Title: Turkey?
Post by: Udie on March 21, 2003, 08:21:58 AM
WTF are these guys doing moving their troops to the border?  I wonder if they are planning on making a run for the norther iraq oil fields and killing a few kurds on the way?

I honestly think it's time to rework this whole NATO deal. What the hell kind of allies do we have anyway?

Why do you think they turned down the US/UK to station troops there?

Yeah I put that together last night when I saw the report.  Well if they try anything I for one think we should protect the Kurds....

I haven't heard anything on the news about it, but...  aren't they probably just trying to keep the kurds out of their country?  Or are they doing something aggressive?

I think, given the votes in the Turkish parliament, that should they make a grab for territory, they'll be poitely asked to leave once Coalition forces establish themselves in the Kurdish North.

If they don't go, I hope we remove them. Time for the BS to drop by the wayside.

I suspect that the Turks want the northern oil field of Iraq.

Or it might be ethnic clensing time.

Either way, first turkish soldier that steps over the border needs to die in a really bad way.

You should learn something about the region before you offer so inane speculation.

Turks go there to prevent 5 million iraqi kurds upraising and drive for independence that would spread to 15 million kurds living in Turkey and few million in Iran once the US breaks down the Iraqi state.

I bet that whatever the disagrement we had with Turkey, they will threaten or invade kurdish north with our full agreement and cooperation.
It may not be convenient for us to bomb and slaugher kurds raising in pursuit of self-determination and liberty afer we started the whole thing "to bring liberty to the opressed population" of Iraq. Here is where Turks will prove immensely helpfull - as they were in torturing suspects we did not want blamed on us.

We will say to kurds. "Surely, we support you - but if we give you independence, all those turks will invade and slaughter you. And being NATO allies wth them, we would not care protect you - especially since you have no oil. So we will keep you split among three countries and ruled by foreigners for your own good!"

Toad: I think, given the votes in the Turkish parliament, that should they make a grab for territory,

Like they need another few million troublemaking kurds in their country! They are more likely to evict their own kurds into Northern Iraq to make them our problem. :)

I think CNN said something about the turkish troops going in to divert the possible hords of iraqi refugees that most likley would head for the turkish border.

During the 91 war the border was "overrun" by refugees and the turkish troops are tasked with and are at the moment setting up refugee camps on the iraqi side of the border.

Turkey is a critical NATO ally, and we much better off with them than without them.  They are also our best Muslim ally.  They are well within their rights to move their army to the border when there is a war going on next door.

The Turks want control of the water that flows from Kurdish area into Turkey.

Which is one of the reasons Turkey doesn't want a declared Kurdistan. the Kurds would have a measure of control over Turkey.

Turkey can be what Iraq (regarding Kurds) is in 10 years from now, just don't ship 'em too many weapons...

Why is this a surprise? The "Kurdish problem" has been a major concern among critics of the Wolfowitz doctrin, along with other ethnic conflict issues, for quite some time. I would imagine (certainly hope) the administration has worked out some anwers. It will be interesting to see exactly what they are.
