Title: Second Party Aircraft Development
Post by: Holder3 on March 24, 2003, 03:01:58 PM
Because I am interested in historical gameplay I would like to see more early war aircraft for improved early-war matchups. Right now only the Brits and Germans have a decent early war plane set, and this is still limited (no He-111/Ju-52/Blenheim/Wellington).

Why were the American Volunteer Group so successful against the Japanese? Because the Japanese were flying the A5M Claude fighter, for the most part. Not too many zekes in the air in those days. At present, we can't model these fights accurately because we don't have the aircraft. We can't do the early years of the Russo-German conflict, or the Battle of France and can barely manage the first year in the desert war.

There is the desire by many to fly the "hotrods" the P-51s and Fw-190s. But, in an historical matchup the excitement is just as high if there are two aircraft of nearly equal abilities, duking it out. P-40bs vs A5Ms, Mig-3s against Bf-109E and Fs, Hurricane Is against He-111s. The list is long, but with effort the major gaps could be filled in. :D

Now this is likely to be a lot of work, so I recommend, if possible, to include the ability for second-party aircraft development. This can be overseen by a plane development team (like terrains are now). There are LOTS of highly skilled people who would do this (look at the effort that still goes into Red Baron III). Some games have managed this quite well, in particular IL2 and IL2 Forgotten Battles. Easy skinning, and a developing plane set.
