Title: anybody watched Riverworld?
Post by: udet on March 23, 2003, 10:20:05 AM
on SciFi..
The Riverworld Series is one of my favourite books, so naturally I was keen to watch the movie/tv-show. I give it a 7/10 in recreating the atmosphere of the book. They adapetd the story pretty well for the pilot, although, if they are really planning to make it a TV Show they could've kept more elements from the book. For instance, in the book the metals were very scarce, therefore the technolog was mostly stone-age, and the Riverboat appeared later, in the second book of the series.
The movies biggest failuire is in suggesting the diversity of cultures/eras that the book protrays so well. Sure, you've got people from various eras in the movie as well, but the book shows that in a more vivid manner.
Overall, the movie seems kind of rushed, missing some of the fine points the book made. But, I guess all movie adaptations are like that.
Please post your comments on the book/movie.

I enjoyed the books also. Your assesment on it seeming rushed is right on. Had the feeling that it was made more as a series pilot than a stand alone flick.

I think Kevin Smith's death had something to do with cancelling the series...then again, if they get a positive we might see a series after all. There's lots of potential for that, a long journey, new places, lots of historical figures.

Like I said, the movie was OK, but I think if I were the producer I would've done better :):):):)
Was surprised you could actually see some nudity....on TV...where is the world coming to? :D
