Title: Instant Messenger
Post by: RacrX on April 25, 2003, 03:41:10 PM
Not sure if this is the right place to post this.

I am getting hit by 12-30 Instant messages a night on Roadrunner (the bulk of them selling software to stop instant messages) and its pissing me off and Im sure its not helping my frame rate. Is there an easy, free, way to block my ISP from being broadcast??

Thanks,

RacrX

Turn off instant messenger completely while gaming. Right click on the icon on the taskbar down by the clock and select exit. It'll shut off IM so you won't get bugged. To restart IM you'll just have to log on again.

sounds like you got something installed unbeknownst to you.

take a look in control panel, those popup sales dickheads often install popup software on your machine when you're unawares, look in add/remove programs for crap you dont expect should be installed, odds are it'll even be named recognizably as such.

I dont mean AOL IM or anything like that, there is no icon and nothing is running in the background that I am aware of. Its just a gray box with no links or anything all you can do is close them.

I get this to from time to time.

Some anti-ad company has installed a hidden program that broadcasts your IP so more anti-ad ads can be sent to you.

A program I use and works good not to mention free is ADAWARE 6. Its a anti spy-ware program.

Do a google search for "Lavasoft Adaware" and download it.
Install it and run it I think you will be very suprised at how much spyware is on your computer.

I clean my history and internet history and defrag regularly and the first time I ran ADAWARE it found 180 hidden spyware programs on me PC.

I been running it for about 2 years now. Had Adaware 5 and updated it to 6.

It will help clean it out and speed you PC up.

I had this problem when I went to XP Pro, This is how I got rid of it. (This was from the Screen Saver's TV program  BTW).

Windows Tip: Stop XP's Messenger From Loading

Keep Windows XP's Messenger from loading every time you open Outlook.

Make Messenger go away

1. Go to your Programs folder.

2. Rename the Messenger folder to something new. ( I named mine  MessengerIHateYou ).  Messenger will no longer load when you open Outlook.

3. To get your Messenger back, just rename it back to Messenger and all will be restored.

or even better to remove MSN messenger all together.

go to start, run and copy/paste this line

RunDll32 advpack.dll,LaunchINFSection %windir%\INF\msmsgs.inf,BLC.Remove

then hit ok...

I use to get those annoying things when I switched over to Windows XP.
I read on this BB how to cure them, and several other problems that plague XP.
Here is the link, this is one of the most helpful sites around.

AdAware is a good start. Also back it up with Spybot.

Adaware

Spybot

Both are free

Guys, it's the messanger service, Daverino is right on the money.  In addition, you are running some sort of firewall right?  If not you'd better get one.  I prefer hardware solutions like netgear's rp614,  If you use that you don't need to turn off the messanger service.

A very quick solution to MSN Messenger in XP is to go into your registry, do a find for your "RUN" folder (two of them) and Simpley Delete the link for Messenger.

There will more than likely be a ton of other crap you might want to rid yourself of there as well
