Title: A request regarding the flying of the flag.
Post by: Karnak on March 24, 2003, 12:07:21 AM
I know that many of you are flying the flag of the USA, some from your vehicles.  Please place the flag inside your car or truck rather than fly it outside from the antena or a jury-rigged pole.  If you feel that you must fly it outside your vehicle, please make sure it is firmly attached.

The reason I bring this up is that today while I was driving along the freeway I saw an American flag laying in the middle of the freeway being run over by passing automobiles.  The flag was attached to a jury rigged pole.

I did not care to see the casual disrespect to the flag that resulted from this unknown person's clumsy attempt to fly the flag outside of their car.  I know this wasn't the person's intention, but seeing the flag laying forlorn in the middle of a busy freeway and being run over by passing vehicles pissed me off a bit.  I can understand somebody intentionally destroying the flag, but casually leading to destruction of the flag is somehow worse.  Its like the person doing so doesn't really care one way or the other.  Please take care to fly your flag(s) responsibly and respectfully.

Thanks.

(Be aware that flags with attachments ment to be held in place by the door or window are also not reliable.)

I really can't fault anyone for being patriotic, but some folks go too far. There's some idiot running around town with what must be a 3x5 foot flag flying from a 6 foot antenna that's mounted on the roof of his primer gray old assed Datsun 240z. Makes me cringe everytime I see it.

it's not too hard to pick out the diffence between 'look at me' and 'respect the flag' displays.

I don't fly flags on my car or with stickers or anything else. Seeing frayed flags and faded stickers on cars after 9/11 was enough...even now it still pisses me off.

My parents fly a flag outside our house on a flagpole suspended from the house, just like my grandfather (the Marine)...and we make sure we follow the rules regarding it. (Like in at sundown, stored properly, etc.)

YOu're right, Hang...unfortunatly...

I have been wanting to put a small flag decal on the inside of my cars rear window for some time, but I've been debating these same issues if I should or not.

I put a flag sticker in each of the rear passenger windows of my car...did the same in my Tahoe.  Anyone who has a problem with my stickers because they are stickers needs to get over it.

Good post!

Everymorning about 8:00 AM the flag goes out. Checked on during the day to insure the wind hasn't wrapped it around staff.

Every night I bring it in along with a prayer for those who have sworn to protect what it stands for.

Respect in this area is a SERIOUSG issue.

FWIW..
"The flag should not be draped over the hood, top  or sides of a vehicle. When the flag is flown on a motor car it is to be attached to a solid staff to the right front fender area as viewed from the drivers seat.  When the vehicle is unattended the flag is to be in-cased in a sheath to protect it from weather and dirt".

"When any US flag has deteriated to such a state that it is no longer a fitting emblem for display, it is to be compleately distroyed in a dignified way, preferalby by burning. It must not be viewed or reconized as a flag after destruction"

I too saw a flag in the middle of the road that had fallen off someone's car...  I pulled over and picked it up. Some things I just can't bear to see.

I've got the best set up for flying th flag on my car...

It's a Magnetic Flag, about 12" by 8".

Just like a big refrigerator magnet, and it sits real nice on the back of my Chevy.

You may be able to pick on of these up on E-bay. I have to ask my wife where she got it.

It was truely sad several months after 9/11 to see so many flags flying in tatters on cars and trucks. I could not count how many I say so destroyed by the high speed driving that people were doing with the flag attached.

What is even worse about the whole thing is the extremely poor quality flags that the retail stores were selling so that they could make a buck off of the 'patriotic' Americans. Many stores were selling the cheap silk-screened flags bulk cut from large print rolls. The edges remained un-stitched or sealed in any way and then cheaply stapled to a piece of dowl. Most of those flags, 'Made in China' would last about 5 minutes on a car's antenna before they became shredded.

I had a bunch of flag display and care brochures that I would leave under the wipers of cars that had old flags on them, in hopes the owner would read it and realize that they should retire the flag they were 'flying'. <-- I had to revert to that after almost being arrested for theaft when I was caught removing such flags from people's cars at a local mall.

America is a land of Trends. Too bad flying a flag is a trend that most people seem to neglect and only do part of. The latest trend is hanging flags on Chain-link fences on highway overpasses. Unfortunately, those flags wind up caught in the links and get torn and splashed with dirty road water. :(

Distraught

That was my impulse as well, but I was at work with a very tight schedule to keep and the flag was in the middle of a five lane freeway that was very busy.  As much as I disliked seeing it there, it wasn't worth dying over.

But it was enough to make me comment here about it.

Thanks for the comments guys.
