Title: U.S.S. Indianapolis-what really happened?
Post by: davidpt40 on April 22, 2003, 09:36:05 PM
900 men went into the water, 5 days later only 317 came out.

I've heard all different things.  Some people say sharks killed the majority of the sailors.  Others said dehydration or drowning was the main cause of death.  Anyone have any information on this ?

I've read and seen alot of different things. From what I've gathered the majority where from injuries sustained and simple drowning. However, I gather a great number of them where indeed attacked by sharks. That the sharks in that area already had a noterious reputation.

Hypothermia was probably the biggest killer, Sharks a close 2nd. Even in 80* water it only takes a short time for the body's core temp to drop low enough to cause seizures and unconciousness.
If you have ever seen a group of sharks in a feeding frenzy, you can just imagine how many men met their fate that way.
