I was amazed that you were shocked about this. I thought San Francisco's reputation for this kind of thing was known world wide.
Keep the article "handy". Perhaps others around the world need to know that San Francisco has a "wacky" reputation. The people that participate in such things say they have "mastered" their self consciousness and try to "bait" others into the same way of thinking. I personally think it's a "stroke" of genius as far as publicity goes. It got a "rise" out of you, so the tactic is definitely working. But herein lies the "rub"... This kind of thing has been going on there for quite some time, and as far as Americans go, it only comes as a shock to people who live in the bible belt states such as "KY" (that's Kentucky). San Francisco will always "head" in a different direction than mainstream America. They just "beat" to a different drum there.

Naah, not really shocked. Well, maybe a little. I used to live/work in San Francisco Bay Area, so I know all about what goes on. Spent a couple of months at a residence club at Van Ness & Sacramento - very close to Polk St. I have no problem with guys who "play for the other side", as long as they don't try to recruit me.
Hehe, wonder if GTOra2 attended the event. ;):D

I wouldn't generalize "Californians" as being odd. Most areas are pretty normal. It's mainly the Bay area that seems to have propagated the strangeness. Sort of like Key West here in Florida...
I have an aunt and uncle who live in Sonoma County outside of San Francisco... They live in some kind of hippie community and have refused to let go of the 70's era. They both have obtained prescriptions to smoke marijuana from some hippie doctor, and I'm fairly convinced my uncle grows the stuff (strictly for medicinal purposes of course)... Although I don't smoke the stuff myself, and I disagree with their tree hugger mentality, I love them both dearly. I'm glad they found a place to live where their viewpoints are accepted by others. However, I think even they would have a problem with this wackathon... LOL

Just going on my own impressions of visiting LA, San Clemente, San Diego as opposed to my visit to San Francisco... I sensed an immediate difference there in the general attitude of the populace... They're wacked!
