Montreal fans boo Star-Spangled Banner
MONTREAL (AP) -- Fans booed during the playing of the U.S. national anthem before the New York Islanders' 6-3 victory over the Montreal Canadiens on Thursday night.
The sellout crowd of 21,273 at Bell Centre was asked to "show your support and respect for two great nations" before the singing of the American and Canadian national anthems.
But a significant portion of the crowd booed throughout Star-Spangled Banner in an apparent display of their displeasure with the U.S.-led war against Iraq. More than 200,000 people turned out for an anti-war demonstration in Montreal last Saturday.
"I'm sure there are a lot of people against the war, but some things people can't control," said New York's Alexei Yashin, who is from Russia. "They were probably showing what they feel about it."
Teammate Mark Parrish, a native of Bloomington, Minn., was upset hearing the boos.
"I came to the game pretty pumped up, but once I heard that it really got me going," Parrish said. "So I guess I can thank them a little bit for getting me more pumped up."
-
I would have skated off the ice had I been an American player on that team.
-
Montreal is the french part of Canada.
Enough said.
-
what losers
yep.,.. Canada's next
-
They are losers. But once again it is French Canada. Without that part of Canada the country would have elected different governments over the past 40 years and would be much different.
It is the Liberal government of Canada that you should focus your anger on.
BTW a couple of years back it was becoming common for the US fans to boo Oh Canada at hockey games. We ignored it.

This is the same area that produced Celine Dion, enough said.
-
being bad waiters isn't enough for them?
lazs
-
hockey .. nuf said :)
-
Yeah, the funniest part about that is that New York kicked their tulips 6 to 3! LOL!
-
After they won, the team should have skated a few laps around the rink flying the stars and strips in one hand and the bird in the other.
SOB

Don't forget Brian Adams. They can never be forgiven for that one.

how quickly thou doest protest
who was it bashing the Americans for the war ???
instead of the government?
and having New York win was total justice.
Stars and Stipes forever !!! would have been playing in my head!
(I like SOB's solution and bird)

You have more opposition to the war in the US than you see in Canada. Our Liberal party of Canada is full of corrupt and morally bankrupt individuals lead by a corrupt and morally bankrupt Prime Minister. What can you say? I didn't vote for them. They have huge support among ethnic voters and usually win the key rideings in Southern Ontario due to this support

Well we can't help the fact that you are a love muffin and proud of it can we?

Well they might have if the majority of the players on the US team were not Canadian also.
-
The policies of our president don't regard world opinion as important. Why should you?
-

is that the best you can do? lol
let's see.. who was it that bood the US Anthem? retards
You have more opposition to the war in the US than you see in Canada.
you obviously missed the point.
I'm speaking to the fact that people blame the American public for what the American government does.
Well they might have if the majority of the players on the US team were not Canadian also.
gee.. I wonder why all the Candians move to America and play for American teams.. hell they're even becoming American citizens now...
The policies of our president don't regard world opinion as important. Why should you?
heh.. even American opinion is ignored
-
Booing a national hymn or a flag is not a nice thing to do.
I ask myself what will happen in the future with US crowd and France's "marsillaise", what do you guess?
Usually the US crowd is respectful for others symbols, but I ask myself: what will happens with France's ones?.
-
it'll be interesting to find out.
I don't know but it seems that most French citizens agree with the French government...
that makes a difference IMO
-
If I were a hockey player I would become a US citizen as well. Our income taxes are about twice as high as the US.
You can blame whoever you want but the fact remains that the average Canadian citizen supports the US. The liberals have always had a large streak of Jacques Chirac syndrome in them.
There are Canadian business leaders taking out ads in the Newspaper lamb basting the government for their stand in the past week.
Oh and it is easy to be a drunken hick and lout. Nothing to be proud of there son. Fat drunk and stupid is no way to go through life.

you were doing fine until you started referring to yourself.

*edit*
btw.. there is a Canadian team that'll probably make a run for the Cup.. but it definately isn't Toronto !
-
Toronto in 4 first round baby.
-
:) it is definately about time... my old roomie was a leafs fan. been a loooong time.
but Vancouver is looking pretty damned strong...
(damn.. hijacked by myself)

They boo the canadian anthem in Quebec too. Big deal.
You dont know what they were booing about anyway. They may have still been booing your referee in last years womans hockey gold medal game.

You know that was the greatest hockey game I ever watched bar none. It almost redeemed the Olympics in my mind after all the judging scandels. It showed a team can win on guts and determination despite biased and one sided refereeing.
BTW that ref should have been banned from any international matches forever.
-
LOL good point Pongo :)
see you guys up North know all about the inter-country rivalry... to us Americans it seems strange to have 2 national languages (although if some people had their way America would add Itallian to it's native language(s))
-
"what losers
yep.,.. Canada's next"
Yeah and two days after those American pilots murdered four Canadian ground troops in Afganistan the fan in Detroit boo'ed the Canada Anthem on two separated occassions.
I hear the pilots are going to get off as well, it's the American way.
-
As stated above .. they are FRENCH CANADIAN.......
If we can forgive having our flag displayed UPSIDEDOWN you Americans should not be too offended by them.
-
LOL skernsk.. too true.
I hear the pilots are going to get off as well, it's the American way.
I assume you think they did it on purpose?
It's an unfortunate thing about war.. accidents happen, it's a dangerous business.
-
bite the hand that feeds you nadians.... bad move.
Thats ok Chinese are buying up their country faster than they can eat their Kraft meals. So be it.

They were given two direct orders not to drop but they dropped their bombs anyhow, seems pretty plain and simple.
As for the Detroit fans booing the Canadian anthem a few days after well.....maybe it was an accident.
-
Torque, you are an idiot.
-
That's the best you can do Funked?
-
and two days after those American pilots murdered four Canadian ground troops
damn, you aren't too bright, are you Torque?
Murder requires INTENT to deprive one of life to be murder. but it sounds nice and you get to be a victim when you cry it.
-
i dont care if they boo...they are canadians. i would be pissed if they were americans booing.
people are entitled to their beliefs. thank god we live in countries that you can actually express your disagreements with state policies. try that in Iraq! hehe
but from now on...im gonna boo everytime i drink a molson. :D
btw torque...chill man. we all still love you kanuks...your our brothers to the north.
-
too bad reality isn't that cut and dry Torque
You should know better than to focus on such a minute section of that reality.
but from now on...im gonna boo everytime i drink a molson
LMAO
reminds me of a funny molson commercial I've only seen on canadian tv.. the one with the guy carrying the hockey bag down the street..
-
Can't believe this hasn't been said yet!!!
Looks like the Islanders used the Shock and Awe line.
:)
-
ROFL! Good one Midnight.
Wlfgng, I'm not sure if I offended you regarding the upsidedown flag remark.
I was not defending the Booing of the anthem or trying to make it seem insignificant to you. All I wanted to do is point out that there have been mistakes made south of the 49th regarding my country and I hope that this does not tarnish the the way Americans look at us.
-
Torque is right funked, they were told not to drop till confirmation. The pilot dropped anyway. I'm not saying it wasn't an accident, it was. But when you ignore a direct order and it results in killing friendly troops, then some kind of action must be taken. You can't have pilots ignoring their orders. I don't think they will be severely punished, but they won't get off scott free either.
I agree, I would have walked off the ice.
-
I heard the pilot resigned volunarily. He's pretty upset about what happened. I don't think you need to punish him, he is already punishing himself.
Why do you Canadians get upset so bad by that bombing incident? We're used to training accidents where we kill our own guys. When you use live ammo, mistakes happen. In the long run it's better because they men are used to firing live ammo.
That was why the Canadians were out shooting at night in the first place. I beleave the story said that was one of the few times they actually got to fire real bullets because Canadian military is so undefunded they cannot afford lots of target practice. Bullets cost money.
-
First of all...it's not "you Canadians". I would say the majority of us believe that was an accident and NOT murder. Please don't lump me into that "You Canadians" category.
As for the last part. Yup we are underfunded. About once a year a reservist pops off a can of real ammo. I'm not sure about the Reg force guys. Our liberal goverment (the one NOT supporting the war) is to blame.

Murder is too strong, thats just not right. It was clearly a mistake, and I think the pilots attacked too quickly, Im happy enough to let the USAF decide the final action with the personell involved.
As for Canada, lets remember it is our troops in Afghanistan too, and they saw action there with US forces, so remember that when you slam us Major Hans.
Btw, I doubt the reaction of US soldiers killed during training is a down in the USA? Im sure the folks involved get just as upset over incidents that cost lives (and are held to account). You trivialise it by your comments.
As for the booing. They should grow up and have some class, booing anybodys anthem at a hockey game is just low class.

A "war" actually was waged between two countries in South America a long time ago, with a soccer game being the last straw. Memory fails me which countries they were...I think Uruguay and Bolivia.
Anyway, tension had been building up for quite some time concerning the basic necessities of life...and one of these was toilet paper . Booing at the soccer game quickly turned into a riot, and the beginning of the "war."
Several days later, a bomber appeared over one of the countries. Think it was a B-26 or another WWII era bomber. They proceeded to bomb targets with rolls of toilet paper, thus ending the war, for the time being...at least until the next soccer game. This war was known as the "Toilet Paper War."
I tried to look this up on the Internet, but I wouldn't know where to start. I only remember hearing about this passingly many years ago. Do any of you know anything about this "war", what it was about, and even whether it really happened, or why?
Just urban legend or actual history?

Do you mean the "Soccer War" between Honduras and El Salvador?
Do a search of "Soccer War"

Thank you Monk.
This must be the one I'm thinking about. Thank you Monk for you reply.:)

I just read about it some where not to long ago.
I think they even used P47s.

How many of yas have ever been in a military airplane and been in a tense situation (threat of enemy action, aircraft malfunction, fuel/weather combo problem) and called the Command Post as prescribed by Doctrine, spelled out the problem quickly and accurately and got the famous answer:
"Stand By"
?
Ever heard the phrase "and the seconds seemed like hours"?
Unless you've been in a situation like that, I'd be a bit slow on the draw painting them as "murderers" or anything remotely close.
Those guys will be punished; they did screw up. However, what of punishing the Command and Control elements? Heard anything about that? It's pretty clear they weren't briefed on the Canadian activity and they should have been.
I suspect any punishment short of death and dismemberment will be insufficient for some Canadians. I understand that, too.
