Groom Shot in Head During Wedding

NEW DELHI (Reuters) - An Indian groom is in a coma in hospital after he was accidentally shot in the head by a friend who was celebrating the wedding by firing into the air, police said on Tuesday.

Software engineer Tapesh Kumar Singh, 22, was sitting next to his bride when his friend shot him with a revolver at the alcohol-laden wedding bash on the outskirts of New Delhi on Sunday, Superintendent of Police Vijay Bhushan said.

"It was a tragic accident and very unusual. The whole incident was filmed on video and we are using this as evidence," Bhushan told Reuters.

Singh's friend, who had been firing shots in the air to celebrate the wedding, has been arrested for causing grievous injury by negligence, Bhushan said.

Some people in India, especially in the country's north, fire in the air to celebrate weddings or the birth of a son.

About a year ago, there was a Pakistani wedding where someone tried to fire off a mortar.  Put the round in upside down and killed something like 8 people, including the groom.

Some traditions don't last for a reason.

I have never been able to understand the desire to shoot into the air to celebrate....don't they know the golden rule "What goes up must come down?"

People are nuts.

Anyone see that footage of the Iraqis preparing their street corner defences? One old guy was cleaning his AK-47. The only problem was that it had a full magazine in it, the safety was off and as he was polishing it, he pulled the trigger. Luckily it was pointing skyward.

Guns and stupid people should not mix.

Sounds like there must have been some Iraqi military advisors in India.

They should celebrate French style instead.  Just throw the guns on the ground and run around.

Apparently it had happened before, the guy himself just calmly continued cleaning his AK and the one next to him seemed moderately surprised at best. Some people just never learn...

Would have been Darwin if he had shot himself, instead he just shot the groom.

Kid that went to my highschool was killed in Iraq one day after he arrived in country.

Cause of death?  The paper said "Non-Combat related weapon discharge."

What happened?  He decided to clean his rifle while it was loaded.

Very sad... but unreal that after Basic, Infantry, and PMOS he still didnt get weapon safety beat into him.

When I was a kid a girl in my class was watching some boys play with a bow and arrows. I guess they were seeing how high it would go if they shot it straight up. Got her dead smack in the eye.

She made it back to classes about a year later. You could actually see a chunk of her iris was missing.

Weird huh.

Not long after that I found a broken arrow. I sharpend it up and shot it out of my wrist rocket(sling shot)....right into my thumb.

Stupid huh?

I disagree.

I think stupid people and guns should mix as often as possible.  How do you think we've managed to keep their numbers as low as we have :D

How does one clean a loaded gun ? Seems like the cartridge would get in the way .

The guy was polishing the outside of his AK, to make it all shiny and pretty like.

Remember when the PLO left Beriut? and hundreds of them where firing into the air as they drove out to the boats.
I cant remember the numbers but I recall a few people were killed in that little act of manhood.

Just an FYI.

The AK-47 and its varients (at least the ones I have fired, mostly Chinese copies, Mak-90's), do not have a safety in the western sense.

There is a large lever on the right side of the receiver, made out of stamped metal.  This lever when in the "up" position blocks the action of the bolt, by simply being in the way of the bolt cocking handle, and will not allow it to move to the rear.  Thats all there is.

So, if there is a round in the chamber, the AK-47 is "hot" and ready to fire.  Regardless of the saftey position, the presence of a magazine, or anything else.  Its designed to be a very simple gun to manufacture, so it lacks many of the "Niceties" of western firearms.

All of the AK's (47s, 74s) that Ive shot (Polish, Soviet, Hungarian, etc... alot of em) werent like this at all - when the safety was engaged (moved from single or auto to safe on the right) that trigger was locked.

Sure the one you fired wasnt broken?

Not unless they were all broken, and the AK47 manual that I read was wrong as well.
