Probably was this question answered before, but i'm to lazy to search to :o
What is the most difference between dx8.1 and dx9?
Should I saddle over to dx9?

My System: PIII 866MHz with 384 MB SDRAM
                   GForce 440MX 64MB with 40.72 Detonator
                   Thrustmaster FF
                    Win XP pro with SP1

Yes, and if I change to dx9, any recomendation for a good dx deinstall program?

I wouldn't.  If you do not have a video card and drivers that make use of DX9, then it is just a risk to upgrade.  There would be no advantage as the video driver would still use the DX8 functions and not DX9.
Sort of like buying nitro for a car that only runs on gas.  You might get away with burning some of the nitro in with the gas, but the risk is not worth it.

FWIW: I use a Geforce 4 Ti4600 and have had no problems whatsoever with Directx 9a

NASCAR Racing 2003 forced me to install DX9 and my Soundblaster Live card lost the ability to transmit radio over AH.  TurtleBeach Santa Cruz card solved that problem.  Didn't seem to affect my video, but that may be because my system is newer than yours.

Basically, if you don't need to upgrade to DX9, don't do it unless you can find new hardware and drivers to support the new code.

While the others are giving you good honest answers, they may not have Windows XP Pro like you indicate.

Since you have Windows XP Pro there is absolutely no reason why you shouldn't try DX9a as soon as possible. Windows XP pro allows you to set restore points before you install anything, and that includes DX9a. Then if you don't like it, you can just hit your restore point, and you'll be rid of DX9a.

I use DX9a with Windows XP Pro with no problems at all, and I did notice a frame rate increase.

upgraded my thinkpad laptop to dx9 (deff not a dx graph card on it :D ) and i have had no problems with it, and no benefits either.

I have DX9 too, with allot older system then yours. it runs, but not without trouble.
I also lost the ability to transmit voice, but that was long after i installed DX9. I actually still have that problem.

For those that have lost voice transmit, go into to windows and check your recording settings, when you install DX9 it turns off the microphone and turn on the line input.  You have to uncheck the line input box and check the microphone box.  If you have the line input box checked it overrides the microphone and you get no audio out, everybody will see you trying to transmit but will not receive any audio as it will be tranmitting the line input which is silent.
