Post by: Pfunk on April 01, 2003, 10:00:15 PM
Ok guys I have a project due for the dumbest college class ever.  Could those who own TIVO please answer these questions.  Your help is greatly appreciated.  Thanks in advance.

When did you purchase TIVO?

How often do you use it?

What are the advantages of TIVO?

What are the disadvantages of TIVO?

Ok guys I have a project due for the dumbest college class ever.  Could those who own TIVO please answer these questions.  Your help is greatly appreciated.  Thanks in advance.

When did you purchase TIVO?
11/02

How often do you use it?
Daily

What are the advantages of TIVO?
I watch what I want when I want.  I don't watch commercials.  I have it programmed to scan the movie channels for classic movies by my favorite directors, and I have about 40 movies saved.  It automatically finds and records all showings of shows and racing series that I follow.

What are the disadvantages of TIVO?
None whatsoever.  I watch TV for less time each day but I see more shows/movies/sporting events that I want to watch.

What Funked said. Bought two of them a year or so ago, and absolutely love them.

I have a ReplayTV, another PVR like Tivo.  I bought it two years ago, and it has changed my TV viewing forever.  I catch shows I would otherwise miss, I watch less TV (because I can watch my shows in one session instead of hanging out waiting for the next show to come on) and I never have to watch anything boring again because 'it's the only thing on'.

No disadvantages.

When did you purchase TIVO?
December 2002.

How often do you use it?
Wife uses it every day.

What are the advantages of TIVO?
It's all saved to a hard drive.  No flipping through video tapes to find what you taped or fast-forwarding through a tape to find what you taped.  And if you are watching something and 35 minutes into the show you decide you really like the show, you can hit record and it'll save the entire show (starting from the beginning) [because it's technically recording anything you are viewing anyway.]
Oh yeah, so when you come home everything is ready for you to view and you can just skip the commercials.

What are the disadvantages of TIVO?
I no longer get to watch t.v. 'cause it's wife's domain.  Sometimes I come out to watch t.v. and the wife is recording something and with our setup, you can't watch something on another channel when it's recording.  (Though I can watch a DVD, something already recorded to TIVO or play Gamecube.)

Actually... What kind of project is this?

Or are you getting paid 25 cents per each marketing survey result? ;)

Hah, I wish I was making money off this, actually it is for my Housing and Technology Class in my major.  The professor probably wants to buy TIVO and doesnt know much about it so she is making us research it for her.  I have to write a 3 page paper based on my survey and also answer if I will ever buy TIVO or not and why.

The DirecTV/TiVo combo is the only way to go.
You get two tuners, so you can watch live while recording, or you can record two things at once.  It's also about half the price of a standard TiVo.

Puke it's pretty easy to rig up a standard TiVo so that you can watch live TV while it's recording.  If you want to know how, drop me an email funkedup at raf303 dot org.

DishNet has thier own PVR.  We stopped watching live TV almost immediately.  Have two units (60 hours each) and have them record our favorites and then watch when we have time.
The 30 second skip button on the remote is about worn out. :D

I can't go back to regular viewing now.  No way.  The things have us spoiled.  The DishNet PVR has a really nice interface and the guides are almost instantaneous.
It's just so freaking easy to use and the picture quality is better than it was with the standard DishNet receivers.

When did you purchase TIVO?
05/02 <- work perk, gotta keep an eye on the competition :)

How often do you use it?
almost Daily

What are the advantages of TIVO?
I watch what I want when I want.  I don't watch commercials.  I don't miss much on Discovery Wings. Between the tivo and the VCR we don't miss anything, unless I screw up. Dub shows down to vcr to play on br tv/vcr while on tread mill.

What are the disadvantages of TIVO?
None whatsoever.  I watch TV for less time each day but I see more shows/movies/sporting events that I want to watch.

(thx for the template funkedup :))

Again guys thanks so much for the input, you made this assignment very simple for me to do.  One question however, so you can store up to 60hrs on one unit, do the units have an output that allows you to transfer what you have stored to say a VHS tape or for that matter does it allow you to burn what you have recorded on a DVD of CD?

They sell them with up to 80 hours recording time.
You can upgrade and add hard drives to expand recording time.
Any standard IDE drive will work.  You get (roughly) 1 hour per GB of drive space.  I run a 120 GB drive in mine.  I think people have gone as high as 400 GB.

It has a feature to save programming to video tape.  There are multiple outputs you can connect a VCR to.

Lots of TiVo nerds here:  http://www.tivocommunity.com/tivo-vb/

My PVR has S-VHS outputs,..connect to whatever and record/burn away.   Like funk said, the disks are standard IDE drives.  Want more, just replace it.
If you can connect it to your TV, then you can record it.
