What is Vichy French, and how is that different from regular French?

vichy is served with a Bernaisse Sauce, while regular is lightly breaded, and served with roasted duck.

Yeah, serious question.  I was reading a little about madagascar, and it said the british were fighting the vichy french.  I didn't know if that meant Madagascar natives that were under french rule, or French nationals that colonized it.  I was also unsure if vichy was a term particular to madagascar, or if there were vichy French in France, too.

at the point when france surrendered, germany ocupied about half of france and had influence over the rest , the french capitol was moved to the city of Vichy and the new french govt (vichy) was now a ally of germany along with the french colonies.

This link has a little info about the U.S.S. Massachusetts' engagement against the vichy french navy.

It was not an elected governement and not all colonies were with Vichy in fact almost all colonies were on the resistance side.

The leader of Vichy France (Petain) is considered a traitor by most French I think.

Straffo can probably tell you more about this evil Frenchman :D

Depend of the context Imp.

Just after French defeat in 40 (*) almost all the population was backing Pétain ... after some year when it appeared that Pétain's governement was just Hitler's puppet the popular support started to disappear to being hated by the whole population since the "épuration" at the end of the war.

When France realized that they were toast, they signed a pact with the devil. General Petain became the new French leader and moved the "gvt" to Vichy (a nice place in France where you can enjoy water springs and warm water springs).

Vichy was a government of collaboration separating the French in two. The ones who thought it was a great way to save his bacon, and the ones who thought that Vichy's partisans were traitors.

In villages, collaborators were denonciating resistans or non-vichy supporters to the SS ... thus some genocides and others tortures and shooting range on blindfolded target dumies. Do not forget the SS favorite: The flame thrower that some of my familly members had the chance to experience.
Coming as a perk from Vichy were a free train ticket to go working for German farmers and factories, or being designated volonteer to go fight against the allies. The D520s with the nice camo with the nose/tail yellow/red is one of them.

Off course, when France was liberated, even several years later, you could witness some really weird accidents happening to the collaborators. I know in the 3000 saoul village of my grand father, things got crazy after years of hate neighbor to neighbor.

That's why I've given some context information.
