Title: Blitzkrieg
Post by: XNachoX on April 20, 2003, 05:04:06 PM
Anyone in Germany/UK got this game yet?  I think it's the best RTS since C&C: Red Alert.  I believe it's made from the same guys that did the Sudden Strike series.  Very fun game....http://www.cdv-blitzkrieg.com for the demo and more screenshots.  The community is top notch and I believe I saw Saurdaukar there.

3 screenshots of mine:

Having moved my artillery into my newly aquired town I am now laying siege to my next objective.  My tanks and infantry are placed in position to move in after bombardment, sadly I lost 2 of my S-35 battle tanks to enemy StugIII's.

After entrenching my tanks I amass my troops preparing to rush.

Aftermath Of An Attack

Destruction of the village leaves me with 2, very welcomed, 105mm German howitzers. I used them to siege troops held up in houses so I could save men and tanks.

Misty tales and poems lost
All the bliss and beauty will be gone
Will my weary soul find release for a while
At the moment of death I will smile
It's the triumph of shame and disease

Nice, but once I played Combat Mission: Barbarossa to Berlin, RTS just doesn't cut it for me anymore.

Looks good for a quick blast though, and I like the graphics.

Tis not like every other RTS.  You are alotted a certain amount of troops and must use high ground, tactics/strategy to overcome greater numbers, etc. give the demo a shot :)

Try the demo.

Edit: Troops can hold up inside of houses, storm houses with other troops in it where they'll fight inside.  A true penetration model is used to determine whether each round grazes the armor, makes dead on contact and penetrates it, etc.  Troops are also able to use AT rifles.  They can also de-track a tank using grenades.  Troops and tanks must be resupplied with ammo and you can use your troops to take over enemy artillery, AT guns, AA guns, etc. for your personal use.  Tactics are essential as you are only alloted a certain amount of tanks and troops and you never know if you'll be given re-inforcements.  One mission I had to use my sniper to take out the crew of 2 British 25cm light howitzers and use my few precious tanks/men to take out a trench filled with men.  Elevation is almost essential in staving off a hard nosed offensive.  I was able to call in air support to carpet bomb an artillery position that was decimating my unit, and if you need to you can call in a paradrop behind enemy lines to flank them.  I find it's just an amazing game.  Totally mod-able.  The makers created it to be mod friendly and there's always a modern war conversion in the works.

To me it is 100% better than CDV's previous incarnation of Sudden Strike ever thought of being. Blitzkrieg seems like it actually takes attrition into account and also seems like it moves on a little slower time frame unlike Sudden Strike.

Looks (and sounds) too much like Sudden Strike II for me to waste my money on it.

The German campaign is a very fun, and sometimes frustrating experience.  They're superior tanks are often met by fierce resistance from AA and AT guns that are able to take them out very swiftly.  I had just taken out an ambush of 4 AT guns perched on a hillside with a group of paratroopers that I used to flank them.  I've now moved down the road and deeper into enemy territory....
Base Of Operations
(http://r1329776.hostultra.com/images/Blitzkrieg4.jpg)
Having set-up my artillery I'm now in the process of preparing an urban town for invasion.  The 105mm heavy artillery guns are bombarding an area where reconnaissance planes have reported where 3 AT guns and several households of British troops reside.  The troops are nervous, rarely have they fought in a city environment and dangers await them around every corner.

Begun, It Has
(http://r1329776.hostultra.com/images/Blitzkrieg5.jpg)
Artillery has done its' job in knocking out the troops which manned the once dangerous AT guns.  Troops are pouring into the city and taking over abandoned guns along the way.  Just as expected they are meeting resistance from houses as the British try valiantly to defend their town.  After 5 minutes of intense action we have taken over the town and gained two Bofors 40mm anti-aircraft guns, and 3 two-pounder AT guns.  I radio back to HQ: Eastern Front, Secure.

Resistance
(http://r1329776.hostultra.com/images/Blitzkrieg6.jpg)
I meet light resistance along the path to the western front, where I must build a bridge in-order to secure the other half of the town.  My tanks and artillery made quick work of this small house of British troops.

The Final Push
(http://r1329776.hostultra.com/images/Blitzkrieg8.jpg)
The bridge is built and troops are pouring across the bridge only to meet a hailstorm of British AT guns!  Artillery is being moved into position to engage, meanwhile our troops take considerable losses by the fast-firing Bofors.  As artillery zeros in the troops inch foward closer, and closer to the goal.

Just like Combat Mission, I just don't get it. I try mind you, but miss how to get immersed in these type of games. I even got into Empire Earth for weeks, but the interest goes away. Pry because they are way involved in strat I don't understand.

I also would like to be able to rotate, scroll, zoom in and out, which I didn't figure out how to do in Blitz.

It' looked like a really good game.  They sent me beta info on it awhile ago.  Maybe a year.  I'm pissed at cdv, though, so I wouldn't buy it.
