OK here the situation.
I have :
ASUS A7V8X - mobo
AMD 2200 xp
1 x 512 DDR 400 chip of ram
running Win XP pro
(rest is illrelivant)
I had a geforce 2 GTS 32mg card ran great was geting 85 FPS down to 19 FPS in Aces HIGH
I bought a ATI 9700 pro
Before istalling i uninstaalled all geforce drivers and ran DETDESTRYERS to eliminate any old nvidia crap.
then ran "regclean" to clean up my registry.
install the ATI 9700 pro and im getting worse FPS than i did with the GEFORCE 2.
So i got the Rage 3D tweak but thats still not helping!
What is it i need to do?
Maunally clean my registry ? if so of what?
whan i run the RAGE 3D HELP THING ITS telling me i have 2 video cards installed which i dont.
What am i missing or what do i need to redo?
any help would be greatly appreiciated!
SkUZZY am i limited by the CPU on this one? (can't be the Geforce 2 ran better than the ATI 9700)

You running the Catalyst 3.2 drivers? Did you install the ATI control panel?
I know someone who has that combination and they are running very well.
It's always a problem going from NVidia to ATI or vice-versa, although going from NVidia is usually a bit more tedious.
You might try re-installing DirectX as well. It has its own registration stuff, and that may be what is hurting you.
-
Boxboy do you get max 60fps with the Ati now? :)
-
Well im using the catalyst 3.2 drivers I installed them first!
Then installed the control panel. I then installed DX9. After seeing no change i installed the RAGE 3D tweak thing, still nothing
Then i ran the RAGE 3D trouble shooter and it was referencing the old Geforce 2 and the ATI 9700
I edited the registry to remove the line referencing the Geforce 2 card.
uninstalled the ATI stuff then reinstalled it. I havent reinstall DX 9 yet but ill try that today sometime(ya im at work till 6pm EST)
I have my bios set up so the AGP is running at 8X with an apature size of 256.
other than that im not sure what else can be happening
the card is currently optimized for preformance not quality, and im still only getting a rare max of 40-50 FPS (for a sec) averaging low 30's andf botteming out in the teens.
Im running 1024x786 32 bit @ 85 refresh
still confused

Isn't that asus board with a VIA chipset?
If it is, install the latest 4in1 drivers, that may fix your problems. You should do _easily_ 100fps in AH with that setup.
I get that with the gf3ti200 and xp1900 with your resolution.

Yes sir you are correct but the latest Via drivers have already been installed, Maybee i need to reinstall the AGP stuff?
-
Back up essential files, reformat, easiest way to solve 99% of computer problems. squealing with the registry is a dangerous game and you may have deleted some files you shouldnt have.
-
Thats true, but if I was him I'd try to reinstall 4in1, those gart drivers might make a world of difference. If they're not setup right at the moment I mean.
-
Well i ran home at lunch and downloaded +installed the latest Via 4-1 combo the reinstalled direct X9 i was in a hurry but fired up AH just for a quick peak! i was getting 70 FPS in the tower 60 FPS in the hanger and 40-50 on the runway. Seems like it might have helped a little but im not sure till i get a real chance to F-with it.
Do these Numbers sound like what i sould be expecting?
Skuzzy what kind FPS does your friend get using this set up?
TY guys

@1600x1200 resolution, 32 bit using 4xfsaa, he gets about 100 in the tower.
I get about 130, but my system is a tad faster.
That's the other thing. What resolution you running at and do you have V-Sync enabled?
The 9700Pro runs better at higher resolutions than lower ones. Sounds odd, I know, but the beast likes punishment.
-
Im running 1024x786 32 bit @ 85 refresh
and Vsync is set to application pref.
-
Crank up the resolution and see what happens, or turn up the FSAA to at least 4x...6x is best at lower resolutions.
-
Well skuzzy i wasnt getting anything better than what i had.
At one point i got so pissed i deleted all video setting out of the registry and started over installed it all one thing at a time and im still stuck right where ive been.
I did try crancking up the resolution but got nothing and stuff is too small to read for my non-glasses wearing ass............lol
sad part is my hard rive is running at UDMA 66 not higher could this be a limiting factor?
IM planing on buying one of the new W.D. SATA 10,000 rpm - bad boys when i can findon online then do a fresh reistall of everything.
I can understand why after i removed then deleted EVERYthing Nvidia possible (i went into the registry after i tryind the other stuff - found more - dumped it all) re-removed then reinstelled drivers, control panel, then DX9 ......same thing!
I have too much on my hard drive to dump right now even thought i have a 2nd 4 gig drive(lol is a udma 33) to back up my main drive.
if i knew what to look for and take out i could but im just "a dumb middle aged white man hacking his way into cyber space"

Is there any IRQ sharing going on in that system? Start->Programs->Acessories->System Tools->System Information
and expand the Hardware list then select IRQ.
-
Well skuzzy i dont think so but ill look into it.
Last night after my update ......hehe i was messing with the registry deleting crap (mind you i was drinking) screwed stuff up the had to do a system restore.
But it did notice a lot of Nv things in the registry!
Now if i could only find that damn XP disc.
well i think its back to where it was but ill go look into the IRQ stuff at lunch.(1pm est)
-
LOL! Boxboy, it may just be time to say WTF! And reformat/reinstall WinXP ;)
My experience with it, is that XP is very finicky once something goes wrong, and its hard to get at all the hidden settings and fix them. Win2k wasn't like that, so I'm not sure why WinXP is that way. A royal pain in the hind quarters.
-
LOL verm i know but im gonna wait till i get my new HD, and use my current one as back up.
But like i said i was able to kick it back to a restore date so i hopefully can go back in (sober of corse) and get it right this time.
As fare as reinstalling and reformatting i need to find my damn Win XP CD it some how got miss placed in my sheeite hole of a computer room! ~~~> never pays to be sloppy!
Skuzzy i had a Doc appointment today durring mu lunch so i couldnt go home but i will after i get out of work and report back on the IRQ issue around 7pm EST.
TY guys

Boxboy your HD speed has no effect in the fps you get in game. If you get a faster hd it will start faster, but after that its just the same.
If your fps stays over 60 at all times, it's good enough anyway and I wouldn't worry about it.
-
Saif i thought so but wasnt sure if it would be reading graphics info or sumthing.
Skuzzy i look into the IRQ stuff
It was sharing IRQ 11 with the sound card - so i moved the sound card but i still need to repair window today with my newly reaquired Win XP disc so once i get that fixed ill let ya know whats going on!
-
I dont know why, but for some reason I hated XP from the first second I saw it.. The feeling just gets stronger with time.
Completely opposite to what I experienced with W2k.
-
Sound and vide card sharing IRQ's is one of the worst IRQ sharings possible. Causes all kinds of maladies.
-
Well i got the sound card switched to a better slot.
Wipe C drive and been trying to reistell XP.
Since i can find my original disc i stole on from work , the problem its a Dell XP OS.
I installed it directly off the CDrom drive and now it keeps giving me different errors and BSOD's
I know its probably somthing imbedded in that damn Dell CD cause my system AINT NO DELL DUDE.
So i guess i need to find a straight up Copy of XP PRO.
-
Lol you better format that drive good once you get the clean XP.
I'd install W2k if I was you, however.

LOL thats probably why it didnt install cleanly.
If i only had a copy of 2000 i would!

Well after 10-15 tries reinstalling winXP
setting up all the drivers for the mobo and basic stuff
then istalling for the ATI9700 using the and catalyst 3.2 drivers
I can to the conclusion that it wont work!
After 3 or so reboot the ATI stuff crashed the system everytime making me randomly reboot then finally not boot at all!
I pulled the card slipped in my Gforce 2 reinstalled and every thing is fine.
I have no idea what the problem is ?
any one else have this problem?
-
ok so i get balsy and think now that every thing is set up i'll try to install it (AYI9700) unistall the geforce then pulg in the ati boot up ...........
1st thing i notice i lost all sound
then try to istaqqll the drivers and it wont let me saying that sum "call failed"
then i goto device manager and nothing shows up!
And i can add any new hard ware!
pull the card put Geforece 2 back in , goto system restore and everything is Fine agian
ATI SUCK

wait a sec !!!! you say AMD XP 2200 ? is it the 0.18 micron ????
no way , i tryed to turn my Ati 9700 pro with xp 2100 with quality poversuply but no way, imagine even when upgradet to Antec 550 W true power , no way to turn it corectly ,
well then i instaled a xp 2400 multiplied to turn 2600 at 13 micron and everithing FINE
so , at first try change if you can the CPU !!!! 18 micron suxx
about your extreme low frame rate , seems your AGP bus have some problems ! check Twice your damn seting in Bios !!!!!!!
-
ahm Asus Avx8 ? why not N for n force ? anyway tray to set Agp bus 4X and no more !!! and try some cheap 13 micron XP CPU , you will see it works fine
-
Sounds strange to me... I ran 4200 all ran fine... upgradedd to 9700 and ran great on both a AMD2000 and a 2800...... don't think thats the problem..... corrupt drivers maybe...
-
Boxboy didn't tell if he got a 'clean' copy or not.
It's essential that the OS is not from any brand computer, they have made several modifications which assure the cd won't work in any other brand setup.
Get a normal copy of W2k SP2 or XP SP1, format c: and reinstall the OS. If the 9700 is still not working, you have a hardware problem.
-
I got a clean purchased OEM copy of XP pRO
-
The 9700pro eats a lot of current.. Your power supply might cave in under the load. You did connect the extra power cable to the card? :)
-
Power is fine.
now im gettting BSOD
with an error code of:
0x0000008E
PCC_PFW STS
-
another thingy , get some soft that can monitor your PSU voltages under load , if you see big spikes on 3.3 and 5 and 12 V then verify if the thermal compoud dont lay over the contact bridges on CPU < sometime it hapening and hapened to me ;) >
and just for sure , please borow somewhere a 13 micron XP CPU , and if is not change then only MB , or Video Card defect can be
-
full Format then XP
Load CAT 3.2 and Dx 9.0a
Shouldnt have a prob unless you have faulty hardware. Im running 350 watt power supply easily and look at all the crap I have going.
-
Sun should i use the windows partition format? or use the western digital formater?
-
When you boot from the XP disc it will ask you to delete all partitions then after that what kind of formatyou want. Do the "Full" format. I forgot exactly what it was called. There are two formatting options quick format and a full.
If they gives you problems. Then use the western digital app or wipe.exe. I think that will work on all HDD.

If you don't connect the auxiliary power connector, the ATI card won't let you boot your system.
-
Well every thing is running fine now I dont know what i did but its all hooked up and screaming fast! The only thing i need to know now is how to go in an change the Product code in Win XP!
Ty for all your help guys!
