16)
Eh? You have to manually wind up the gear on the I16!? No wonder I was lagging behind the formation!
Wlfgang - I'll have to ask you to not mention snow or skiiing again. You know how I feel about it... besides, some friends of mine are going boarding in Canada (Banth) tommorrow, and before I bought the flat, I was supposed to be going. Damn! :)
-
I just started a late war 109g10 campain. Kept getting killed 10 or so missions in in the 1941 Stalingrad (109g2) campain.
I'm 3 missions in with 13 kills :D (full real cept for icons and padlock) I think it may be a bit too easy w/ the g10 so I may go back to the stalingrad campain and start over. My main problem is that I always start BnZ'ing an enemy plane and when I get done with it I look around and I'm surrounded by 10 or so enemy with NO friendlies in sight. That damn G10 just climbs and climbs and climbs and climbs. and that mk108 OMG I wish I could marry it, that's how much I love it
-
Yeah, the I16 had a manual crank for raising the gear... so in someone's moment of infinite wisdom, they thought it would be more "realistic" to have to push a button 40 times to bring the gear up, then press a different button 40 times to bring the gear down.
There's 2 red lights on the I16's dash that indicate gear down, they turn off when the gear is being raised and 2 green lights will turn on when the gear is raised and locked.

er.. I meant shovelling slush and digging out from ice
yeah.. that's it :)
*edit*
yeah , that's 'real' fun eh SW?
-
Heh, Wlfgang. Banth probably sucks anyway. All that beer, and snow and snowbunnies - who wants that kind of fun? ;)
I did that texture compression thing at it works much better, Swulfe. Thanks for the profile too. :)

Also, I must add that engine management is becoming the most enjoyable feature in FB for me.
Just try an Emil in the verticals - have to watch the RPM gauge not to exceed 3000 RPM, or engine dies. No lights flashing, no warning - engine just quits in seconds. Now add some mixture controls and radiator flaps, all in the middle of a dogfight. Fantastic !
