Post by: funkedup on March 25, 2003, 01:09:39 PM
You go into your favorite bar.
And a bunch of noisy protestors walk in and start chanting anti-war and anti-American slogans.  Some of them are joking and laughing about the deaths of American troops.  Others are gleefully discussing weapons Saddam can use against American troops.
Wouldn't you expect the bartender to ask them to leave?
If the bartender did nothing, would you continue to spend money in that bar?

Imagine this:

Only popular opinions are allowed.  The United States of America does not care for any freedom of expression, only proscribed views are tolerated.

Is that the country you want, Funked?

Fear drives this IMO:

"Imagine this:

Only popular opinions are allowed. The United States of America does not care for any freedom of expression, only proscribed views are tolerated.

Is that the country you want, Funked?"

---

one has to draw the line somewhere.
Your view touts only the extremes.

Unfortunately, the world isn't as black and white as you'd have us believe.  So... let every one in America say and do whatever they like?   I think not.

There has to be a consensus on acceptable behavior. not by the government, but by the people.
Otherwise why have laws, police, etc?

An then you wake up one day and say "What the heck was that? How come we got bombed all of a sudden!".

Whether they right or wrong, they do not disappear if you refuse to listen to them. It pays to know what opposition thinks of only to be ready for them.

Government and media are not likely to warn you untill it's too late, so shut your eyes at your peril.

P.S. Practically, I agree - a proprieetor can ban any speech. Here, tehy gave us an "ignore" button. Of you can just not read their posts. Unlike sound of a conversation, their typing does not affect you untill you choose to read it.

BGBMAW, what does cheering on child molesters have to do with having different opinions on global policy?  Do you require clarification as to the difference between the two?

good point miko but what does that have to do with this thread?

I would rather know what my adversaries think than not. Even if I have to tolerate some elevated blood pressure and white knuckles...

I do browse some "enemy" sites but they "preach to the choire", so to speak. There are no discussions there and ideas are not presented for an "average" american. When those people come here with their views, I gain valuable insight.

Funkedup should just consider it a working "undercover" as a spy in enemy territory. If we send a CIA operative to Baghdad and he listens to Hussein speak ill of america and slaps him in the face, would it be good? Not really.
Keep your cool, use a chance to convert someone to our side, study their methods otherwise. You do not want to learn that there is a major influence in US when your child comes back from college all brainwashed with the new name like "Abdoul", waving the red flag and eating tofu. :)

Actually, I think all you'd need to do is engage them in rational discussion.

Calmly challenge their views, put forth your own calm, well-reasoned and supported opinion and wait.

Because they'll resort to violence first (as we've seen all around the country) and then you're merely defending yourself when you mop the deck with them.

Global {Policy??

They arer cheerirng on the Deatsh of the People who put there lives for you...who dont know 1 thing about you...They (soldiers) are protecting you blindly...I mean they have no idea who you are or what you do  they trust that you are worth it.

Like a child trusts adults..Who thinks they woudl not hurt them...

Soldiers beleive the majority of us back them..So when we say ..we wish you were dead is BS...ROLL SKULLS TIME...

This is what is rigth..what is wrong...FUK your Politicly Correct BS

is that clear?

So..will you let some guys in aa bar talk about the 6 yr Old girl they have been raping & killed the last week??

For me ..this is the same as cheering on Torture-murder of the people  fighting for us...

So..BEWARE..If any of you are in Public ..Cheering this stuff...and I  or many others are around...You will get to use Medicare,,and thank me cause i pay taxes and i will pay for your sticthes..It will be worth it

Well I'll take this question at face value.

The bar is a private establishment.  Freedom of speech is not an issue, they should be able to kick anybody out for whatever reasons they want.  If someone is behaving "disruptively" (my opinion of disruptive of course), then it interferes with my enjoyment of the bar.

If the bar doesn't want to stop the disruptive behavior, then I would be inclined to complain to the management:  "If you want my business then you won't tolerate their behavior".  If I didn't really like the bar that much, then I would probably just leave and never go back.

Hooligan: If the bar doesn't want to stop the disruptive behavior...

Noise is disruptive. A guy getting in your face is disruptive.

A typed text that you have to click on, scroll and read in order to absorb is not disruptive. You go to a newsstand and buy your newsspaper. The other ones do not affect you. Same here.

Discussions are one thing but laughing about our dead troops is another.

I would politely ask them to keep those comments to themselfs and if they didn't I would show them the error in their decision.

I'm all for open discussions but there is always that line which should never be crossed in public.

I don't mean to say I support the losers that want US people (military or civillian) to die.. hell my son is over there for Christ's sake.

In fact, having my kid over there, I'm even more keen to get the 'real' story, instead of the single-minded view CNN keeps giving.

As for the 'bar' thing (topic of this thread)..

Ya know "shouting someone" down for saying bull**** is just as "free" speech as any idiot climbing on to his soap box to spew forth some nonsense.

You can say what ever you want but no one has to listen to you or allow you to be "heard".

If you throw out a bull**** opinion dont get pissed when some when calls you on it.

All "opinions" arent of equal value in "all" discussions.

The government in how it applies our laws and rights is obligated to protect your ability to physically speak but the Government and the rights it affords isnt there to ensure you get heard.

So if you step into the "public square" and climb to your soap and set out to lecture the rest us then be thick skinned enough and prepared to be "bashed in the mouth"; verbally ofcourse.

Do the same thing on private property dont get surprised  if you're told to stfu and get out. And if you choose not to leave then be prepared to get tossed.

"Only popular opinions are allowed."

Not true

"The united States of America does not care for any freedom of expression, only proscribed views are tolerated."

The USA is made of freedom of expression. But the cost of freedom is accepting the concequences of your actions. If you want to run for public office and use the argument that the general public is dumb, so they need a smart guy like you to lead them, you reap the consequences.
If you take advantage of your freedom of speech/expression to bash the president of the United States, and you happen to be an entertainment professional, and your audience happens to have different views than you do, then be prepared to accept the consequences. You are always free to say what you want in this country, but freedom of speech does not give you freedom to escape the freedoms that every other citizen in this country, of the world, is born with.

Don't misinterpret what I said.

I really would engage them in a calm rational discussion. As MT said, let'em talk; the stupid shines right on through. We've all seen it here in the O-Club many times.

Sometimes, Funked's imaginary type folks even finally see their own stupidity if you give them the chance. Not often, but it does happen.

However, I've also found that calm, rational discussion can often bring out the worst in those that are unable to form rational thought and carry on a polite debate. Thus, it ofter does move them to violence as they can't express themselves any other way.

So, bearing that in mind, you have to be ready for them to explode on you. And, as I said, you're cleared in hot if you're willing to let them throw the first punch.

Title: The Paradox of Our Time in History
Post by: weazel on March 25, 2003, 10:50:54 PM
Gee Hangtime...first you want me shot and now burned out?

You need some George Carlin in your life.

Quote
The paradox of our time in history is that....

We have taller buildings but shorter tempers, wider freeways, but narrower viewpoints.

We spend more, but have less.

We buy more, but enjoy less.

We have bigger houses and smaller families, more conveniences, but less time.

We have more degrees but less sense, more knowledge, but less judgment, more experts, yet more problems, more medicine, but less wellness.

We drink too much, smoke too much, spend too recklessly, laugh too little, drive too fast, get too angry, stay up too late, get up too tired, read too little, watch TV too much, and pray too seldom.

We have multiplied our possessions, but reduced our values.

We talk too much, love too seldom, and hate too often

We've learned how to make a living, but not a life.

We've added years to life not life to years.

We've been all the way to the moon and back, but have trouble crossing the street to meet a new neighbor.

We conquered outer space but not inner space.

We've done larger things, but not better things.

We've cleaned up the air, but polluted the soul.

We've conquered the atom, but not our prejudice.

We write more, but learn less. We plan more, but accomplish less.

We've learned to rush, but not to wait.

We build more computers to hold more information, to produce more copies than ever, but we communicate less and less.

These are the times of fast foods and slow digestion, big men and small character, steep profits and shallow relationships.

These are the days of two incomes but more divorce, fancier houses, but broken homes.

These are days of quick trips, disposable diapers, throwaway morality, one night stands, overweight bodies, and pills that do everything from cheer, to quiet, to kill.

It is a time when there is much in the showroom window and nothing in the stockroom.

A time when technology can bring this letter to you, and a time when you can choose either to share this insight, or to just hit delete.

Remember, spend some time with your loved ones, because they are not going to be around forever.

Remember, say a kind word to someone who looks up to you in awe, because that little person soon will grow up and leave your side.

Remember, to give a warm hug to the one next to you, because that is the only treasure you can give with your heart and it doesn't cost a cent.

Remember, to say, "I love you" to your partner and your loved ones, but most of all mean it.

A kiss and an embrace will mend hurt when it comes from deep inside of you.

Remember to hold hands and cherish the moment for someday that person will not be there again.

Give time to love, give time to speak and give time to share the precious thoughts in your mind.

To all my friends in my life, thanks for being there.

~George Carlin~

There now.....don't you feel all warm and fuzzy?  :D

Lazerus, blow me.... your too uptight to recognize humor.
