Used to have one in my home system BGB. Not the fastest card around, but I never had any real problems with it.
I'll have to dig up what version of the ATI drivers I was using> I never installed the Cat drivers. I think I used the last one before the Catalyst drivers was available.
I'll see what I can find, when I get home.

That might be the most disturbing thing I have seen written on the BBS.

just look for the old CATALYST 2.5 drivers. 2.5 works best with my radeon 7500 PCI and maybe you should try the 2.5
just tell me your email adress and i will send you catalyst 2.5 if you want

What resolution you running?
I noticed a HUGE diff on my new Radeon 9000 Pro between 800x600 & 1024x768.
Plus planes are actually larger & easier to shoot in the lower res setting.
You don't "Need" to run 1600x1200 to have it look good.

I have a 64mb DDR 8500..
Not estatic with it but its a year old now. I get 100 fps(monitor max) down to 60 or so in smoke.
thats on an 1800 athelon.

I was using tthe ATI driver version 5.13.01.6073. It appears to be the last version before the Catalyst drivers were released.
-
hmm...i would think it would do better...my gforce 2 MX runs the game at up to 85fps (monitor max)
-
so are catalysts worse ? I really have very limited knowledge on "drivers-catalyts"..i know i need drivers to make softare work.. but thats baout it.
Where could i find that particualr driver Skuzzy....

Go here: ATI's Find A Driver Link (http://mirror.ati.com/support/driver.html)
After putting the Operating System, and Card type, it will take you to a download page.
The page it takes you too, is the latest video driver for that card of yours. At the bottom, you can look at 'Previous Drivers' and get the driver I listed above.
Follow the installation instructions at ATI's WEB site.
Basically, it involces a multi-step process.
1) Get the driver from ATI you want to install and put it in a spot on your local HD that you can remember.
2) Go to the Windows Control Panel and open "Add/Remove Software"
3) Find the ATI driver and display panel and remove them
4) Reboot your computer
5) At this time you should be in VGA mode. Make sure your are.
6) The run the file you downloaded from ATI. It will install the drivers.
7) Reboot, and you should be done.

i have the same card same proformance as pongo.
there is a le ( lower clock slower memory) version that is a lot less powerfull i think.
-
That would be the LE and/or 128MB versions of the 8500. Yes,..they are slower. Not nearly as good as the 64MB version.

unforunately....YES....compar ed to the "full version"...but you should still be fine in AH...not that demanding a game...at least till AH2 comes out
-
lolol
unfortunalty.. YES..
well atleast i can laff about it.owell..
:)

LE: 250 MHz clock speeds
full retail: 275 MHz
difference in speed :275 - 250 / 250 x 100% = 10%
So theoretically if you are getting 50 fps now, you would get 55 fps with a full retail version.
If 5 fps bothers you that much, get the rage 3d tweaker and overclock it. If you are lucky, your card will still be stable at 275 MHz.
I have a full retail 275 MHz 128 MB card and love it.
Your control panel settings can affect your speed a lot as well. My card runs AH best at 1600x1200x32 with Anti-aliasing x2 and everything else cranked up all the way. I also disable video sync with no aparent penalties.
Catalyst 2.5 ran the fastest, 3.1 the slowest. Catalyst 3.2 seems to have recovered all of the speed of 2.5 and has fewer compatibility problems. I am hoping Catalyst 3.3 solves the only problem I still have with the 8500: Strike Fighters Project 1, which I can only get to run halfway decent by using the Rage 3D Tweaker to disable TCL (hardware terrain and lighting).
At $130 from Comp USA, the 275 MHz/128 MB Radeon 8500 was a real bargain compared to the $200 I paid for my Voodoo 5500. Though I must say the Voodoo 5500 still plays all my games very well with equal or better image quality and only 5% to 20% slower than the Radeon on average.
