tanks dont turn like real tanks can in ah
real tanks can reverse one track and move the other forward and turn in place
I suggest this be added.
I would also like to be able to steer the tank from the commanders and gunners position. could this be added by holding down the shift key while moving the joystick? then the common method ww2 tanks used of turning their hull to face the target could be used.
just please do somthing with it.

Errrm you can turn the tank while in the gunner/commander positions, use your pedals. of course that works only while the tank is in motion... and yes, it'd be nice to be able to traverse it.

what your talking about is called pivet steering. a lot AFVs had that, but i think it would be hard to do in the game. to do that you had to be at a stop, no on the fly pivet. the driver used "laterals", two sticks poking out of the floor. if you pushed them both forward you went straight forward pull the right one back, it applied brakes to that sides track and you went right. so to pivet one had to be full up and one full back and step on the gas, it takes alot of rpms to built the torque to switch ends like that. but to my point AFVs of that era had complex driving controls (3 gear shifters and other crap like that) so i dont know how you would do that in the game when most are just using 1 stick to control GVs. but it would be a nice feature.

Real WWII tanks also had manual transmissions where you could just push the clutch in and shift to any gear you wanted.

The problem is in control systems that PCs can accomodate. Typically, a gameport can accomodate 2 joysticks:
Joystick 1
X axis
Y axis
1 button
2 button
Joystick 2
X axis
Y axis
1 button
2 button
Now, for most flight sim joysticks, you'll have a single stick modelled something like this for Aces High:
Joystick1
X axis = pitch
Y axis = yaw
Button 1 = fire primary
Button 2 = fire secondary
Joystick 2
X axis = throttle
Y axis = rudder
Button 1 = fire primary and secondary
Button 2 = view zoom control
Most of the other functions on that joystick will be modelled using combinations of the buttons, like Joystick 1 Button 1 + Joystick 1 Button 2 = look forward/up; Joystick 1 Button 1 + Joystick 2 Button 1 = look right; and so forth.
So for steering a vehicle using independent throttles for the right track and left track, you'd have to figure out which X axis' and Y axis' would do what. Driving a Panzer would become a complicated affair.

you can drive while in gunners positions...use your rudder keys
as for pivot turning it would be a little hard to do it...
-
ok..screw the pivot turning...just make it take less than the width of a WHOLE fediddleing V base to do a 180 in a tracked vehicle---that cost me a tiger last night...feel like im dring a @##@% '59 caddy on a narrow city alley

Map a Key
Add a cockpit light that reads 'Pivot Steering'
Let's see...
In a fully tracked vehicle, add the 'Pivot Steering', or, 'Pivot Mode' light, (Light on, Pivot Steering on, visa versa)
(_) Pivot Steering
Map a key, say.. P key (This is in a tank, WEP need not apply) would activate the Pivot Steering if the tank is stationary, making any Left/Right input turn the tank in that direction without any forward motion. Simply press P again to be back to the usual(Current) method of steering now.
And you have, Pivot Steering/Turning.
An option for dual joystick input would be very nice as well.. :D

Shermans couldn't pivot. They had to be moving in order to turn.

We have shermans? and on mail call he would just hold right lever up and the tank would do 360s thought that was a sherman

I'de fix the GV model first...........it's porked.
-
Get rid of ground vehicles completely.
-
If differential braking were included for GV's as it is for A/C it would more closely simulate the turning capability of GV's.
The drawback would be that if you don't have the gear that gives you the ability of differential braking you'd be SOL.

wtf?! Nooo, bad idea, the GVs are the diversions that make AH the package I'm subscribed to - In other words, Without GVs, I wouldn't pay for the game. :( And, HTC isn't gonna remove something just because a few (A few) people don't like it.
(Fester, not meaning to hijack the thread, it just has to be said)
Now, I'm gonna cut off any "This is Aces HIGH not Aces LOW" or "GVs don't need to be in a FLIGHT SIM" comments because, 'Aces High' is just a name, and they wouldn't have included GVs to begin with, and wouldnt have added more or made plans to do so. This isn't a 'Flight Sim'. It's a 'WW2 Massive Multiplayer Online Game'.
..... I'm done. :D
(BTW) You must be speachless over my brilliant idea. ;)
