That an animated avatar consumes several times more bandwidth that a plain picture - for example 15564 bytes for Dowding's 50x37 picture compared to about 1700 bytes for a still 50x50 one.
Come on, guys - a rippling effect will not make anyone confuse a picture on a screen with silk. And most would recognise a Union Jack or Stars and Stripes without flashy effects.
It really does not bother me at all that some of you behave like small girls who got carried away with glitter, and the flickering barely distracts me from reading the text but it just might lead to some bandwidth-related restrictions in the future on the part of HTC.

So... technically speaking...
Your avatar does consume bandwidth and by eliminating it, you too could avoid being someone who manages to "behave like a small girl who got carried away with glitter".
Technically speaking...
You could save even more bandwidth by not posting at all.
Time to show everyone exactly where you stand Miko. Walk the walk.

we seem to have fairly small core of posters, so once the initial bandwidth is used and these images are cached locally it shouldn't be a problem.
Also with the stoppage in hosted photo's (now they can be linked only -- using someone else'd bandwidth) there is probably more (bandwidth) to go around.
If it is a problem, I'm sure Skuzzy will come in here and romp on us. ;)
-
OMG 15564 bytes!!! Bandwidth hogs!!! :D
-
MiniD - that is not what I said.
The information imparted by most of the the animations here compared to the still pictures is nill, while the cost is substantial.
For a guy using "technically speaking" twise in one post, you should have been able to tell the difference between style and substance.
My avatar is 1729 bytes and it contains way more info about me than most 15,000+ avatars here contain about their owners.
Also, if you want save bandwidth on my posts, just add me to your ignore list - then the server would not send my posts to your computer, genius.

Don't look at me, I nicked it from Swoop.
Anyway, this thread is obviously, even to a casual observer, an anti-British thread.
Kneel before the Union Flag, you cowardly peasant!

Oh - so we now have a stoppage of hosted photos? Could it be realated to enabling of avatars? I'd rather see the original photos posted here and upload my own - having no place to host them - and modest avatars than huge flickering avatars and no photos.
miko
-
Miko the only legible part is the confederate flag. Are you a Ukrainian Rebel or something? :D
-
Miko... you drew a line and insulted people on the other side of it. You continue to do so.
MiniD
-
ROFLMAO, Avatar wars.
-
Yes, they changed both of those settings at the same time.
and yes that would look like they are related.
And yep they own this forum so we get what they give us.
And if you need to have a photo hosted, speak up. There are places where you can freely host one or someone around here will probably host one for you.

^^ the annoucement.

Are we to assume youre a racist, yankee hating, disgruntled Southerner who happened to be relocated to New York and is currently taking out Rebel frustrations on the general population of the AH BBS because its unbearable to be living under the iron curtain of the northern imperialist states? ;)
-
I have no idea what those wierd squiggly things are at the top of that flag.
And yes I'm a large hairy orange thing with a stubbly butthead..
but then again everyone already knew that about me.

i have a state of the art stealth avatar

ROFL!!!!!!
the only thing you missed was his KKK membership application.

if you dont like avatars just set it so you cant see them
of course 5000 more bytes or whatever is not to much (even if you count in all 1000 or so people with them) in anycase a 50*50 1174 byte (or whatever) takes up less badwidth than a 1024*768 high colour screenshot
as for the flag thing i think its a bit over done...if you need a picture of your flag to ensure in your mind that your american and your proud i think something is wrong...even more so if it has a ripple effect
(yes i realise i have a canadian flag as mine but thats juist temporary until i can scan a penny...)
-
Kanth: I have no idea what those wierd squiggly things are at the top of that flag.
funkedup: Miko the only legible part is the confederate flag. Are you a Ukrainian Rebel or something? :D
The top part of my avatar is a cuneiform inscription "Amagi"- the earliest-known written appearance of the word "freedom", or "liberty." It is taken from a clay document written about 2300 B.C. in the Sumerian city-state of Lagash.
It is used by some libertarians as a logo.
Hopefully this larger image links successfully - I can't upload one. It is more legible but I doubt anyone will be able to read it anyway.
The bottom part is a banner under which some americans attempted to stand up for their own freedom and self-determination for the last time.

Wouldn't you say this avatar rather accurately describes my political leanings, brilliance, erudition and low moral character? ;)
miko
-
Vort you're losing it bro ;)
as for the flag thing i think its a bit over done...if you need a picture of your flag to ensure in your mind that your american and your proud i think something is wrong...even more so if it has a ripple effect
that's not why we fly flags... it's simply a symbol of allegiance to a country

vorticon: if you dont like avatars just set it so you cant see them
But I do! I just want to point out that any good idea could be perverted to absurdity...
miko

"The bottom part is a banner under which some americans attempted to stand up for their own freedom and self-determination for the last time."
*negroes excepted
Seriously how can you talk about freedom and liberty when you also display a confederate flag - but then again I know you managed to convince yourself that the south had no slaves or was about to free them all and that the war had nothing to do with slavery.
-

Hhehehhehhe... how ironic, considering....

GRUNHERZ: Seriously how can you talk about freedom and liberty when you also display a confederate flag...
I did not say "angels" or "saints" but "some americans". The 600,000 of volunteers of the Confederate Army could not have possibly been slave-owners - there were less than 200,000 of those in the whole Confederacy and not every single slave-owner served in the army.
Slavery was not in the economic interests of those non-slave owning whites.
convince yourself that the south had no slaves or was about to free them all and that the war had nothing to do with slavery.
Not "about" but "eventually" - just like Northern states and other countries did. And some people who stood under that flag might have been fighting for slavery, for all I know - but most were not.
There were plenty of abolitionists and even a few blacks among confederate soldiers. Besides, when the South secceded, it only had 7 slave states while North still had 8.
And some of the "free" states did have slavery not that long before and got rid of it without war - as the South would have done.
The legend that "Stars and Bars" stood for slavery is a recent (1970?) invention. It did not - at least for most people. No more than "Stars and Stripes" stood for slavery in slave-owning USA of Washington.
It does not represent slavery but rather self-determination and federalism to me. I know my ancestors for the last few hundred years and they did not own slaves - which some of you cannot claim.
As to what motivation you want to attribute to me despite all evidence in order to "attack a strawmen" - it's entirely your business.

i have a ripply avatar, am i bad?
-
5,315 - you are 1/3 of a girly Dowding is :D
miko
-
OK miko.. so its getting a little clearer. 5k is alright, but 15k isn't. Could you just be more specific and give an exact avatar size people should try to stay under in order to avoid your scorn?
MiniD
-
just in response to miko2d, I made my avatar animated. pretty cool, eh? real guncam footage from WW2
(shooting down an Ar234)
-
Mini D: OK miko.. so its getting a little clearer. 5k is alright, but 15k isn't. Could you just be more specific and give an exact avatar size people should try to stay under in order to avoid your scorn?
Why do you care about my scorn? I do not intend to make people "conserve" and it's not my board anyway to police.
I just pointed out an opportunity to conserve and to be considerate for those willing to do so. Many people had no idea about the sizes of their avatars or their effect on bandwidth.
Udet: I made my avatar animated. pretty cool, eh? real guncam footage from WW2
Udet - whatever I think about artistic virtues of your avatar (OK, it's cool, I admit it), it's increased size is due to it's content, not style.
miko
-
Yes, but not because of your avatar. :)

Nah miko...
I know what you think you did. You think you said "Could we keep the avatars small". Except, what you typed was "Why do idiots need large avatars".
Gonna call you on it every time you bring it up miko.
MiniD
-
As far as Im concerned your all horrible people and are going straight into the firey chasm of Hell.
NO AVATARS FOR OIL!!!

I typed that? I typed "Why do idiots need large avatars"? Granted, I wanted to call you an idiot for not realising you can set my posts on ignore yourself, but I suppressed even that urge.
Could I call you on that, you liar?
miko
-
I am girly because I have a ripling flag?
At least it's the flag of an existing nation, not some abstract projection of your opinions onto an anachronistic, non-existant 'nation'.
Tell me, are the doors of your car welded shut? Do you have an interesting car-horn sound? ;)
-
You tell him Dowd. It's our flag and we're proud of it.
-
Dowding: I am girly because I have a ripling flag?
Obviously, "girly" was a good-humored joke. I specifically selected brit - a member of a nation famous for their sense of humor but I guess I over-generalised.
So don't get you panti... Er, never mind. I greatly admire you valorous brits and your flag - ripling or not. :)
miko
-
Miko.... now you are being beligerent. I paraphrased both aspects. The exact quote:
It really does not bother me at all that some of you behave like small girls who got carried away with glitter
Now... do you really want to continue calling people names miko? Did you really need to start this thread in the first place?
MiniD
-
I'm getting my panties in a wad? I'm not the one with anal obsession with the size of avatars on some BBS.
And you still haven't answered my question about your car doors, Johnny Reb. ;)
BTW - Thank you Mr. Swoop.
-
You tell him Dowd. It's our flag and we're proud of it
and im proud of my Bart Mooning avatar :D
-
Mini D: now you are being beligerent. I paraphrased both aspects. The exact quote "that some of you behave like small girls who got carried away with glitter"
Oh, you just paraphrased an obvious and often-used joke (make a search on that word here) into an open insult? That's all?
miko
-
Miko,
Say whatever you want now. There wasn't much humor expressed in your initial post. You were (and are still) insulting people based on the size of the avatar they post. You even manage to throw in a content critisism.
Take a look at my avatar miko. It fits perfectly when reading your posts.
MiniD
-
fight! fight! fight!:D
-
how do I get a picture in my signature? all it gives me is the link. I have enabled "show img in signature"in user options.
-
Skuzzy, please close this thread. It's wasting valuable bandwidth.
-
please refrain from using punctuation as it too uses too much bandwidth
-
Mini D: Take a look at my avatar miko. It fits perfectly when reading your posts.
I don't dare flatter myself that you made that avatar just because of me, so I assume you are one of those nitpicky peope who look for imaginary offences everywhere and manage to get pissed off by anyone and everyone...
I believe there are efficient medications for that.
miko
-
Immaginary? LOL! Noticed you couldn't help but throw in some more namecalling. Its OK.. you can say you were just joking if someone calls you on it.
MiniD
-
Oh, yeah - I would really get worked up and start offending people by calling them idiots (by using word girlie - how perceptive of you) for such a trifle as a bandwidth-wasting avatar...
I wish it was the biggest of my worries.
If I did intend to offend anyone here, why the heck would I then try to deny it by turning it into a joke?
Wouldn't it spoil the whole effect of the offense? What's the fun in that kind of retracted "offense"?
If I offend anyone intentionally, I mean it and stand by it. If I find I was mistaken or mend relationships with the adversary, I appologise - which does happen, if rarely.
If my words are taken the wrong way I make sure to clarify what I ment and even appologise for being unclear but not for non-existing offense.
If you prefer to believe any kind of inane ideas as to my supposed willingess to offend and then deny it for fear of what... retribution and virtual scorn - go ahead, you handsomehunk.
miko
-
Ah miko... downplay it all you want. You are the one that started the thread on that very topic.
Way to go on the namecalling again Miko. That's about 2/3rds of your posts these days.
I feel kinda sorry for you.

Mini D: Way to go on the namecalling again Miko. That's about 2/3rds of your posts these days.
Your math is apparently as good as your lexical knowlege.
And your insessant desire to keep getting verbally abused by reading my bandwidth-wasting but offensive posts - you may want to consult a specialist for that obsession.
I started a joking thread on a minor technical issue. You jumped right in with personal attack in the form of comments on the worth of the content of my posting - fine with me. But maybe you should reconsider engaging in such polemics if they drive you into banging you head, crybaby.
miko
-
If you say it enough miko, people might believe it.
Not much else going on in this thread except you trying to convince me that you really didn't mean to be insulting when you insulted people and you really aren't that concerned about something that you posted a concern about.
Carry on.
MiniD

i dunno...its pretty obvious your allegance is with your country or why else would you live there???(yes i know you were born there its totally "cool" place to live whatever...i dont care)
of course i would have prefered to keep avatars gone and keep attachment allowing...mikod is right but it wont be a problem...
