Title: Need some help with joystick Setup
Post by: 8BAL on March 30, 2003, 01:18:45 AM
Hey All :D

Hope some of you remember me from Airwarrior. I been out of action a long time. Well I finally caught up with you all.

I am haveing some problems with getting some of the features of my joystick to work in game. I am running Windows XP Pro and using my old Microsoft Sidewinder Pricision Pro stick. I cant seem to get my rudder controls, hat views and buttons other than the weapons to function. I followed the directions on  pages in here for joystick setup but I must be doing something wrong. I would appreciate any advice on how to get them goin.

Also anybody know where in here I can find some of my old Airwarrior squad mates? Like zak7, GUNNY, SPRKY, geo7, 20MM, etc...

Later,

8ball

I suspect your problem is the XP vs Gameport joystick.

I think almost all XP users end up going USB to get around this.

Could be wrong but thats my take on it.

Welcome to AH,
MSPP came with a USB adapter.  I still use one on my Guam puter.  XP will recognize the stick and install the XP native drivers which work great.  I didn't install the MS Profiler.  Just set it up in AH as explained here:
http://www.hitechcreations.com/forums/showthread.php?s=&threadid=70564  ( Hmmm... all the images have been removed with new BBS format.  One picture is worth a thousand words , but you can still dig the info outta the text).

Also,  scale down sensitvity for  pitch and yaw with sliders, etc.  Do a forum search on stick scaling.

Title: Thanks for the info guys

:D

I just checked in figuring I wouldnt see any responses so quickly, thanks much for the info. I will check the link out and hopefully it will get me goin.

Yeah, I dont have my USB connector in use, when I got the stick I didnt have USB capable machine and the adapter is somewhere in the great void.  Prolly be easier just to pick up one at the local comp usa or best buy type store. I using the serial port connector. But I figure it should all still work, but I agree, I may need to manual input it with the serial.

Thanks again all :D

8Bal.

I have that stick, and you can't run it properly with W2000 or W-XP. Folks in here will tell you that you can, and that W2000/XP have their own drivers for it, but what's missing is the Microsoft Sidewinder software (http://www.microsoft.com/hardware/sidewinder/Downloads.asp) v3.02. On that site, you will see a Prec. Pro new version stick. Mine is the old version 1 stick. Which is yours?

The software for my stick is flawed because it always tries to install to C:\WINDOWS when running SETUP. On W2000, the windows directory is of course C:\WINNT. So yes, the W2000 drivers will make it possible to fly with that stick, but it's still not possible to program the base buttons - (those are the settings that get stored in your .SW4 file). That's why I'm stuck with W-Me.

I went back to my precision pro stick just recently.

I couldn't get the programming software to work either so I just used the USB adapter to get the stick recognised in XP and then used the Stick mapper in AH to program the view on the hat and the other buttons.  I'm still trying to work out how to get the shift function working on the stick in the mapping...but I don't "think" it can be done.

Not 8ball! good stick! Yea, try scoring a usb stick. I remember you in FR, getting an 8ball kill was one you had to brag about. Lotsa AW guys here, hispd, ductape, eh?, asw, gooss, GA come to mind. Many others. In fact, I hear many old time AH guys saying what an improvement all the AW guys brought to this game. Back to subject, the current non force feedback stick will cost 40 bucks u.s. currency, force feedback around 100. Great ergonomics compared to most sticks, less programability, but e-z to set up and use.

I have been using the ms force feed back pro and all works good in XP. I went through the calibrate mode first the program joy stick as directions. Got all 8 views and C button set for up then hold the up C down and move hat for 8 top views. Not using the sidewinder software all is in the game. !st set up stick in WinXP then the game.

Mine IS exactly like yours and DOES work with native XP drivers and AH in-game setup.

But does XP (or 2000) make provision for programming of the base buttons?  AH might allow single character substitution but, for example, how do you make a single button press type the string /.speed 180[ENTER] ? If you can do that, send me your setup files and I will start using them myself. But I can't work out how you would do that.

Beetle,
No it doesn't, but there aren't enough button to waste on a command like that anyway.  I don't think it recognizes the shift button either. I just use the base buttons assigned to normal AH functions ie: look up, lower flaps, raise flaps, damage, etc.  Also you can assign 4 diiferent sticksets in AH.

Ah well, there you are then. :D I don't use base buttons for views. I use them for functions that I need close at hand (no fumbling on the KB) and for long command strings - mainly /.speed and /.salvo I also have /.Death to all LA7[ENTER]. ;) If I want to vary my climb speed, I don't want to have to type in the full command. For the additional views in cruise flight, I am happy to use the numeric keypad.

Different keystrokes for different folks - but that's why I prefer to use the Microsoft Sidewinder software. To each his own.

Oh, and it DOES recognise the shift button.
