There weren't many wing damage pictures...
Only conclusion to that is that B-17 didn't like wing damage and therefore dropped behind the lines and no pictures. (http://bbs.hitechcreations.com/smf/Smileys/default/wink.gif)

Wrong Fishu, look at the nose pics again, one had it's snout removed by 88 mm shell it says. I was forced to land at another field, not home base however. Oh, look, I posted before looking at all the pics, and there is another one listed as hit by an 88mm shell in the 'nose section'.

I dont believe it was *direct* hit.
You see that those damages were usually caused by the blast effect of 88mm.
So no direct hit..

I've seen a photo of a P-47 that was directly hit by an 88mm, and it landed safely in one piece. (http://bbs.hitechcreations.com/smf/Smileys/default/biggrin.gif)

There was also photo of B17 which had direct hit of 88mm... but that 88mm was dud (http://bbs.hitechcreations.com/smf/Smileys/default/smile.gif)

This B-17 took a direct flak hit in the waist over Debrecen, Hungary which killed three crewmen and wounded two others. Threatening to come apart in mid-air the pilot nursed it home to a safe landing, but the weakened fuselage collapsed on touchdown.

Unbelievable, We've all heard the B17 stories, but I haven't seen this many horrific photographs. Gives a newfound respect let me tell you.
This ones pretty impressive. Enemy fighter collided with it and tore off the entire left horizontal stabilizer, almost tore the fuselage in half...

Heres a couple pics I took a couple months ago of the B17 "Yankee Lady" at an airshow, I tried to emphasize the seriousness to my 2 boys, of what these planes had participated in 53 or so years ago...

Amazing how many of those photo's had captions indicating direct hits with 88mm shells. I imagine quite a few of those captions were based on interviews with the actual crew members who were there. But of course fishu knows better and tells all.
Martin Caidin was known for detailed and intensive review of material used in his books. He was a stickler for accuracy and research. Quite a few of those photo's are traced to his publication.

Everytime I see combat damage of planes, I wonder how they ever returned home. Especially the B17F that had the fighter run through it. Imagine sitting in that tail turret and actually hearing the crunching/tearing of steel(?) spars and aluminum skin only feet behind you. Or being those waist gunners and looking to your left/right to see the bottom of a Nazi fighter's left(I assume) wing ripping through the fuselage of your only ride back home a matter of inches away from you.
I'm glad Aces High isn't reality!
