Is peace simply the absence of war? Or is it something more?
-
More.
-
Much more.
-
Peace is the result of war.
-
Hopefully I'll get a little piece tonight.
-
The only way you will get a piece is if SOB comes to OK. :D
-
Hey now!...alright, maybe just a little. :D
SOB

Raub's an Okie? Oh cod ... lol ;)

I feel really insulted. I am currently transplanted here by good old Uncle Sugar. I thought that my correct usage of the English language and omission of any "ya'll" or "fixin" would have made that clear :)
-
Hell, skipper .... it's worse than I thought, ain't it? Raub's a yankee, I bet. Ya'll watch. He's fixin' to fess up.

though man strives for peace, he does not find it as he does not know how to or where to look for it ....
-
Naa I don't think Raub is a true Yankee. Uncle Sugar has moved him around to much to still have what little southern bloodlines he did have. He has been polluted by the great satan called north of the Mason/Dixon line. :D
-
Since mankind managed to rise up off all fours there has never been peace. There will eventually be peace once mankind has left the premises.
Until then be prepared, always to defend yourself.
-
Peace of mind is never a good thing. Why do so many people seek it? It's not the same as happiness.

Plenty of other species kill their own kind.
And in humans, war predates culture. I think natural selection is always going to result in the dominant species being one that can kick a little ass.
Think of the beginning of Kubrick's 2001. What's more peaceful, having a full belly and fresh water to drink and a little blood on your hands, or having none of the above?

No... Peace is the absence of WMD.
Er... wait a minute...
-
And what was the rectangle object?
My God, it's full of stars.

Peace is the bull**** reason for some people to go to war when it's not the last option.
-
That reminds me of the Richard Pryor movie, where he jumped over the fence and was confronted by two vicious Doberman Pincers. While the Dobermans growled, Pryor was saying, "Golly-geen, I'm in trouble. Howbout some nice doggie bones..."more growling and bearing of teeth.
They get ready to attack, and Pryor says, "What do you want. Suck your dick?"
The Dobermans sit down and get real friendly and start licking.
You'd have to see the movie to think it's funny, but Pryor is always cool, no matter what.

Btw, I used to live next door to two giant English Dobermans. They would come over to the fence and put their paws on my shoulders. They must have been six feet tall standing up. They were the friendliest dogs I've ever seen. They were two big giant friendly, licking dogs. They wouldn't have been good guard dogs.

peace is not the absence of war.
peace is the ability to defend oneself with enough firepower to convince everyone to not even THINK about jerkin yer chain.
-
Is this a famous Canadian quote? Because it's fitting if it is. Makes no sense whatsoever, eh?

Qui deserat pacum, preparat bellum
He who desires peace, prepare for war.

Peace is the dream of the wise.
War is the history of man.

War is fun if only enemies die, much like stockcar racing :D

America was threatened by Iraq in no way , it was just plain ridiculous, it's a classic 'Angriffskrieg'

Germans love protesting everyone else's wars. It's their main form of recreation when they're not trying to take over Europe. :D

Amen, intellectualism and civility are noble and good ideals that we should never ceace to strive for, however make no mistake it is by way of the club that we protect these ideals . Force and brutality are what make the planets go 'round and the trees grow, we write laws and draft constitutions, but mother nature pays no heed to ink and paper, and try as we might we will never remove ourselfs from her world . It is, was and ever will be the law of the jungle that ultimately governs, just be glad that the band of monkeys with the biggest sticks are the nice monkeys, and let's try to keep it that way .

Blitz you show your ignorance yet again.

It depends on who you ask. In a bird course I took called "the Roots of Conflict and Violence" they use the word violence to cover everything from physical to emotional or social harm. They listed 4 different types of violence. They then defined several types of peace based on what kinds of violence were present.
So, before you go to the trouble of arguing about peace/war, you should define your terms.
If you really want to know, I suggest you find a book about that stuff, or take a college/university course on it. Keep in mind that most of those books are written by obsesive pacifists, so you can expect that your views will conflict with theirs on several subjects, but that just makes things more intereting.
Books and courses will usually be listed under "Peace Studies". Unfortunatly, my school doesn't teach anything about "War Studies".

Blitz,
Until this post (and the thread that was locked), I was willing to give you some leeway concerning your comments. You are obviously very committed in your beliefs on war in general and specifically this war.
However, with this and other recent posts, you have lost my respect. You seem to confuse support for troops with war mongering. You seem to hate the US for not doing anything 20 years ago, and you hate the US for doing something now.
Please, feel free to continue hating the US. I will keep up the proud tradition of my grandfathers and great uncles and continue to hate Germany.
Thanks,
-Math

Atmsktr,
I just posed the question to see if there was any decent discussion left here on this board.
I wasn't let down by my squaddies.
I wasn't let down by most everyone else.

Peace is what comes automatically when locking down all the Mathmans of this world to a padded cell.

No need to hate Germany, no need to hate the USA.
I think its OK to exchange opinions but now its time to stop with sarcastic comments or personel abuses.
I stopped to discuss about this war cause things where getting out of hand. There are to many emotions regarding this issue. Blitz i would really suggest to stop posting these kind of comments. U gain nothing from it and u'll rather raise the hate vs. France, Germany, the anti war crowd than convince someone of ur opinion.

I hate the warmongers in the white house not american people who are victims of the biggest propaganda war ever seen in America.
You may aceppt your losses as nessasary, i deny that.
They are not nessasary, the entire war wasn't.
Mr. Bush ****ed it up politically
Every victim of this war is one too much.
I feel sorry for every american or english soldier that will die and although i don't like the arabs very much i feel sorry for anyone of them to die, too :(
Regards Blitz
This war is sick and will create even more hate in the moslim/arab world and in US

This wasn't meant as a disrespect for dead people.
It referes to the unbelievable CNN live shows from tanks running through Iraq .
This isn't a movie :(

Sorry Blitz, but once you take a dump, you can't put it back in. This even more the case when it is diarhea.

Peace is an illusion. Even with the absence of wars, you still will not have peace. With the absence of international aggression, you still will not have peace. With the whole world under control of one governing body, you will still not have peace.
Until you can seperate the billions of people on this planet onto their own individual planets with no mode of transportation between the them, you will not have peace.
If you believe otherwise, you simply have not been paying attention to the world we live in.
No matter how intelligent and learned humans become, they still can not seperate themselves from their most basic animal instincts.
