Title: A note about avatars.
Post by: squelch_19 on April 06, 2003, 12:07:35 PM
I had a juicy little avatar that I really liked until about a 15 minutes ago. Cute chicks in swimsuits, mmmmmm.

Somehow I had forgotten about how many kids play this game.

Even though you didn't see anything in my avatar that you can't see on public television, I feel stupid knowing I posted it in a forum that is bound to attract a few kids.

I'm not trying to dictate what avatar anyone uses. But I really don't think I would want my kid seeing some of the ones in here.

So it's back to 'Old Glory' for me.

Just something to think about for you all that have little gifs flashing around that go along the same lines mine did.

LMAO! Yeah, you nailed it Sandman. :)

But nobody from HTC said anything about it. That post from Hawklore about turning 15 drove it home.

Got kids of my own. Even though I'd never turn a 15 y/o kid loose on the internet unsupervised, I still gotta respect the parents that trust their kids a little more than I see fit. It's a free country.

But I don't think kids should see stuff like I had in my avatar.

Furball, what do you mean "when I was 15"? Heck, I'll watch girls in bikinis until I go blind! :D

But that isn't the point. The thing is some parents let their kids play online games such as this one because they see no harm in a flight sim. Which there isn't any harm in a flight sim.

The problem is that people like me forget that kids will play this game (sign up for the boards, ect...), and post some things here that we really would not want our own children exposed to.

So why post for any child that might see it? I'm sure there are some in our ranks here that are under 15...14...13...

People can use whatever pictures they want here. I'm just not going to post things I don't see fit for every age group, just in case.

I was hoping I would not have to say this, but some people just like to make every attempt to foil things for others.

Squelch, thank you.  Your avatar was a bit out there.  Nash is close and I am still thinking about it.  Fuzzy, I removed yours.

It has already been said, but this feature can be turned off as fast as it was turned on.  I would hate to see the abuse of a few cause it to disappear.
Of course, I have other options that can be exercised for those that wish to openly abuse this.

What if I say avatars with NAZI planes and symbols leave a bad taste?

Just because it wins an award does not make it appropriate.  However,  as you only have a portion of it as your avatar, I do not see an issue with it.

Oh Cobra,..I have no control over who HBO sells ad space to.

Skuzzy,
I didn't say you did.

And I wasn't referring to HBO...try ABC, CBS, NBC...none of which are "Cable".  Saturday and Sunday Afternoon sporting events show worse (i.e, Miller Lite commercial were two women are wrestling).

I'm definately not arguing that you can draw whatever line you like on your boards...don't misunderstand that.

I'll argue the merits of the line, but would never argue your right to draw them where you like.

But if the line is around what kids are exposed to or not exposed to, then Nash's avatar is no worse than the public airwaves, that our kids have already seen.

Animal's picture depicts the execution of another human being.  Not quite kid friendly material.  Parse it, crop it, how you like, but anyone familiar with that picture knows that it is of an execution.
Title: A note about avatars.
Post by: Hortlund on April 07, 2003, 02:24:46 PM
I just dont get it...

Breasts are not ok.

Pictures of skulls (squelch) and executions (animal) are ok.
For the children?

I know what I'd prefer to have my kids watching.

Post by: Skuzzy on April 07, 2003, 02:30:05 PM
Cobra,..my bad,..I was actually trying to be a bit humorous with my reply to you.  Forgot the dang smiley.

Most people are not going to know what that picture is, which Animal has maimed.

Could just as easily be someone having a difficult time on the porcelain chair as anything else.

As an avatar, I find the choice a bit disturbing, given the avatar is supposed to reflect the person it is attached to.

Im sure i heard it before..just cant remember.. But I dont like seeing peopl die..(well ones who i dont know how evil they are) ..I can say truthfully ...i would wacth soem people die who i know deserved it....

Post by: StSanta on April 07, 2003, 02:49:04 PM
Americans never cease to amaze me, allowing kids to see people die in films yet protecting them from seeing humans wearing as much as when they were born :)

Skuzzy, I dunno Seeing a man get a bullet in my head isn't my idea of fun - even if you remove the gun from the equation. The man still is getting shot, and he might even have living relatives. And given that both I and Hristo recognized it, the likelihood of others who saw the war directly recognizing is muh greater. But as you say, the avatar represents the person; perhaps this is Animal's virtual representation. Strange though; I've begun to think of him as more and more of an intelligent person, not someone who get pleasure out of attempting to shock people like Marilyn Manson. Might not give him enough credit though; this might indeed be a way of beating those who hold war in high regard. Then again, there are better ways of doing that.

Seeing people procreate, perhaps even creating life, leaves me feel vastly better than seeing life being taken away. Anyone arguing that a photo of two people having sex together is worse than a picture of someone getting ventilation holes in their skull and brain is, IMHO, a person with questionable moral and ethial standards. Make porn, not death I say. Or maybe we an combine the two for something truly disgusting. And crop the really icky bits away. Oops, sorry for sarcasm, couldn't help myself :).

Just my personal opinion that sex and nudity beats death any time - no matter what prize the picture won.

Animal, very provocative, and mayhap we need to be reminded of the grim facts of war, of what humans on a daily basis does to each other. I suspect however that your intent is to provoke, little more. While  that provokation only works partially with me, it leaves an easily discernable trace of lack of taste and humanity. OTOH, it is, as suggested, a good thing for war glorifiers to see

Maybe I should just find a picture of a Latin American getting his brains blown out by a bullet. Might make it easier for certain Latino American readers and contributors on this board to more easily imagine the victim being a loved one.

Your move, my excellent friend.

BGBMAW,

The executioner is a Vietnamese general whose family got brutally murdered by a group of vietcong, including that one which is being executed.

Some people around here glorify war way too much, it sickens me much more than that image.
