Fan Attacks Umpire at Baseball Game
The Associated Press
Tuesday, April 15, 2003; 11:30 PM
CHICAGO - A fan came out of the stands during Tuesday night's game between the Kansas City Royals and Chicago White Sox and attacked first base umpire Laz Diaz. Security and players came to Diaz's aid and the fan was quickly taken away.
Immediately after Carlos Lee flied out to right to end the eighth inning, the fan ran on the field and tried to tackle Diaz, wrapping his arms around the umpire's legs.
It was the first appearance by the Royals in Chicago since coach Tom Gamboa was pummeled by a father and son who came out of the stands last September.
Three times earlier Tuesday night, the game was delayed when fans ran onto the field before being tackled by security guards.
U.S. Cellular Field, formerly Comiskey Park, will host the All-Star game July 15.
Before the game, Gamboa tried to downplay his return to the field where he was attacked seven months ago.
"I haven't given it a thought really," Gamboa said. "Lightning doesn't strike twice."
Gamboa, who was the Royals' first base coach when he was attacked last Sept. 19, is now Kansas City's bullpen coach. Gamboa, 55, still has a minor hearing loss in his right ear following the beating.
The boy, 15 at the time, was sentenced to five years of probation and also ordered to undergo mandatory counseling and perform 30 hours of community service.
The boy was arrested along with his father, William Ligue Jr., who initially pleaded innocent to charges of aggravated battery and mob action. The case is still pending.
Gamboa, a former coach with the Cubs, said Chicago sports fans shouldn't be judged by what happened to him.
"It's a great sports city and no one incident or what two guys did would tarnish that," Gamboa said.
"It's over and done with as far as I'm concerned."

wouldn't mind seeing the beer go bye bye at football games either - usually brings out the "best" in a person..

While alcohol is a problem, the larger problem is culture.
Just see how differently the alcohol culture is in Sweden and Denmark.
Alcohol doesn't hit people - people hit people!
'Tis true :).
-
Actually the father and son duo was on meth amphetamines .
And I'm not ashamed to say that I found it enternaining. Bring on the all drug olympics !

"The boy, 15 at the time, was sentenced to five years of probation and also ordered to undergo mandatory counseling and perform 30 hours of community service. "
ooooooooooohhhh, probation and counseling. That's going to really teach him a lesson.
Doesn't Illinois have juvenile detention facilities?

Alcohol doesn't hit people - people hit people!
brilliant!

why stop drinking when you can just enforce the laws we already have...
Way I see it thats battery and that handsomehunk should be tried as such... No "I was under the influence defense"
He should go serve at least 3 days for that attack... Not to mention civil action against his estate as far as im concerned..
Kimmel had it right last night talking about this incident. He said this guy will sue the players for ruffing him up a bit... get a settlement and in ten years from now crash into someones house at 100mph...
on a side note...
Don King is a murderer yet he's not behind bars... Note his Slogan "Only in America.."
The irony of the american justice system is appalling... Victimless crimes fill our jails full (at 30k per inmate) and freaking rapist murderers and other miscreants run rabid on streets... or in this case our baseball parks...
Food for thought...

Same ball field, same coaching position... I almost wonder if there isn't a design problem in that section of the stands. Maybe there's a gate there that needs to be locked? Is it too easy to climb over a railing there?

Whoever wakes them up now.
In all seriousness, when I was a kid, the bleachers were a zoo, but no one ever rushed the field and attacked anyone(they attacked each other in the bleachers)
It's a shame that a few nitwits are going to ruin things for everyone else. Getting close to the field is one of the best parts of going to a game. We would go early and go down to field level and try to get autographs. Then later in the game as people in the front row left, we would work our way down to the better seats. What you are going to see is they are going to keep people away from the front rows, other than those who have a ticket to be there. And the reason why they haven't done it yet is that it is bad for business, they want a fan friendly environment. I hope it doesn't come to that.

You're right. We should all take the advice of the Brits in sporting situations, particularly in situations regarding Belgium and soccer.
They are SUCH a wonderful example to follow.  :p
Lovely high moral ground there Dowding.

Gamboa requested to the judge and prosecutor that the kid not be locked up. He feels that the idiot father was the one primarily responsible.

Yeah - the players should have dragged him into the under-stadium passageways before ruffing him up - now he'll have all the ammo he needs on film!
But seriously, any justice system where when you own a business you have to put fences around your trees to prevent some child who's parents aren't supervising him from climbing the tree, falling out, breaking his neck, then suing you for having an "attractive nuisance" needs to have something fixed!

lol Maverick - I'm taking the piss out of the kind of reaction Eagler would post. That's certainly not taking any kind of moral high ground.

Time to authorize lethal force for on field security personnel. Eventually one of these crazies is going to be armed and is going to put somebody in the hospital or worse. Time to start making examples.

it could be worse.... you could have the players doing this to fans :)

Hehe Furball...we did...the Boston Bruins (Hockey). Can't remember what year exactly...maybe '79 or so.
Terry O'Reilly and a couple Bruins went up into the crowd at a game and pummelled a fan who was throwing keys at them.

Royals Threaten Not to Play in Chicago
1 hour, 45 minutes ago Add Sports - AP to My Yahoo!
By RICK GANO, AP Sports Writer
CHICAGO - The Kansas City Royals (news) will not play Wednesday night's game against the Chicago White Sox (news) unless security at the stadium is improved, general manager Allard Baird said.
Just seven months after Kansas City coach Tom Gamboa was assaulted by a father and son who'd run on the same field, another fan at the Chicago White Sox's home park shockingly attacked first base umpire Laz Diaz on Tuesday night.
The fan entered the field not far from where Gamboa had been surprised and then pummeled in the first base coach's box last September.
"We spoke about it in the locker room, this is where Tom Gamboa got attacked. We thought nothing was going to happen, but it was a full moon out there," Diaz said.
"He just grabbed me by my waist and that's when I turned him around and got him down ... and everybody jumped on him."
Meanwhile, the Royals must be assured "that things have been upgraded where we can feel comfortable to where we can take the field," Baird told the Kansas City Star. "Otherwise we won't take it. I'm worried about my manager, my staff and my players — period. But I do feel for the families who came out to the game."
On Wednesday, Royals spokeswoman Chris Stathos said the team would report to the stadium and decide at game time whether to play.
Known as Comiskey Park when Gamboa was attacked, the facility is now called U.S. Cellular Field after a $68 million naming rights deal was reached before the season.
As the host for this July's All-Star game, the stadium has already undergone a major sprucing up. Now it has a black eye, its safety record questioned by yet another ugly attack at a Royals-White Sox game.
"As a major league baseball player, you shouldn't have to worry about your health on the baseball field from the fans," Kansas City star Mike Sweeney (news) said. "When they come on the field to do harm, that's when it gets scary."
Immediately after Carlos Lee flied out to end Chicago's eighth inning, a man ran on the field and tried to tackle Diaz.
Security and players rushed to the aid of the 40-year-old Diaz, who served in the U.S. Marine Corps Reserve. The fan was quickly taken away and Diaz, who was not hurt, finished the game.
"When I looked over, there was one of the fans from the stands and I just got him off me," Diaz said. "I just turned around and got him off me. The good hand-to-hand combat they taught me worked."
Police spokesman Wayne Frisbie said investigators wanted to talk with Diaz before deciding whether to file charges against the man. He remained in police custody Wednesday.
Frisbie said the man, who has not been identified, was treated for minor injuries at St. Anthony's Hospital in Chicago.
Several Royals players could be seen kicking and stomping the fan while he was pinned down. When the attacker was put into a police car, his head was wrapped with a white bandage, soaked with blood near the right temple.
Royals right fielder Brandon Berger, who caught the ball for the final out of the inning, was one of the first to reach Diaz.
"You catch the ball, you look down and a guy's getting tackled and it's like, 'What's going on?'" Berger said.
Eerily, it was the first appearance by the Royals in Chicago since Gamboa, then Kansas City's first base coach, was attacked last Sept. 19
Now the Royals' bullpen coach, Gamboa said he thought security was tighter for his team's return. He felt safe — at least before the game.
"Oh yeah, the assistant to major league security was at the game tonight. He told me before the game that they had beefed up the security, but the fans will always outnumber the security force, so there is only so much they can do," Gamboa said.
"I think people just have too much to drink," he added.
Kevin Hallinan, baseball's security head, was in San Francisco when he learned of the attack. He was on his way to Chicago to investigate.
"I'm going to be meeting with all concerned," he said. "I spoke with Diaz and he did say he thought security got out there in a hurry."
And the attack on Diaz wasn't the only problem involving rowdy spectators. It was just the most brazen.
Earlier, Tuesday night's game was delayed three times when fans ran onto the field before being tackled by security guards. All three were charged with trespassing, the White Sox said.
Frisbie said all three were charged with misdemeanor criminal trespass to land. He identified them as Jeffrey Adams, 25; Albert Skutnik, 25; and Tom Skutnik, 20, all of Chicago.
"I don't know how it is when other teams are in town, but it seems like every time we are here, something crazy happens," Sweeney said. "Maybe they should bring more police in or put up some high fences so fans don't get on the field."
The White Sox said it was the actions of a few who don't represent their true fans.
"The behavior of four people attending tonight's game was reprehensible and will not be tolerated," the team said in a statement. "They will be prosecuted to the fullest extent the law allows."
The 55-year-old Gamboa still has a minor hearing loss in his right ear from last year's attack.
The boy, 15 at the time, was sentenced to five years of probation and also ordered to undergo mandatory counseling and perform 30 hours of community service.
He was arrested along with his father, William Ligue Jr., who initially pleaded innocent to charges of aggravated battery and mob action. The case is still pending.
After the attack on Diaz, the Royals scored four runs in the top of the ninth for an 8-5 win — their 11th victory in 12 games.
Sweeney hit a two-run homer to put the Royals ahead. Albie Lopez (news) (2-0) won and Billy Koch (1-1) lost after blowing the save.
The benches emptied in the first when Miguel Asencio hit Chicago's Frank Thomas (news) with a pitch for the second time this season. No punches were thrown.
Thomas homered in the eighth to give the White Sox a 5-4 lead

I was at a Mariner's game last year and a fan ran onto the field naked. A hairy redhead man. It was much more horrifying than this incident.

Good idea. Let's penalize 30,000-40,000 people for the conduct of 3-4. That's how this country ended up with a 21 drinking age.

It was against the rangers in New York. O'rielly, Mcnabb, and Milbury went up into the stands. Milbury took the guy's shoe off and started beating him with it. I'm hoping to see that game on ESPN classic:D

Penalize?
are you penalized if you can't purchase booze?
isn't it against the law to drink in public? isn' a stadium or ball park a public place?
they can get smashed b4 the game, as many tailgaters do, sober up during the game and head to the bar after .... it'd make the line in the restrooms shorter too..
never happen though ... $$$$ - nothing to do with your "penalized" beer guzzlin rights - if no boooze made more cash, it'd be so.
-
Damn right it's penalized. I have the right to drink whatever the hell I want. It's my body, keep off.
-
Baseball is boring as toejam, the only redeeming quality it has is the ability to get toejamfaced at the game.
Any sport is that way for that matter, "you want me to sit in this crappy uncomfortable piece of plastic and eat your crappy arnold food and watch this long arnold game?"
It's much cheaper to do it from the comfort of your couch and your TV, not to mention the benefit of eating REAL food instead of processed entrails (hotdogs) or microwaveable pizza.

No, there is nothing better than watching England draw 0-0 at home to Sweden, whilst sitting with the neo-nazi contingent of English fans.
I learnt a few new swearwords that afternoon.
My local team is crap, but very occasionally they win, and that's a great atmosphere to be in.
-
Well, a bar is a public place too, or a place to eat that serves. If you are sitting down eating at your favorite restaurant, and some drunk fool attacks you, do you demand they stop serving at restaurants? Of course not. An irresponsible drunk is going to act like that no matter what the venue.
-
It's all about personal responsibility.

Each city establishes its own ordinances for drinking in public. Davis, CA (at least when I went to school there about 5 years ago) allows the public to drink anywhere on the street. Only a few public park areas have restrictions, and they are well posted.

No, a stadium or ball park is not a public place. Nor is a bar or restaurant.
Am I penalized if a can't buy a beer at a sporting event because that venue has cut off sales because a couple of idiots ran onto the field? I would say yes.
Remember the earlier post about the hunter that accidentally killed his neighbor? If that state/country outlawed hunting because of that one idiot, am I being penalized? I would say yes.
If your state outlawed operating a motor vehicle because Rodney King drove his car into a house, are you being penalized? I would say yes.

Sixpence,
I laugh everytime I see that clip. Hehe..forgot about Milbury. Man, did those guys scale that plexiglass in a hurry. And climbed those stairs in their skates like lightning!
The Bruins need that kind of hockey back at the Fleet Center in a big way! And some goal tending and some offense, and some checking........
-
I believe the law already covers these acts.....so why ban alcohol?

I'm afraid things have changed since you left, everyone has become disenchanted(spell?) with the bruins. Jacops and sinden basically told the fans shut up and watch what we give you. People are getting fed up with an out of town owner who could care less about winning.
The Patriots are the talk of the town now. It's a year round thing. Gonna have a draft get together at a friends house down in weymouth. The new stadium is awesome. They are going to have training camp at the new stadium too. They will be open to the public. Got a few squadm8s that are local, gonna try to get together for a night practice.
And we will be drinking<-------added to prevent hijack

Was this the ESPN footage where a guy ran out mimicking a special Olympian, fell at the feet of a black umpire that looked to be well over 200 lbs and athletic if just not huge in comparison, and was pummeled by several professional ball players before the ump realized someone was flopping at his feet?
Had the ump not been looking at the catch, he would have just demolished the guy. Had he stepped back, he would have crushed him ending the drama without security.
And then to top it off, he was escorted off the field without any ill effects other than looking like a floundering fool, and emerged for the post event coverage covered in blood?
Yeah, ban alcohol.
2 things matter. That tool took a bellybutton whipping in private, and Eagler, God Bless You, but you really are the reason liberal rutabagas aren’t hated worse, cause there is always a militant conservative that screws it all up for the rest of us with reason.

Amazing, Eagler- we have- what, 30-50 thousand traffic fatalities a year from alcohol, our streets are full of drunk derelects, booze has ruined more lives than anything yet invented by man...but what FINALLY drives you over the top on this issue is one drunk a-hole staggering onto the field during a baseball game???
You could never be a good liberal Eagler because you just don't get it. True liberals have been asking for an alcohol ban for years- true liberals know it's the substance of abuse and not the substance of the person that creates sociatial problems- and true liberals would be searching for the reason this man ran onto the field.
Now go back to waxing your plastic pink flamingos while you drink a hi-ball. You might fool some others into believing you're compassionate, but I know deep down inside you were probably happy when that young man got his butt kicked on the field. You are just as mean as you ever were. Sheeeesh.
-
Yep whatever happened to personal accountability? It wasn't beer that made this guy run on the field. It was the fact that he's a ****ing idiot.
-
If there were no booze there would be no drunks. If there were no guns there would be no gun crimes.
I don't blame the drunks and the shooters- I blame America for not treating the cause of our problems but instead treats the symptoms of our problems.
-
That said, I don't really mind if they run on the field between innings. Just as long as it doesn't delay the game. :)
One time at an A's game we had a very fit and athletic guy come on to the field from next to the third base dugout, wearing nothing but shorts and running shoes. He took off down the first base line and tore around the bases at full speed. Reminded me of old films of Willie Mays. Anyways the fat security guards couldn't catch him, so they tried to wait for him on the third base line, but he hurdled one of them (who was diving), broke a leg tackle attempt by another one, then made a perfect hook slide to beat the last one. Then he jumped up in celebration and went off peacefully in handcuffs. Crowd went nuts, standing O. :)

That's just it, people would rather make excuses than be responsible for their actions. I like going out to eat, having a drink, relaxing and having conversation. It's a good time. Why should that be taken away from me because of someone else who exercises poor judgement?
Why not I.D. these people? You have to show I.D. to drink. Why not put something on it to I.D. people like the one who ran onto the field. If you are convicted of drunk driving, or and act in public due in part to drinking, why not put something on their I.D. that prevents them from being served in a public venue? Just a thought.

Did you know there's more plastic lawn flamingos in Tampa, Florida than there is people? There's also many cases of drunk plastic flamingo fans charging lawn flamingos and attempting to tackle them. Fortunately the average drunk flamingo fan isn't as tough as a well constructed plastic flamingo, so Eagler's lawn, complete with his fake wishing well, planters of phony plants and three dozen plastic lawn flamingos are all safe.
