They love their country like a child loves its mother.
They are idealists.
All Americans i met personally here in Europe were nice and friendly.
They have a sense of humour.
I like their accent
:)
Regards Blitz
Was never in the States because of time or money.
Hope i will visit it some day. Can't wait to get my boots on and run through yellowstone national park, San Franzisco and Lost Angeles.
The girl i live with for 20 years now was there a few years ago.
She did 2000 kilometers with her bicycle and liked it :)

Blitz,
I was in France and Germany two years ago, I found the French arrogant and stuffy very in love with things not American. The Germans on the other hand were just the opposite, very warm and a lot of fun to be around.
If you get to the US please let me know, I live in Florida and would love to return the hospitality and friendship shown to me when I was in your country.
It looks as I wont be traveling to Europe anytime soon, you see I’m rather found of staying alive and we don't look to welcome over there.

WE don't have an accent!
YOU guys have the accent.
Sheesh, everyone knows that.

A Capitalist outlook would help here, so I can see why there's a problem. ;)
Blitz - 2 Yanks coming to the con next month. When you get to Yellowstone, be sure also to check out the Grand Tetons 100 miles to the south.

Hehe - Alaska and Man-hi. Yes, they were kind enough to give me a ride back to Amsterdam after the con. I think one of them was working for the US Gov. in Europe somewhere? Damned nice car they had - Merc C260. After we got to Amsterdam, we parked the car, got those guys checked into a hotel, had a bite to eat, and then I took them on a tour of the red light district. :)

Actually I thought the accents in LA extremely difficult to understand at times, unlike Washington which I found easy.
Mind you everyone had alot of trouble with mine...aparently Aussies talk to fast, and use too much slang.

We stayed at the 2002 Finals just as long as your English blokes did. ;)

I like Americans......
.....'cause my sister married one ( great bloke he is too ), and I have several nieces and nephews who are Americans.
... 'cause they (as a nation) have the balls to stand up and fight for what they believe to be right, regardless of the cost to themselves.
.....'cause they believe 'everyone' has the same rights they do, not just the folks who speak the same language, or live on the same continent, or pray to the same God.
.......'cause they are generally likeable :) Every American I have ever met just wanted to get on with enjoying the life, liberty and the freedoms their country stands for, and has fought to provide them with.
......'cause they know how to make stuff PROPPERLY. ie, cars, motorcycles, aircraft, boats.......he he...weapons :)
.......'cause their fathers and grandfathers pretty much saved my country from the japanese sixty years ago. (something which i feel a lot of people forgot all too quickly)
.........'cause a few years ago, when the largest Muslim population in the world was making some rather rude noises just a bit north of here, they sent out a bunch of Marines, ships, choppers, planes etc to sorta hang out off Townsville for a while and hold umm...."scheduled excersises".
.........'cause when rattling the old saber just doesnt quite work anymore, they'll draw said sabre, and use it to dellicately cut diseased bits out, rather than just cutting the head clean off, as most other 'sabre rattle' capable countries have been known to do.
But mostly, because they (the ones i know) are nice people.
Yanks, and God speed and good fortune to your troops and ours.

Soccer, i hate soccer but other than that- You're welcome :)
Once i picked up an american guy and his australian buddy on the street while they were hitchhiking. The lived at my flat about a week and i didn't regret it. Still have the american guys 'Smoking Jacke', he bought in London before they came to Germany. He gave it to me after i lend him a raining coat for a lifetime because it was raining, the day they left. Still got his bill from 'Carnegie Hall' in London, too, which was inside the jacket :)

Yeah was pleased you did well actually, seems football is very much looked down on by some people in your country, maybe a good world cup run will stimulate some interest.
As for you going as far as England did - look at the teams you had compared to ours : -
USA - Portugal, Korea, Poland, Mexico and Germany
England - Nigeria, Sweden, Argentina, Demark and Brazil (got beaten by a lucky goal too! ;))
-
Blitz,
My grandparents are from Germany, and when I visited, I found the German people some of the most friendly I have ever met...
If you ever visit Florida in the U.S. you have a place to stay here with my family...

Kiwis, my good man, and they lost it too.
Not the first time.

Speaking of accents...
I was once in a bar in Los Angeles and hit up a converstion with some guy from Scotland, but I could not understand a single thing the guy was saying! I know we both had some drink in us, but man oh man...we were both speaking the same language and I couldn't understand him.

My grandfather was born in Scotland. He worked very hard to get rid of his accent and wouldn't allow it in his kids. When he got drunk it all came out tho even 75 years later.

Blitz, thanks! I might hit you up on that even though you don't like soccer. (amazing, considering you have a fantastic domestic league in Germany too!)
Furball, yeah, you definitely had the tougher group to play out of, but you have to admit, going up 3-0 on Portugal (who was a top 5 team at the time) in the first half of the opening game was pretty impressive. We had a let down against Poland, but played extremely well in a 2-0 win over Mexico, who had finished ahead of Italy in group play! We lost to Germany 1-0, in a game in which just about everyone agrees we outplayed them. Oliver Kahn was the man of that game, stopping several sure goals. Also, there was an inadvertant handball on a German defender in the second half that kept the ball from fully crossing the goal line. It was actually hard to tell if the ball was fully in or not, however, even an inadvertant handball that gives a player an advantage (in this case stopping a goal) can be called for a foul. A PK would almost assuredly tied the game (tho who knows, as Friedel stopped 2 PKs himself over the 5 games played!)
Heh, yeah, Seaman was a bit off his line and that cross turned into a goal. I don't think Rivaldo (that's who scored, right?) was shooting, but he got lucky. In our Q-Final, Reyna almost caught Kahn off his line from about 50 yards out, but the ball was wide. That woulda been a hilarious equalizer! ;)
In our friendly this weekend, Landon Donovan did his Michael Owen impersonation with a 50 yard run through 2 defenders and left a 3rd yards behind and slotted one past the keeper. We might have ourselves a world class player in the making. ;)

I can't say much for beet1e's laughing; exept I have never seen a engine come out of The Uk that was worth the money i could get out of it at a scrap heap. None the less a car.
I do have to admit though you guys make 1 hell of a good beer.

Ever heard of Cosworth Technology? The little engine builder in England,..that supplies many of the best racing engines in the world.
-
Mind you everyone had alot of trouble with mine...aparently Aussies talk to fast, and use too much slang.
just the accent.. a lot of Aussies stay here in the winter and I've gotten used to the slang but one thing that got me for a while was when selling my car,, they asked how many moiles were on it...
MOILES??? hehe

skuzzy... cosworth built an engine for Vega that was very fast but... didn't hold up in a street driven car. They have done some work for Ltus that was high efficiency but... somewhat unreliable..
They do have one good engine tho... the Rover V8... oh, wait... that's a Buick.... they did have the very reliable Jensen interceptor v8 uh... no... that was a chrysler.... uh...
nevermind.

The Aston Martin DB's V-12 is a Cosworth design.
Practically every Ford V-8 engine that won at Indy 500 was a Cosworth design.
There are a couple of F1 engines that are Cosworth designed too. Can't recall the company they operate under though.
Most of the good stuff is not built by them, but designed by them for others. They do supply head and block assemblies to various auto companies around the world.
To be sure, they have had some bone head designs, but they also have more than a couple of winners going for them.
Ford still uses them for head design for the HO parts they sell for the Windsor blocks.
-
Very nice ... thanks Bluedog, and you too Blitz
-
Skuzzy - didn't one of the Corvettes have a Cosworth engine, or an engine that had Cosworth components like pistons?
AFAIK, all the Jaguar engines were designed and built in the UK.
The only V8 engines that I know of that were built here were the Rolls-Royce/Bentley series, Aston Martin, Triumph Stag (a terrible engine), the Rover/Buick that Lazs mentioned, and the 2˝ litre Daimler.
-
Cosworth also put engines in the Ford Sierra etc in the 80s. Superb engines from a superb company.
Back in the day, these were the thing to have. Fairly affordable too.
British racing design permeates most formulas in the world and dominates F1. The Ferrari F1 cars are designed and race managed by Brits.
-
Not sure beet1e. I know General Motors has used Cosworth, but cannot recall where the engines landed.
Cosworth specializes in low volume, high performance designs, which is why Ford, Jaguar, Aston-Martin, and several other boutique car makers use them.
Ford has used Cosworth designs for a long time. A lot of engine consultation goes on between Ford and Cosworth. I don't know why Ford has not bought them yet.
-
no... GM used the cosworth in the ill fated Vega and uses some cosworth engineering in it's racing program. you might be thiking of the old zr1(?) not sure of the designation, corvette that used a motor built by Mercury outboard.

Hard to believe that Britain was once the biggest car exporter in the world - c1950. :(
I worked for Honda in the early 1990s, and they built an engine plant on the site formerly occupied by South Marston airfield near Swindon. Aluminium ingots would be melted down and poured into a cast. After cooling down, the engine was all in one piece, and the cylinder head had to be cut off the engine block. Then they put in the spark plugs, valve gear, crankshaft, connecting rods and pistons, and electrics. All that remained to be done was to put oil in it, and start it up! And most of the engines built this way would start first time. All that was missing was a supply of properly built Rover cars to put the engines in. And hey-presto, the Honda Concerto rose from the ashes of the Rover 213.

Yeah you did very well! there were a few english clubs interested in landon donovan, problem with americans playing in the premiership is unless they hold a passport with dual nationality (to an EU country) they require a work permit to play here. Which means they have to play a minimum number of games each season before it can be renewed. I think that was the problem why Everton didn't finalise a deal for Brian McBride.
As for Brad Friedel, i know he is a very good goalkeeper, and he is having an amazing season for blackburn this year. It was Ronaldinho who scored the lucky goal against england.
I am an Arsenal supporter, and if there is a better defensive midfielder than Patrick Vieira or forward than Thierry Henry - i would love to see them :D
