Post by: Dowding on April 28, 2003, 11:43:24 AM
It rocks. I can only imagine what WW2OL would have been like if they had the backing these guys clearly had.

I'm connecting to their servers from the UK with a ping of 250ms and still enjoying large battles - spectacular to say the least.

Sci-fi of course, but a good blast all the same.

I tried signing up for beta, but the process was akin to jumping through hoops and I gave up after 10 minutes - perhaps I should give it another go considering all the good press about the game.

Whats the general concept?  WWIIOL with lasers and ****?

Yes. You basically get experience points and advance in levels gaining certification points. You then use these certs to 'learn' new skills such as hacking (to gain outposts and bases) or how to drive a tank, or quad or fighter or the troop carriers (airborne and GVs). You can even get a stealth suit that makes you invisible!

It's quite well balanced and there is always a need for different types of player to work together - such as pilot, grunt or powered armour (MAX) soldier. Engineers, hackers and medics are also required.

It's fun and frenetic and not very deep - ideal for light relief.

If you subscribe to file planet, you can download now and get in the beta!

That's how I got in.

Wow what an intense and incredible game Planetside (http://planetside.station.sony.com/) is. I was lucky enough to join the Sturmgrenadiers (http://www.sghq.com/ps/).
They have 300+ members so far in the beta. We're using TeamSpeak with many people divided  up into several squads and platoons. Wow what a great feeling to see 6 fully loaded Galaxies doing hot drops on TR bases. The battle of Itan will last with me for a long time.

The bugs and crashes can get iritating at times but they are constantly working to fix these. If you're interested in the beta, FilePlanet subscribers can download the beta right now. It's work being a subscriber for a month just to get in the beta.

I will look you up when I get home Dowding. I'm NC, what faction are you with?

Should be straight forward. The 'Station Name' thing is just membership to Sony's website.

Servers are down until 6pm central US time anyways. Might catch you guys at the weekend.

In the past days I've taken an interest in the game. Over the weekend I downloaded the game from fileplanet. I've curently got everything set up it's just when I start it up it gets to the Login Process screen and sits there with the "Authenicating" bar....then after a few minutes it says disconected. Little disheartened atm, any recommendations? Besides learning to type.

BEEFCAAAAAAKE!

Yeah, it's been doing that all day.  Seems their in the process of patching/updating the servers as we speak.

It was fine and dandy yesterday.  I'm waiting impatiently over here :D

Start a character on Markov of Dalton (thats where I'll be).  Go New Conglomerate and look for me!

Beefcake,

Sometimes the servers can be down for half a day while they patch and fix bugs. Usually by primetime they have the servers up. It's definetly worth the wait. I highly recommend getting in a dedicated PS squad. It makes the game 10x funner when you actually have coordination in the battles.

Our squad, Sturmgrenadier, started on the Dalton server because Smokejumper (Dev) told us it will have less lag then others because no de-bugging software is used on it. I'm 'Makarov' on Dalton.

Here are some screenshots I snapped last night. The reduced 800x600 doesn't do them justice. At 1280x1024 this game is a beaut:

You guys are kinda confusing my here. Last night I finaly got to play. I started a charater on Markov named "Beefcake" (what a surprise) and a little bit later I started a charater on Dalton named "Porkcake" (Beefcake was taken). Well here is my take on the game. Fun as hell....and will be much more fun when I figure out what the hell I'm doing and supposed to do. Last night I spent most of time wandering around aimlessly, though I did manage to find the training center and get some pratice with guns and vehicles. The game reminds me of Tribes only the in depth detail is amazing. I was blown away by the small fact that vehicles had trunks. I think I understand the basics but I'm still missing alot of info on what to do, maybe sometime we can get together in game and you guys can show me the ropes. I'll be on a little today and I'll be on tonight (after 10pm EST) after my college class. Oh and both of my chars are on the NC side.
Title: Planetside - anyone playing?
Post by: Octavius on April 29, 2003, 10:56:00 AM
Goodie!  There's something about the NC that I like... not sure why.

Beef, try out all the vehicles/guns.  You earn experience for training.  The "o" key tells ya information about your character.  Once you get a few certification points, you can head to a Cert terminal and "buy" or learn new certifications for different weapons and vehicles.  I made the mistake of buying armour and medium assault and no vehicles on one character.  Get some sort of transportation cert or find a squad because it's a REAL pain getting around on foot.  A reaver or mosquito gets the job done just fine.

Oh brother....first BF1942, now you guys are trying to get me hooked on Planteside. Don't you people realize I have a family to take care of! :D

Ok, so tell me, how much is this going to set me back to try? Is it going to be a monthly subscription like AH, or a box game like BF1942?
Title: Planetside - anyone playing?
Post by: Makarov9 on April 29, 2003, 11:40:27 AM
banana, yep it will probably be $12/month. You can give the beta a spin for free right now though. The game comnes out on May 19th. Warning...will be VERY addictive. Blows BF1942 out the water.

Beefcake, yes in the Sanctuary go to the training area and give all the weapons/vehicles a try. Give the Phoenix missle a try. You can guide it with your mouse after firing. Just like a TOW. :) As you kill things and take over bases you will gain Battle Experience Points (BEP) which will gain you ranks. Each rank gains you certs. Use the certs to add weapons, MAX armor, vehicles or Eng/Medic abilities to your character.

To get to other continents you can use the warp gates from Sanctuary or take the HART and to a hi-alt drop on the continent of your choosing. It takes a night or two to get use to things but it's well worth it.

Yeah it is confusing at first - it's grand in scale and there's loads to do.

Dowding, what is your favorite weapon so far? I primarily use the Rocklet. Great for up close and long range work. I tried the Jackhammer last night but unless your 5 feet from the guy it just isn't that handy/powerful.

akak you Terran scum. We will throw off your oppressive ways and bring freedom to the new world! Chaingun wielding varmint!

BR5 after playing 3 hours?!  My god I'm only BR4 and I've been playing 2 days!  Well, not 2 days straight...

Getting booted every 10 minutes doesn't help either I suppose.

What sort of performance do you guys get from this?  I get a ton of video stuttering upon entering the game.  Settings are really turned down too.

been playing the beta awhile now, br14 on citrine, TR all the way baby.   Name is Bumlooka.  Game has some issues but its fun as hell, some of the bridge battles on cyss, man o man thats just fun.   Problem is now EVERYONE is getting the boltdriver cert, massive counterstrike flashbacks here.

No way i could play barney or the smurfs.

I like the gauss gun thing, but that assault rifle grenade launcher is a lot of fun. On base defense, the MAX with the shotgun thing rocks. Single-handedly defended a base for 20 mins the other day - until 3 MAXs turned up!

Joined a small outfit last night. I'm a galaxy transport pilot, so we loaded one of those buggy-car things into the back and with 6 grunts in the back did some squad operations around the periphery.

This is one fun game.

Octavius, what system you running? I have a lowly 1.2 GHz Athlon with 512 MB RAM and a Geforce 2 Pro (64 MB). I have the game running at 1024x768 at 32 bit colour. I get slowdown in the the really huge battles - and I'm talking 60 people on screen. Otherwise, 90% of the time it's smooth. Frankly, I'm amazed it can be so good.

The graphics are pretty, it runs smoothly - why couldn't WW2OL have been like this, it would have rocked.

So do I.  I like how as a Terran Republic scout/sniper, I can use the gauss rifle as my secondary weapon.  While the rate of fire isn't as fast as the cycler is, the damage the gauss rifle rounds do more than make up for the slower firing rate.  I think all my weapons, other than the common pool bolt-driver, are either NC or Vanu and I've accumulated quite a large collection of rebel weapons.

Death to the rebel scum! Long live the glorious Terran Republic! :D

Tyrannical b'stard! :D

I want to get my hands on one of those Vanu lasers I've been sliced and diced with so often. I still haven't learnt all the weapons available on all sides.

I'm not sure what to get next with my certs. I have 3 points to spend - might invest in stealth suit. Or save up for a reaper certification.

How do you get implants out of interest? Some of them sound funky.

1.2gHz AMD, 384 ddram, Radeon 9500 pro.  Running at 1280x1024.  The FPS are great when the stuttering ceases.  Maybe its the ram?

I need an excuse to buy more.

Octavius, it's definetly the RAM. 512MB is the minimum you want for this game. For totally smooth play 1Gig is recomended. As you go from continent to continent it loads all the textures into RAM. The more you have the smoother the play.

Dowding, you grab implants in the same room you get the cert selections. Bio Lab and Sanc. Most people take Darklight to see the cloakers. I like the health one, that drains your stamina but props up your health when injured.

Yep Gauss is a good all-around weapon to use. Has good range and hits pretty hard.

lol!

"More RAM, more RAM! You must buy more RAM!"

Kind of reminds me of another game, which shall remain nameless. :D

But in this case it is definitely warranted - the developers state it as a minimum I believe.

There's supposed to be a major memory leak in the game that causes it to use up mass amounts of RAM.  Someone on the beta boards did a test and I think found out that at times the game wants to use 800+megs of RAM.

Hook up with a squad.  When you are part of a squad, no matter if you're the one that killed an enemy you will still get BEP from it.  The same thing with hacking, if you're in a squad and your squad succesfully hacks a base, everyone in the squad gets the BEPs and the squad leader also gets CEP (Command Experience Points).  You don't have to be in the base with the squad either, you just have to be in the same continent as the squad you're with.  In just a few hours time you can go from BR1 to BR6.

I've got the Target implant where I can see everyone's health level and it also lets me see deployables from farther out.  As a sniper I think that's an important implant to have since you can see your enemy's health level, you can pick out the ones to kill with one shot.

Title: Planetside - anyone playing?
Post by: Makarov9 on April 30, 2003, 03:54:48 PM
Their are no head shots in PS. They talked about this ad nauseum in the forums. Basically with the amout of people online it would be too hard to track head shots. One sniper hit will bring the target down to 33%. So if you have a full health target it's 2 sniper shots to bring them down.

That's fair enough. I'd like to see some kind of camo-chameleon suit though and the ability to go prone - that would be cool.

I haven't seen many snipers in the game - but that must confirm that we don't need camo suits. ;)

The only ones that sniper can bring down in one shot are the guys in the infiltration suits.  They're a little hard to hit though because they move so damn fast and the way the CoF is set up, it's very hard to track moving targets.

as long as you or someone in your squad is in the base at the beginning of the hack you get exp.  No longer does your squad have to have the "hack".  That lead to rampant TK'ing to get the exp.  Pre Lattice days the game bored me to tears, rarely did i find fights.  Sure we jumped around a lot and racked up hack exp but it was just musical bases.  Now its like crack, big battles and tactics are actually needed.

Too many people spawn and charge the front.  Look what happens to a battle when a squad flanks or comes in from the rear, ends the battle fast.  I have toons on other servers to but citrine is my main.

Been testing a couple months now

yea anyone can be a pilot.  you get multiple certs so you can have several different "occupations" if you want.  Right now every sack of crap out there is flying a reaver, half the time they are firing inviso weapons that make no sound, nothing like taking rounds to turn around and see a reaver 2ft from your head.

There is no real FM, so dont expect anything, flying is tribes was 1000 times harder.

After the latest patch I am crashing a lot, its a nasty memory leak.  Plus I really hate the new spawn timers.

Fileplanet guys - you actually have to start the install by clicking the exe file to get the beta key - are you saying you've done this?

When I did it I simply put my Station username and password into the box that comes up (may have to click 'subscribe' or something). I remember it saying I had to be logged into fileplanet in my browser; after doing that I clicked the neccessary button and the code appeared in my browser. It is emailed to my addy just for backup purposes but the beta key appears in your browser.

Or are you having problems with registering with the Station (Sony's game site)?

Sorry to hear you can't get in - you are missing a treat. :(

It's not exatly crystal the steps you have to follow to get the reg process done. But...I'm all done... almost.

Just the 4 or so hours worth of patches downloading now

I think I just broke my ISP's daily download limits  :D

Its great but the memory leaks play havoc with my HD. Im defragmenting every 2 days if I play 2 or 3 hours a day.

Once they fix that well I think mthey got a winner :)

When I signed up the for the exclusive beta I had to but since my machine didn't meet some of the minimum requirements to be eligible for the exclusive beta, I had to make some 'corrections' to my DXDiag file.   Two weeks later I got in and have been playing since.

Tonight's patch addressed some of the memory leak issues (apparently there's a few) and hopefully Saturday or Sunday's patch will address even more.

Right now the biggest squeak I have about the game is that it doesn't save your config files for any of the settings.

I downloaded, installed, and tried to play wioth my FP name and password - said there was no PS account...

Ok - so it makes be "apply" tro get into beta and I send my DxDiag (only have 256 RAM, not 512 RAM... but its DDR - I doner if that will make a difference...

Anyway - I havent gotten anything else from them... 24 hours now... kinda making me mad.

Any tips?  I would assume they wouldnt even look at the DxDiag for an open beta... and I didnt get anything saying I didnt meet the requirements... but I still cant get in as far as I know.

What annoys me is that the servers are always down in the US off-peak hours during the week - i.e. European prime-time. I'll have to wait until the weekend to play.

The memory leak thing explains alot. I hadn't done a HD defrag for over 12 months and the game get crashing when the action got heavy. So I defragged my HD (which took about 16 hours!!!) and the game hasn't crashed since. I hope I don't have to defrag my HD again - it's a pain in the arse to do.

I don't know what to suggest Saurdaukar. Maybe there is a post on their boards that might help?

BTW - I didn't realise they have an AH-voice type programme in there, integrated in the game. That is so cool!

It's not really all that intergrated into the game.  If you want to use it, someone has to host it and then everyone else is then able to join on the voice server.  Finally got a chance to see it in action early this morning before the servers went down.  The voice quality wasn't as good as AH voice but then that could be because whoever was hosting it might not have had enough resources to properly do so.  The voice program they use is called TeamSound.

Aaah. So it's like how AH utlilized Roger Wilco in the old days. Oh well, hopefully they can develop something like AHVoice.

Ive tried it once, it worked ok.

Its a squad thing. I dont know if they plan to expand it though.

I hope they do.

It's official. I'm pissed off. The game is unplayable as of now. The 10-minutes-then-boot crap is annoying. It's release is scheduled for the 19th of May?!

Maybe its time to send in an : Bug Report?

Ok - played for a little while last night - game crahsed after 15 minutes and I went to bed.

Looks good - controls feel "mushy" and I have no clue what Im doing - tried clicking "instant action" and it said none available.

The sanctuary is odd - cool to buy stuff and everything, but where do I "train?"

Not for me it hasn't.  Every patch they've released so far has made the game run better on my machine and I'm using a machine that is below their minimum requirements.  The only time I had problems running the game was when the the game would crash using the 43.xx Detonator drivers but now that's fixed.

They haven't added the offline training yet but you can go into the VR shooting gallery in your Sanctuary and try out the various weapons and vehicles without any costs.

HOOOOLY crap!   512MB more ram (786 total) really kicks some ass.

Smooth as a baby's bottom now :)

Ditto Oct  :D Got fed up yesterday so went and bought another 512mb today. I really can't believe the difference such a relativily small cost upgrade has made. Glad I did.

No more boot-every-15-minutes for me!

Turns out something was wrong with the Linksys router I have.  I disabled that and hooked the ethernet directly to the motherboard.  While it doesn't actually solve the problem, it works for now.  No boots at all today.

This was discussed in the beta forums at http://planetside.station.sony.com/beta .  Some network engineer went through all the details.  Something to do with Firmware version 1.42  (over my head).   But the good news is..... no boots!
