come on guys bring back the pics.. it was the best part of this BBS.. now alll we got is wading through page after page of dribble.
some one said its because you need the space.. why not get a better computer...server or what ever..
Is this just another part of the drip drip drip falling apart of AH?
brown nosers need not reply..
-
Yes I also miss having the ability to post screenshots and such
-
i agree
-
Pictures are still possible - it just means you use your own webspace for hosting them instead of HTC hosting everybody's! I'm sorry to see a lot of the existing pictures gone, but I can fully appreciate the reasons.
Anyway, here is a picture of Stamper enjoying the UK Con last year:

;)

Sorry, Flossy but that only applies to websites that support remote image hosting. Most (if not all) of the free websites don't. Players on a budget enjoyed the convenience of being able to upload images the same way we can in the BigWeek newsgroup.
However, if it will free up the server to not have those images on it .... if it benefits the game, I support it. If it doesn't ... I'd like to see the feature back.

Did HTC say it was because pictures where taking up to much space? Or, could it have had something to do with Content of some pictures?
-
My guess would be content. Maybe they feel that if the offending content is not held on their servers than its not their problem or something along those lines.
-
SON OF A !@$!# i posted a edited BoB pic so i wouldnt lose it. But Now ITs GONE!!!!!
Thanks Alot HTC.
-
My bet is that HTC hosted images take an amazing amount of bandwidth, probably about half the BBS's.
and in case you didnt know, bandwidth = money.
-
As someone who runs a bbs...its more like 90% of the bandwidth.
One small pic is larger than 100 long posts
-
if old threads are regularly deleted, that means old pics are deleted as well and space will never run out
-
Let me see if this thing works.

SELECTOR.
Not really a problem. Most ISPs provide their users with some web space. I am with broadband ADSL provider http://www.legend.co.uk and get 20MB included in the price. All you need in order to upload files to your space is an FTP client. I use CuteFTP - http://www.cuteftp.com -, which is quite adequate for this purpose.
Several advantages come about with using your own webspace. You can place an image anywhere you like instead of at the end, there is no limit to the file size, and no limit to uploaded file types. Be sure to upload files whose names are in lower case letters, or you will get a case mismatch problem. Some FTP clients (eg. Terrapin) warn about this, and offer to make the conversion.
As for why HTC did it - the message board seems to be on the same server as the game itself. Prevents us whining if we can't play the game due to server down! LOL But yes, space problems, and impact upon the game (lag) as all those picture files are uploaded/downloaded. They could have put the BBS on a separate server, but made the choice to disable pics instead.
Here's one I prepared earlier.

Why desnt it work?

You need to enter the url of the actual picture..... to do this, right click on the picture you want and click on Properties. This will bring up a box giving the url - copy and paste it into the image box. :)

here ya go Ecke
(http://link.freepichosting.com/image.cgi/29252/3.jpg)
and yep, you can't link to that kind of image. it just posts it as an url
(http://www.me109.net/forum/upload/attachment.php?postid=375)
-
Ecke - not bad, but that URL needs to have
{IMG}....{/IMG}
around it (square brackets).
-
For those going on about the disk space, I suspect it's also about the bandwidth. When you open a picture, you are in fact downloading it to your PC and using up bandwidth where the picture is stored. Everbody who has an email address should also have web space. Takes two seconds to store it there and link to it.

so HTC is going for quantity not quality:(
-
thanks mates:)
@Beetle
first i click on 'insert image'. then i copy the adress into the box.
And as long as i edit this reply, there are these square brackets around it.
But after submitting reply, there is only a link to see.
last try:

ecke!
I tried it and got the same thing. Looks like a BBS address. Can you not load your picture to your webspace? I'll host it on mine for you for the time being. Right click on the image to display the URL. I'll leave it there as long as you like if you were wanting to post this pic in other threads.

I don't think so. If anything, it allows for better quality pictures, as hosting them externally means they are not limited in size, as attachments were. Also, several pictures can be included in the same message without the need for a separate post for each attachment.
If anything, I think the quality of connections, etc, will improve.... :)

OK, how about this site that XtrmeJ used for his screensot - http://link.freepichosting.com ? OK, it has a banner across the bottom, but if it does the job.... :)
-
Thank you beetle and all,
now i got it.
Obviously,it is not possible to bring pix here, which i posted before on our abbeville kids forum.
I have to talk with our board admins.

I use two websites for my stuff.
The imagestation allows small to medium pics, does not allow access to "original" jpgs and works well for posting up samples. Works ok for what I use it for. Good place to store transparent gifs.
It's free ( and very clunky to use ) Some samples:

http://www.imagestation.com/
The second is for my wallpapers. EXCELLENT site, allows access to "originals" of any size, and storage is huge. I've got 180 wallpapers in there so far..
If I remember correctly it was 30 bucks for a year. With a 30 day free trial. Easy interface and have had zero problems. Highly recommended.

yeah I totally agree it's a big waste of time to upload your pics to the web and the post them here. How about reducing the size from 100k to 50k for pics posted here?
-
I'm kind of disappointed that they axed all of the images that were already on the BBS (maybe that couldn't be helped), but I was pretty suprised they allowed for it in the first place. That is a lot of space and bandwidth.

Well.. they didn't axe this one in time. From HiTech's wedding:

In my day, we were lucky to have two wings! If you were missing a wing you stuck one arm out and flapped away! And that's the way it was, and we liked it!!
