Animal's thread about pistols got me thinking...
If you have eye dominance issues (like I do... I write, draw, etc. right-handed; but I shoot rifles, play billiards, etc. LEFT-handed) which side would you naturally gravitate towards for pistol-shooting? and would this affect the usage of safeties and whatnot?
Just curious.

I had this problem when learning to shoot, I shot right handed but sighted with my left eye. I then decided to train myself to use my right eye and it's ok now I guess.

For starters, here's a great thread on this subject from AccurateReloading's BBS: http://www.serveroptions.com/ubb/ultimatebb.php?ubb=get_topic;f=2;t=003417
Most people I've talked to say that they just learn to shoot left-handed. My sister is a righty but left-eye dominant. My dad had her learn to shoot rifles left-handed.
With pistols I don't believe that it is as big a deal. At least not anymore. In the old days you were taught to sight a pistol with one eye closed, just like a rifle. However many combat pistol instructors are teaching their students to fire a pistol with both eyes open. (I believe this has to do with allowing the shooter to use his peripheral vision to stay more aware of his surroundings).
FYI, many newer double-action automatics come with ambidextrious safeties and slide-releases, so it's not a concern there.

eye dominance won't affect your shooting, unless you already have learned bad habits. For example, shooting right handed and sighting left handed. If you already do that, you'll have to unlearn it. If you haven't spent time learning gun handling, you won't notice a difference.

And hope it doesn't do what my remote and camera do when I need them. Nothing. 'Cause the battery ran out. :D

I have the same exact problem. Pistols feel much better in my right hand than my left, but I want to sight with my left eye. And I have already done a lot of rifle and shotgun shooting as a lefty, so I'm not switching eyes. I'm just going to learn to shoot a pistol lefty.

i had that problem when i was learning with firearms, grandpa's cure was , he put a eyepatch over my left eye to train my right eye , it worked .

im right handed
when I shoot I keep both eyes open and just disregard the info from the left eye. It sounds kinda wierd, but it really works for me and I shoot very well. I think when I close my left eye, all the aeons of evolution and using stereo vision goes down the drain and I'm handicapping myself.

So you aren't supposed to shut both your eyes when firing a gun?

You been reading the Republican Guard field manual again?

Well, it was cheaper than the real marksmanship manuals....

Lol, you've been watching Roger Moore on TBS, haven't you! License to Flinch!
Actually, I think I'd have a relatively easy time firing a pistol from either hand, although I'd still only use my left eye (but both eyes open) for sighting.
I belonged to a Junior Rifle Team when i was young. I was the only "lefty", and it was a little awkward to have to reach over to slide the bolt (.22 single-shot bolt action). The biggest pain was during competitions... I'd have to make sure that I was always at the end of the row, so that during the "prone" portion, my legs were not hitting someone else's legs... i.e. / / / / / \
Target shooting was sooooo much fun... I'd love to get back into it someday. I miss the smell. (you shooters know what I mean, don't ya!)

Eye Dominance...
I used a red Dot sigth on my Ruger 10/22 22. Carbine Rifle
With this scope -it has 1x magnify - you keep both eyes open..The red dot just kind to seems to be in the middle of your eye..EXCeelent for shooting rapid fire at moving targets..

I have non-binocular vision, I shoot with both eyes open, can shoot either left or right eye, and left or right handed. I'm an extremely good shoot as my vision is unimpaired by the stereoscopic vision. When I used to do target shooting only my breathing affected things, you could hold a ruler vertical to a 10 shot grouping, and every hit would be lined up perfectly in the verticle axis.
I write left handed but and my strong eye is my left eye.

get an auto for each hand... and some extra clips... no worries :)
