Read in a paper today (forget which one) about 4 British tourists, skiiing in the French Alps, were attacked by a group of Frenchmen who got out of a car armed with baseball bats and decided that these guys were to blame for Tony Blair being a tosser. The attack resulted in a fractured skull for one of the Brits.
EDIT: found a link (http://www.thesun.co.uk/article/0,,2-2003161848,00.html)

France
The following advisory for American travelers heading for France was compiled from information provided by the U.S. State Department, the Central Intelligence Agency, the U.S. Chamber of Commerce, the Food and Drug Administration, the Center for Disease Control and some very expensive spy satellites that the French don't know about. It is intended as a guide for American travelers only and no guarantee of accuracy is ensured or intended.
General Overview
France is a medium-sized foreign country situated on the continent of Europe, and is for all intensive purposes ****ing useless.
It is an important member of the world community, although not nearly as important as it thinks. It is bounded by Germany, Spain, Switzerland and some smaller nations of no particular consequence or shopping opportunities. France is a very old country with many treasures such as the Louvre and EuroDisney. Among its contributions to Western
civilization are champagne, Camembert cheese, the guillotine, and body odor. Although
France likes to think of itself as a modern nation, air conditioning is little used and it is next to impossible to get decent Mexican food. One continuing exasperation for American visitors is that the people willfully persist in speaking French, although many will speak English if
shouted at repeatedly.
The People
France has a population of 54 million people, most of whom drink and smoke a great deal, drive like lunatics, are dangerously over sexed and have no concept of standing patiently in a line. The French people are generally gloomy, temperamental, proud, arrogant, aloof and undisciplined; those are their good points. Most French citizens are Roman Catholic, although you'd hardly guess it from their behavior. Many people are Communists and topless sunbathing is common. Men sometimes have girls' names like Marie and they kiss each other when they hand out medals.
American travelers are advised to travel in groups and to wear baseball caps and colorful pants for easier mutual recognition. All French women have small tits, and don't shave their armpits or their legs.
Safety
In general, France is a safe destination, although travelers are advised that France is occasionally invaded by Germany. By tradition, the French surrender more or less at once and, apart from a temporary shortage of Scotch whisky and increased difficulty in getting baseball scores and stock market prices, life for the visitors generally goes on much as before. A tunnel connecting France to Britain beneath the English Channel has been opened in recent years to make it easier for the French government to flee to London.
History
France was discovered by Charlemagne in the Dark Ages. Other important historical figures are Louis XIV, the Huguenots, Joan of Arc, Jacques Cousteau and Charles de Gaulle, who was President for many years and is now an airport. The French armies of the past have had their tulips kicked by just about every other country in the world.
Government
The French form of government is democratic but noisy. Elections are held more or less continuously and always result in a run- off. For administrative purposes, the country is divided into regions, departments, districts, municipalities, cantons, communes, villages, cafes, booths and floor tiles. Parliament consists of two chambers, the Upper and Lower (although, con- fusingly, they are both on the ground floor), whose members are either Gaullists or communists, neither of whom can be trusted. Parliament's principal pre occupations are setting off atomic bombs in the South Pacific and acting indignant when anyone complains. According to the most current State Department intelligence, the current President is someone named Jacques. Further information is not available at this time.
Culture
The French pride themselves on their culture, although it is not easy to see why. All of their songs sound the same and they have hardly ever made a movie that you want to watch for anything except the nude scenes. Nothing, of course, is more boring than a French novel (except perhaps an evening with a French family.)
Cuisine
Let's face it, no matter how much garlic you put on it, a snail is just a slug with a shell on its back. Croissants, on the other hand, are excellent although it is impossible for most Americans to pronounce this word. American travelers are therefore advised to stick to cheeseburgers at McDonald's or the restaurants at the leading hotels such as Sheraton or Holiday Inn. Bring your own beer, as the domestic varieties are nothing but a poor excuse for such.
Economy
France has a large and diversified economy, second only to Germany's economy in Europe, which is surprising since people hardly ever work at all. If they are not spending four hours dawdling over lunch, they are on strike and blocking the roads with their trucks and tractors.
France's principal exports, in order of importance to the economy, are wine, nuclear weapons, perfume, guided missiles, champagne, high-caliber weaponry, grenade launchers, land mines, tanks, attack aircraft, miscellaneous armaments and cheese.
Conclusion
France enjoys a rich history, a picturesque and varied landscape and a temperate climate. In short, it would be a very nice country if French people didn't inhabit it, and it weren't still radioactive from all the nuclear tests they run. The best thing that can be said for it is that it is not Spain. Remember no one ordered you to go abroad.
Personally, we always take our vacation in Miami Beach and you are advised to do the same.
-
lets just say they didnt like our Tony much.
ah ok, then my guess was right, "strong leader for peace through strength" :)
-
wow you normally hear about that kind of crap comming out of the good ole U.S.A.. I hope those brits sue them good.(hey guess what their medical costs will get picked up by the french government at least, god bless semi-socialism)

I say we send the Coalition to the France for a "Vacation" after Iraq is overwith.

YOU SEEM TO HAVE A PROBLEM WITH FREE SPEECH ROY.
It's all a joke man.
I apologize but only if you're french.
-
... intensive purposes
lolololol
-
Too many people condeming an entire country for what the politicians are doing/saying.
How would you like to be linked to your countries politicians and have that be the standard by which you are personally judged?
While I will back Bush, I have absolutely no desire to be judged using him as the measure.
-
I have no problem with free speech, but it does not apply here in any way, shape, form, or fashion.
-
again i ask the question on how you could allow a tread on russian soldiers complete with pictures getting there throats cut but not allow my post? I would hate for some of the very young player 10-15 year olds to see those pic's.
-
free speech applies EVERYWHERE IN AMERICA!!!
-
Those pics are not and have not been in that thread for quite some time.
-
Free speech does not apply here. This is a privately owned and operated bulletin board.

Swoop, my apologies for the hijack.

for weeks Americans had to Indore our country getting slammed by those from other countries and nothing was done!
Now i make some humor and I'm the bad guy?
Pleeeeeeez.
Be like me Skuzzy have another beer and the world will be all right again LOL.
Ps I get you're point I just respectfully disagree.
You're house you're rules.

ok look, I try not to make sweeping statements about the French because of course I realise that everyone is an individual, every country has it's stunninghunks and every country contains people I'd probably call friend if met in the right circumstances. There are a few Frenchmen in this world I actually quite like. In fact if you look waaaaaay back in my family tree you'll even find a Frenchman....um....well ok, Norman, slightly different but not much.
But there's a **** load of people in Britain who dont think like me........
See, what a lot of people seem to forget is that the French are the Enemy. Yes it does warrant a capital E. I mean sure, we've had little spats with the Germans and the Italians and the Argies, etc, but over the coarse of British history we've been at war with France, for one reason or another, longer than any other nation has been at war with anyone. Period. We've had wars that lasted decades......I'm talking three generations here. The French used to cut the fingers off English longbowmen if captured in battle. That's where the two fingered salute stems from (wont mean much to a yank but the Brit's know what I mean). See? Fighting France is embedded in British culture.
These yobs who've taken it upon themselves to beat up some British tourists have no idea what they just started.........

Not at all !
I happend to like Skuzzy very much.
I respect the work he does at HTC and being as where in the same town I would enjoy buying him a beer sometime.
To disagree is not to dislike!!!
-
Ok mybe this is better.
How bout get some british Rugby players to go to france and kick thie crap out of those cheese eating little frogs LOL.'
-
Or Fire in a theatre.
Seriously, though. Although I respect the house rules Skuzzy, RC was just making a joke. There has been some serious cracks made about the USA by alot of foreigners on this board and I don't see them getting a warning.
I mean, just look at half the tripe some of these Russians have been posting about the AMERICAN PEOPLE, and her soldiers.
I'm sure I missed something here, Skuzzy, as I know your very even handed, and have a high tolerance.
I just thought it was a good natured joke. Creative, funny, and not that vicious.
Someone make up a travel advisory for the USA. I'll laugh at that too.
Do we really have to go the "Politically Correct" root here too? I really hope not.

Sometimes i'm about as PC as a fart in church.
Sorry to offend.

Muck,..he started a thread with that post, then posted that post in here twice. I was just talking about the spamming of the post.
My follow on was just concern that people, regardless of the nation, are lumping what politicians do/say and proclaiming a whole civilization is lousy.
NOTE: I did not say anything about any specific country, as I do mean for it to be applied to all.
-
ok ok pissing contest over!
by the way Skuzzy how far up the wall did you get LOL.
Let grab a beer sometime my treat!

Swoop I've read the article and I'm pretty shocked :(
Have you any idea why they :
The British lads did not report the attack to police.
As said in the article.
How can an inquiry be started without their help ?.

Here in the States, I think the Sun is like the Enquirer, and the Weekly World News. I don't think it's the same "Sun", which is why I asked.
Skuzzy, I figured I missed something, which is why I asked. Thanks for the Clarification.

Firstly this is a report in The Sun. Yes, the paper that proudly markets itself to the lowest common denominator and has been on so many band-wagons it hasn't had its feet on terra firma for years.
The only good thing is page 3, and that's not really good value, because you can buy the Sport which has much more tits and not quite as much bollocks in it.
Secondly, Britain is hardly an idyl of tolerance, peace and open mindedness. I feel far safer in a Zaragoza night-club or at any time of night than I do in Hillsborough high street at 2am. Random acts of violence for nothing at all are frequent - only last month a guy was beaten half to death outside a pub I go to for apparently looking at a guy the wrong way. Fractured pelvis, fractured skull and ruptured spleen. I've stopped drinking around there - it's simply ridiculous.
Then there are the BNP sponsored attacks on ethnic minorities, assylum seekers and the like.
People joke about the French, sure. But that's about it. France isn't my enemy. The people who commit wanton acts of racist violence are my enemy, and we should construct a large catapult on the cliffs of Dover to cast them into the sea with. They go around talking about how British they are and how every one else simply doesn't measure up to there inflated sense of self-worth. They aren't my countrymen.

A long time ago, Britain and France were at war. During one battle, The
French captured an English major. Taking the major to their headquarters,
the French general began to question him. The French general asked, "Why do
you English officers all wear red coats? Don't you know the red material
makes you easier targets for us to shoot at?"
In his bland English way, the major informed the general that the reason
English officers wear red coats is so that if they are shot, the blood won't
show and the men they are leading won't panic. And that is why from that day
to now all French Army officers wear brown pants

You know what swoop i was thinking exactly the same thing.
Relations could be damaged by the small minority of british or french who will viciously attack people in the name of revenge. No doubt causing less people to travel much like when we had so much trouble in Europe with the large groups of organised Football fans causing small riots almost.
Things like this im sure are just the idiots of the world proving themselves but it can cause great damage to our relations with France. This artcle really pissed me off i must say. I certainly dont intend to attack some innocent frenchman as revenge but there are too many idiots over here that wouldnt think twice about doing crap like that.
Sad as it is to withhold information, I think things like this should be kept quiet if it appears to be an isolated incident. It doesnt take much to get people fired up and we would be better off not knowing. Its a bloody cowardly attack and they WILL be sorry for it.I just hope not too many non aggresive people get caught up in all the crap that ensues.

Well the only reason I can think of is that the attacked British decided that after this incident all the French can go screw themselves......I'd probably be kinda anti-French if this happend to me.
And if Wilfred is right they're probably planning a return trip with the rest of the rugby squad.

Despite what the Poofer thinks, the Sun does actually report real news like other main stream papers in the UK. It's not a national enquirer clone. The reason Dowd has a low opinion of the paper is due to the Sun's writers generally always having an "opinion" on things which seem to match the current popular opinions of the papers reader base......ie they pander to the general plebs and definately *will* jump on any bandwaggon around to sell more copies.
Still no reason to discount the authenticity of the story though......although curiously I havnt found another link from any other news source yet. Not that it matters cos most the Sun's reader base will believe every word without question anyway.

Yeah see this is what I'm worried about.
I dont think it's a good time to visit Paris......or, if you've got the slightest French accent (Belgians are screwed here), to visit London.
Hopefully there'll be no other incidents but I can already hear the roars at the next BNP / National Front meeting (for yanks, kinda like the KKK only more violent and without the laundry bills).

According to our law it would be mostly for 24 hours (24 can be added)
If their stupid enougth to have drug it would be 4 days ...
They will see their lawyer after 1 hour "garde à vue"
You can find a complete document here : http://vosdroits.service-public.fr/ARBO/1412-NXJUS510.html

however, they still have to get caught first.

The only time I visited london (in 1987) having a French accent was dangerous if you were alone...
At least I knocked down the 2 idiot facing me ...
Thre real funny part was when the bobbies spanked them again when arriving ...

I don't doubt it happened Swoop, I just doubt any other information given after the 'who, what, where, when'. And I'm not even convinced by the 'who' part, as Wilfred describes.
The Sun is good for a laugh, but should never be taken seriously. The Sport is far better, IMO. It has no desire to look like a 'news' paper.

Umm... don't be daff. It was a joke.
I guess the idea of the French using sporting equipment from America's sport to beat some Brits is just a bit too much to read and believe at this particular time.
