Title: Would they ever reinstate the draft?
Post by: davidpt40 on March 27, 2003, 09:49:05 PM
Was talking to a friend at work who served during the first Gulf War.  He is against the war.  We were talking and he started jabbering about how I wouldnt be 'pro-war' if they started the draft up again.

So what would the requirements be for re-starting a draft?  Attacks on U.S. bases across Europe?  Attacks on U.S. territories?  Attacks on the states?

I wouldn't object to serving if a national draft was enstated.  However, I don't relish the thought of serving under someone with less education/less intelligence than I have.  I think that would be my biggest fear (that and getting shot in the face).

Any number of things could cause a draft.  Right now (and I'm not just talking about Iraq) we are fighting a war against terrorism.  It's likely to get more heated before it gets better.  The military needs bodies for that.  Fortunately, we have enough volunteers and the battles we are fighting are small enough in scale that we don't have a shortage.

However, if we move onto multiple fronts, and the volunteer rate slows down (right now it's drastically picking up), then they may approve a draft.

I don't know what your education level and/or intelligence is, but the average person in the military is much smarter than ten or twenty years ago.  That being said, and having served, I'd much rather be serving under a moron with good combat experience and battle knowledge than a Harvard grad with none.

(For those in the know, please correct me)

For a draft to be re-instated there would be a) a massive loss of life and/or b) a demand for soldiers which is much higher than the supply.

For the intelligence level: Either you are more educated than they are, or they are more educated than you are. In the case of Commissioned Officers, they need a 4 year college degree these days (dunno if it's changed, just know what I've read). For NCOs, they typically need a 2 year degree (or is it sophomore level college education?) OR they have been in the service long enough to attain their rank: In which case they definitely know their toejam. For any other education (which would basically be highschool/GED) you start off at the bottom rung in basic, and must work your way up.

That being said, I have worked for a Sergeant Major in a civilian job- and while I had a higher education level (in terms of college), there is no question in my mind... whatever he told me to do, I would of done it immediately. He had way more knowledge than I did when it came down to battlefield, and even other military, duties. I would of not asked, I would of simply done.

The guys who have been in the military long enough to get their ranks have their ranks because they are FAR more knowledgeable (education does not matter here) than any entry level recruit.

if you use the word relish in a sentence you had better go officer.

if they tell you the military is not full of rock stupid people. they are full of crap. not to say there are not intelegent people in the military but there is a really high percentage of really first class anal retentive jerkballs who got where they are but being the only guy who reenlisted. ask around its no secret.

if you go and want a challenge go for a some sort of special forces, from what i have seen airborne army is a nice mix of professionalism without the false snobbery that infects some of the more elite smaller forces.

I just want to know why men are required to register for "Selective Service" and women are not.

I think if you just showed them your "military morons" post that you made here they'd hustle to find a suitable job for you.
