It's about an intervent F/A-18 recently shot down by Iraqi Aircraft Defence.
Look at the pictures at the right. The ones highlited with red ovals have Russian words. "Compressed air" and "During transportation to not hold at the covers!". Kinda strange for a wreck of an American plane.
Looks almost exactly like that "Serbian" MiG-29 shot down over Bosnia in 1999. That time French TV operator showed Latin script on a Serbian (Cyrillic nation) plane made in Russia (Cyrillic nation too).
So far the only explaination is that they show the remnants of a Soviet "Krug" ("Circle") SAM, that blew up the bandit.
When I saw this footage on TV I thought I am mistaken, there could not be letters like >I< (ZH), Cyrrilic "D", "P" and others, but that screenshots prove that I was right.

Awfully big pieces to be the remander of an exploded missile...

I don't suppose Russian arms exporters would put latin characters on products designed for export.

As a supposed-to be weapon engineer I can imagine conditions when missile body isn't damaged after a warhead explosion...
SAM warheads are strictly directional, making a... "torus"? "cone"? "conical ring"? of particles.

True. But big flat pieces? How large is that rocket anyway?

Hmm.
Maybe at least 5-7m long. it's a portable missile launcher at one vehicle, not an 11m monster I worked with.
BTW, I can translate some facts about Iraqi tanks... They had Polish T-72 with parallax sights, but autoloader was in place. They even made some T-72s themselves, and installed autoloaders on some Chneese T-62 clones. Their greatest problem with homemade tanks was the cannon resourse, no more then 100-200 shots. AFAIK D-81 cannon had the same resourse...
I'll post an anecdote about tank gunners tomorrow...
going home now...

Someone should point out that the F-18 isn't part of our VVS , but rathehr our AVMF :)

I can't even tell exactly what I'm looking at in those pictures. But is the point that this is the missile that downed a USN FA18? Anyway, I have no knowledge of the Krug missile, but I'm guessing if it's a semi-larger missile, that it will have a booster stage and that could be what you are looking at. During the terminal stage, missiles are typically just gliding. If they miss, they typically go ballistic and explode in the sky...and typically, when they explode, they pretty much destroy themselves so that they do not rain large chunks down on cities. I would imagine this is the same for when it's exploding whether via proximity fuse, contact fuse or remote that the missile would pretty much disentegrate.
